If you want to beat the casino, the first thing you need to understand is the concept of EV (or Expected Value). In this video, Colin explains how casinos use an understanding of EV to make money off of gamblers, and how card counters use EV to beat blackjack.

1:27 If you flip a coin, the EV (Expected Value) of a coin flip is if we bet $1: Win $1 (.5 probability) + Lose $1 (.5 probability) So 1(.5)+-1(.5) = $0.00 EV with 100% Risk of Ruin regardless of your bankroll size. I ran a computer simulation where I had a variable that controls how likely I am to win any given round. (Out of 100 rounds) If I set this variable between 1-49 after thousands of spins, I lost my money to the house edge. If I set the odds to 50%, it should be a breakeven game but because my Risk of Ruin is 100%, I end up losing my bankroll once again. But if I set the odds to 51 or higher, I come out ahead with big winnings because the math DOES work out long-term with a proper brain and bankroll.

@ComFurt

I know this is a 3 year old comment so you probably don't need this advice anymore, but just for anyone else reading: No. At least not while you're learning. Because counting cards has such a small edge, any team will test you to ensure your play is 100% perfect before they let you play with their money. However, you *can* find a card counter you highly trust and allow them to use your money as bankroll, then split the profits. Since higher bankrolls lead to higher EV, even established card counters would be interested in this if you have enough $ to provide.

Hi Colin... my EV is over $40 an hour, have been backed off over 20 times and have made over 10k a year after all expenses for the past 6 years... well until COVID. Only up 4k for this year and no trips to Vegas yet. You may want to mention match plays, free bets and external comps as additional lift on EV. I am not playing to go professional so several short series has benefited my EV. For example if I get a $75 paper a day and I play for 1 hour and wait for a better than casino odds that paper has about $36 EV for me. I play for fun but play optimal games, know basic, and about a 8 indexes of the Illustrious 18 and Fab 4.... but maintain fairly modest 12 unit spreads. I like my job and Blackjack is just a game for me... but I like to beat the house. I just thought the non-card EV value is worth mentioning.

Others around my family considered this person to have the proverbial “horseshoe up his backside”. I got looks like I was crazy when I suggested perhaps we were only hearing about the wins, not EVERY trip they made. Lo and behold, that’s exactly what happened and the short-term horrific -EV of slots caught up with them and they got into bad debt. Math doesn’t lie.

As long as you have the edge you are generating Expected Value. This could mean playing at anywhere from a 50.5% to 51, 52, 53% likelihood of winning a given hand. When you lose this is called negative variance. As long as we keep playing with an edge and playing correctly, we will win in the long run. To summarize, luck has nothing to do with it.

If you tap out your session bank (which is unlikely if your ROR is dialed in), you get tired or find that you're mentally distracted, or the losses are starting to put you on tilt, then yea I would leave. I personally leave if I hit a certain amount of money during a session that I think is reasonably discreet. This is only so I don't overstay my welcome. another way I have to think about it is losing 1 time ? (in a row, in a 50/50 event) possible and realistic. losing 3 times? possible, yet kind of unluckky losing 10 times? possible, yet it's a big curse right there losing 100 times? possible, yet basically impossible in practice, never happening we separate from the 100/0% winrate and get closer and closer to the average luck, the bigger the sample grows this is so simple to understand, but IMO random is such a concept that humans become crazy about (especially when real money is at stake) they can't think rationnally about it

Yeah, you lose more HANDS as a card counter, but you win 55% of your sessions. That's because of double downs and blackjacks paying 3:2. I can elaborate if you want, but you're correct that a card counter loses more hands than he wins, but not all hands are equal EV. =)

I would put a session as about a 100 hands. In this example a blackjack counts as 1.5 win a double down counts as 2 wins or 2 loses. The 55% is coming out ahead after the session not on a given hand. The important thing in blackjack is not how many hands you win or lose in a session whats important is how much money you win or lose. If you lose 60 bets and win 40 in a session you can come out ahead money wise if you had a higher average bet on wins then on losses.
@edwardwcassidy4396
@edwardwcassidy4396 5 жыл бұрын
Chris, thank you for your reply. I believe your not correct. Your cannot win money with a 4 out of 10 win rate. As I stated to Colin, at all TC you must win 43.5% to make money. Less then TC=3 you will lose more money, but the % of win rate over TC>=3 only increases appx 1.8%. Doug Grant in 1980's built BJ teams, he said their are no beginnings or endings to a BJ session. If your can find his material, worth reading. Again I stand corrected.

When I win big I like to shrink my win to the pit by pocketing chips the chips I pocket I dont color up at the end not cashing all my chips at once if I know the cash out requires a pit call. Where I live I can use my chips to buy in at other neighboring casinos so I do that to. The goal is to really win money but have a losing record on the books with the pit this minimizes heat.

Honestly I dont know what my overall ev is I don't play a 100% perfect I think I make a playing mistake 1 out of 300 hands. Also I vary of the top of the deck a lot especially if the casino has good rules. The second hand is usually adjusted pretty well and I play 1 or 2 decks with a 3/2 payout and double first two cards. I think I get a lot of expected ev from promotional offers from casinos when they send me promotional chips, concerts, match plays, dining credits, all stuff I use. I play most hands between $10-$30 if the casino likes big action I can start with a $50 bet to earn better comps. My win loss record according to the casino is in the negative but I colored up for less intentionally to throw off the numbers to the pit and play at tables with other players to make harder to figure out my actual wins or loses.

I thought card counters were a type of gambler, a much smarter and more analytic gambler, but a gambler nonetheless. You dont know for sure how the cards are gonna turn up, and you dont know for sure when your winning streaks or losing streaks are gonna happen, nor do you know exactly how much you'll make or lose on those streaks. You're still putting your money down on the unknown, so that's still a gambler.

The concept of EV is overblown IMO. Sure, EV is incredibly important but it's worth nothing if you can't play with a reasonable RoR, and you may never even realize your EV if the N0 of the game you're playing is through the roof. I can think of one game in particular (not mentioning names) where the edge is about 2 or 3 %, better than BJ but the N0 is so high most people stay away from the game entirely and would rather play BJ despite the EV being lower because they're more likely to realize their equity.

@@6B26asyGKDo @Blackjack Apprenticeship absolutely gives realistic expectations. Don't come and watch 1 video and pretend you know what's going on here. Yes they are trying to make money, and they have earned the right to do so. But don't think that after watching a couple videos that there is any type of falseness here. They lay out the reality of what will really happen to you and they repeat over and over this isn't a get rich quick scheme. This is a long haul, that you need to commit to to see any benefit. As they explain over and over, you need perfect skills with perfect betting deviations to even have a chance at winning 55% of the time. If you are really skeptical, get yourself 6 decks, a bunch of poker chips and play every shoe exactly how they say. After getting through 50 shoes, see if you are up for down. This is exactly what I did. I sat down with a 6 decks, $1000 in chips and a 1-8 bet spread betting at $10 TC=4. I did not play through running counts that were TC-2 or lower. After the first shoe i was down 10 dollars. After the second shoe I was at 1280, after the 3rd shoe i was at 1300. Also if your local casinos don't have favourable rules that sucks for you but here the local casino has 8 decks, DAS, H17, and no surrender. I played by those exact rules and was able to win that $300 at home in 3 shoes.
@6B26asyGKDo
@6B26asyGKDo 5 жыл бұрын
@@greg4953 I'm not saying the math is wrong dude, the second you start rasing and rasing your bets at the end of a shoe when you weren't at the start, they will literally just kick you out. I wish you the best of luck, I honestly hope it lasts for you, however I'd bet money you'd never get through any significant amount of shoes while counting cards perfecting without getting thrown out.

He said 4 million "profit". The word "profit" is defined as: a financial gain, especially the difference between the amount earned and the amount spent in buying, operating, or producing something. Meaning they ended with 4 million more than they started with. Granted, that would be split between a group of people, but still. Also, how is playing a card game using statistics a cult? Sure, one of the groups were members of a church, but I don't see how that relates to playing a card game.
