Great video. Can you go into a little more detail about your audio syncing? If I run mics into two cameras, could I expect echoing/syncing issues?
@zephanmoses3 жыл бұрын
Good questions. If I have more microphones than inputs on one camera (usually 2 XLR inputs on my C70) then I will resort to bringing a sound mixer so I can have a sound person control the levels and turn mics off when they're not in use. This will help to avoid echo or feedback. As for syncing, some people complain of audio going out of sync when they either A) use OBS to stream on an underpowered computer or B) use the ATEM's 3.5mm microphone inputs (this is why Blackmagic updated it to add in delay features). This is the nature of light hitting the camera sensor, going over the HDMI signal, into the ATEM Mini and ultimately out to the final destination occurring at a different speed than sound. To avoid that, I send one sound feed into a camera so the sound and image hit the ATEM at the same time. This has always given me a great result with little to no noticeable delay on audio. For audio mixers I use the Zoom Livetrak L8.
@reginaldbanks9952 жыл бұрын
Love the video. It was very informative. I have a question. If you route the audio into the main camera to mitigate sync issues, when you switch to, say, camera 2 do you still hear the audio that is going into camera 1 or is the audio gone?

Depends if you use the audio on button or the AFV (audio follows video) button on the atem.

Your tutorial stopped being just about how to use the ATEM Mini Pro when you connected to the Feelworld monitor. I was hoping to see how to use a standard monitor with program out and still record with the USB port to an SSD. AFAIK being a new user of the Mini Pro, that's the standard setup for this device that doesn't require additional hardware. Other than that, I enjoyed your simple breakdown of how it all works. Do I need a 'special' monitor to connect to *ATEM Mini Pro* for multi view or may I use *any monitor* to connect the HDMI output to view the multi view screen?
@zephanmoses3 жыл бұрын
You don't need a special monitor so long as the one you are using is compatible with the resolutions and framerates that the mini pro outputs. So essentially the monitor must be able to take 1080p signals at a range of framerates from 24-60p.

Can you make a video on how to stream through the Atem Mini Pro’s Ethernet port? How to setup the connection to the internet while still controlling the Atem Mini Pro through the same internet port so that you can record the USB out to an SDD
@zephanmoses3 жыл бұрын
I'll take note of that! It's pretty easy. The big ingredient most people are missing is making sure you have an ethernet switch. The switch plugs into your router and acts as a splitter. Once the atem mini and your laptop are plugged into the switch they can easily find each other and you'll be able to control the atem as well as stream over ethernet. We're actually in the process of producing a course that will cover all of these things. Feel free to contact me directly if. you're interested!

Hey Zephan thanks for the great video. So does that mean since the Atem is conncected to the computer via USB-C you cannot record program at the same time?
@zephanmoses3 жыл бұрын
Great question. There’s a couple things you can do. If the atem is using the multiview monitor from Seetec by looping the hdmi feeds into the atem, you have a few options. You can 1) stream via USB-C 2) stream via Ethernet/encoder or 3) stream via hdmi output into a capture device like an Elgato camlink. The way I set it up is I usually record my program output in my Atomos shogun 7 and use the hdmi output for the program feed. You could potentially take the usb-c signal and record in QuickTime if you’re on a Mac (or OBS on Mac/Pc). There’s a lot of ways to do it. You just wouldn’t record directly to a hard drive using the USB-C port if you are using that port to send a video feed out.

Zephan, great video thank you! I have an atem mini pro and I need to send a live stream to the in-house jumbotrons and Vimeo. The stream is directly from the mini pro. Will the decimator allow me to use the output from the USB c converted to HDMI from the atem to feed into the decimator allowing me to provide SDI to the house for playback on the jumbotron screens? If not, do you have any suggestions since the HDMI from the atem will be used for multiview? Thank you in advance!
@zephanmoses2 жыл бұрын
Hey Jim, thanks for the question. Your USB-C output on the atem is ONLY for a webcam feed into the computer or as a data stream to a solid state drive for external recording. This USB-C feed cannot (I repeat for everyone in the back!) cannot be "converted" into any other type of signal. A Decimator would allow you to take either a HDMI or SDI output and convert it/scale it and output it as HDMI or additional SDI outputs. It's a scaler/convertor and in some uses can act as a splitter. Since your HDMI is being used for multiview, I would suggest getting yourself a Streaming Bridge. You'd use the ethernet port to "stream" to the streaming bridge which will give you additional HDMI and SDI outputs of your livestream feed to send SDI to the jumbotron screens and the HDMI feed you could then send into a capture device like another atem mini or an Elgato Camlink to send your stream out on your platform of choice. Unfortunately with the mini pro you only have one output whereas if you had an extreme model, you'd gain an additional HDMI output (one for multiview and one for the program/live feed).

Hi Zephan, Great video. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I have an ATEM Mini Extreme, just moved up from the Mini Pro for the added features. I use it to teach classes through Zoom. I have 3 PTZ cameras and a second computer connected via HDMI inputs to display various graphics programs for my students. Like you, I’m running my ATEM and Zoom through a separate computer, both which are Macs. My issue is that when I run the computer through the Mini, the image is not as crisp as when I share my screen through Zoom. The computer currently plugged into input #4. This makes my workflow far clunkier. Would moving it to input #1 solve that problem? Or if that doesn’t resolve the issue, would running it through the Decimator MD-HX work? Any and all suggestions would be much appreciated.
@zephanmoses3 жыл бұрын
Hey Marvin, at the end of the day, Zoom is only streaming in standard definition any time there are more than 2 people on a meeting call. They have an HD feature you can enable in the settings but Zoom states on their support site that they are throttling even paid users. It’s important to know that what you see in Zoom on your end will always look better than what your audience sees unless you have an enterprise or business account with 1080p streaming enabled. It’s always a good plan to plug a computer into input 1 but that’s not going to make the image “sharper” per se. Thats just leveraging the YUV color space over the RGB color space of inputs 2-4 on the mini pro. On the extreme I believe inputs 1+2 are both YUV. Getting a Decimator is always nice to have but it’s not going to change how sharp your image is. I would check your display settings on the computer because you’ll want the computer to be outputting something like 1920x1080. Some smaller or underpowered laptops might output a weird resolutions like 1024x856 or something like that. That would obviously show up blurry if the atem had to scale that up to fit 1920 and very well could be what is happening. Check your display output settings first on the laptop then keep in mind the quality you see on your zoom streaming computer is always better than what the audience sees.

Hey Zephan! Awesome! 1) Why don't you use the ATEM's encoder and connect ATEM directly to Ethernet? That seems like a way to offload processing load and is simpler. 2)Do you think the ATEM mini Extreme's second HDMI out is now a better way of getting multi view since it eliminates 4 HDMI cords?
@zephanmoses3 жыл бұрын
Good questions! Since this video I’ve actually sold all mini pros and traded up for extreme ISOs. I originally liked offloading the encoding to OBS because I didn’t want to overload the mini pro. Many times on site we actually offload the work to a Teradek encoder or a bonding encoder because of internet issues. Regardless there’s no real reason to not use the built in encoder other than dealing with the pain of editing the xml file if you are streaming to a custom rtmp location that isn’t a default in the atem software.

I followed all the instructions to set up the stream (Facebook and KZfaq) and when I start streaming on the switcher, the sign ON AIR is turned on but on timecode, there is nothing happening and I don't get any video source on Facebook or KZfaq. I tried on both platforms (FB, YT) and on MAC and PC software.
@zephanmoses3 жыл бұрын
Hey Gerven, there's a lot of things that could be at play here. For starters, you can only stream to one destination at a time. You cannot stream to both Facebook AND KZfaq from an ATEM. It only has one encoder built in so you have to pick one or the other. Alternatively you can use a service like Restream.io for streaming to multiple platforms at once. If your timecode isn't moving, can you tell if your cache is filling up? If the cache is starting to fill it means that your internet connection is either too weak to stream or it's non-existent and the way you connected your ATEM to the internet was done improperly. Make sure you have an ethernet cable directly from the ATEM to a solid internet connection with a good upload speed. You can use speedtest.net to test your upload speed. If you're using an internet switch, the ethernet cable must be run from the ATEM to the switch and the switch must be plugged into your internet router.

Does using software like obs or wirecast affect the overall picture quality?
@zephanmoses2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question! The software itself doesn't necessarily affect picture quality but it is important to remember that if you're sending the signal over the USB-C output of the atem and into a program like OBS, you're already taking a compressed webcam feed which will probably not look as good pixel for pixel as the HDMI output will. On top of that, you're going to be compressing the video signal further by encoding it to send it out to your final destination platform. So your bitrate settings will dictate the quality of the image on the final platform. It's a combination of your bitrate of the encoder you choose and your internet connection that will determine final image quality.
@warrenmanos1365 Жыл бұрын
I question why do you loop through each camera through a 4 input monitor when you can just use multiview out of the switcher?
@zephanmoses Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question, it's because the ATEM Mini Pro only has 1 HDMI output. If you want to use the HDMI output for something other than multiview like a program or recording output, you can't due to this limitation. This video was created before the creation of the ATEM Mini Extreme models which have multiple outputs. So at the time there was no solution to be able to output both multiview and a program output from the ATEM Mini Pro. So in this case, I was using the HDMI output so that I could record a program video feed to my Atomos Ninja recorder and then I could still leverage the USB output from the ATEM for webcam input to a laptop rather than recording to a solid state drive. This means that I could still stream into platforms like Zoom using the USB. So if I was using the HDMI output for multiview, I would be forced to record my program feed by plugging in a SSD to the USB-C output. If I do that, then I can't use the ATEM as a USB capture device because the USB port is used. This was the best work around at the time. Now of course the best work around is just to pay a little more money for the extreme model so you can have one hdmi output for multiview and one hdmi output for anything else plus two USB outputs, one for SSD recording and one for webcam streaming.

Maybe I missed it, how is the Atem having internet. Is it through the USB C to the laptop or Ethernet port. I did not see that
@zephanmoses3 жыл бұрын
In this setup the atem does not connect to the internet. The video signal goes over the USB-C cable and then you go live from the MacBook Pro. You could just go live on Facebook or you could use OBS. It really depends on your final destination. You can still plug the atem into the Ethernet cable and into the internet switch that you see me hook up in the video. Then you could use the built in Encoder. I’ve used both the built in encoder and the usb-c output to go live. They pretty much work the same so long as you’re willing to rely on something like OBS to do the encoding. I found that when I use OBS it used less than 10% of my CPU so it really uses very low resources on the computer.
@michelomulambo61693 жыл бұрын
Zephan Moses cool, sounds good. Meaning you will have your MacBook connected via Ethernet too for better streaming correct ?
@zephanmoses3 жыл бұрын
@@michelomulambo6169 yes! I always make sure that I’m live streaming on a wired Ethernet connection. Typically I will run a wired Cat6 cable from the router or Ethernet port on location to my 5 port gigabit switch. This basically gives me 5 ports to use so if I have additional computers or devices I can connect them too. Think of it like a splitter. I don’t ever livestream on WiFi because I can’t guarantee that the connection will stay live during longer events and I have no idea how many other devices are connected to the networks. We have used hotspots and cellular bonding routers in the past when we didn’t have a reliable connection but as a professional service I don’t feel comfortable charging someone money to stream over WiFi or an unreliable connection. We have a clause in our contract that makes it clear we aren’t reliable for a livestream failure. We also try to bring as many backups as possible.

Why would you use the second laptop for streaming when there’s a direct streaming output on the mini pro?
@zephanmoses Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your question, there's two computers involved here because one computer is being used for video playback and the other computer is being used to access the ATEM software control in order to set up stream settings in the ATEM such as your streaming key. The ATEM Software Control also allows for you to adjust more settings that cannot be set within the ATEM itself such as a streaming framerate, making adjustments to the audio inputs, adding audio delay, etc. In later ATEM models the software control allows you to adjust things like the SuperSource. While you could in theory use the same computer to manage the ATEM software control and play back videos, it's not ideal. What if you need to be able to access the software control while a video is playing back? Then you'd wind up in needing a second monitor output so you could keep the software control open on one monitor and the video playback on the second monitor output going into the ATEM. If you accidentally swipe the wrong way, press a keyboard shortcut or a hotkey, the video is going to disappear therefore displaying the error into your livestream. With that said you can stream from the ATEM's built in encoder but you still need to set it up in the software control. It's also worth mentioning that for events that have more than 20 images, you'll need a bigger media pool than the one that the ATEM supplies in which case you might want to use the USB output of the atem into a streaming computer that uses OBS to manage the encoding as well as insert graphics since there is no limitation on the amount of graphics you can insert in OBS. There's a lot of reasons why you would want to use two computers and in our setups we aim to create the most reliable experience that is error free for our clients.

What type of camera are you using? How is it connected to the atem? What type of cable and what length? Usually I add 3-4 frames of delay on my audio input on mic 1 to get things lining up. @@zephanmoses Thanks for the reply. Actually the audio is not the issue as all I need the ATEM for is video for the venue. The issue is the video delay from what is happening live. Like he hits a note, and the video shows his hand hit the note immediately after it actually happens. If you are using OBS as an encoder I do not recommend using a laptop that is underpowered. You may see issues with your livestream. The Decimator isn't exactly necessary but we find it useful in many cases where we might have to split out PowerPoint slides to other screens. It's also been a great troubleshooting tool. One thing that we like to do is offload easy tasks like scaling from the ATEM when possible so it's not doing EVERYTHING at one time. @zephanmoses3 жыл бұрын
The MacBook Pro that had the KZfaq video on it was set up so that the displays are extended, not mirrored. This is great if you’re plugging in a second screen and using two screens on a computer. In this setup the extended or second display is the hdmi feed going out of the Mac and into the ATEM. That’s all. Nothing crazy. It’s just not setup as a mirrored display.

Is there a setting I'm missing to get rid of what's on my Sony's LCD screen in the ATEM? I try to do it on my Sony Camera but I can't get rid of everything STB will always remain or battery. Now a capture card works to completely get rid of everything but I was hoping not to have get 3 or 4 capture cards to work the Atem. Is there a setting I'm missing on the Atem that will fix this? Anybody? Thanks in Advance!
@zephanmoses2 жыл бұрын
This is called "clean HDMI". Not all cameras have a clean HDMI output meaning you will see the menus and settings overlayed over top of the camera feed when using the HDMI port just like how you would see those settings on the camera screen. It's crucial to double check that your camera actually has the ability to output clean HDMI before using it with the ATEM. The easiest way is to google the camera make and model with the words "clean hdmi" and you'll find your answer pretty quickly. For cameras that do offer clean HDMI output, there will most likely be a setting to disable these settings from showing up. It might be called "OSD" or "On Screen Display" on some camera models. It has nothing to do with the ATEM and 100% everything to do with your camera.

how to use phone camera to set up with atem mini pro
@zephanmoses11 ай бұрын
It depends on the phone that you have because you will need HDMI output from the phone. Most phones won't do this without converters/adapters which introduce lag. With the iPhone you can get a lightning to HDMI adapter like this: amzn.to/3Ew3gwZ and then you will need a camera application that will output a "clean" signal meaning it doesn't output any of the settings or other displays on screen. Apps like FilmicPro can do this: www.filmicpro.com/

Thanks for your comment. Livestreaming (and video in general) is not a cheap hobby. That's why I've made a career out of it and use around $100,000 worth of equipment on a daily basis and earn multiple times that per year. A $400 switcher only goes so far. To really put it to good use in the real world you need cameras, cabling, adapters, converters and a lot more. This video was intended to show the way that I along with many other professionals are using it.

Is it me or is the engineering of this thing stupid? With regard to the ability to record the clean program HDMI at the expense of having a multi view seems to be a fatal flaw in the design. Every TV studio I've ever worked in had both the ability to record a clean program feed, AND preview not only the inputs, but the preview and program feeds. Would it have killed BMD to throw in another output?
@zephanmoses3 жыл бұрын
I agree and that’s why they made the atem mini extreme which fixes most issues. You have two hdmi outputs so one can be program and one can be multiview. They also released the streaming bridge which gives you SDI and hdmi program output so you can reserve the single hdmi output on an atem mini pro for multiview.
