You know we have never taken 4K into this switcher, firstly there can be issues with cable lengths but mainly for IMAG screens, streaming and many all day/multi-day events just don’t warrant 4K for us. The only 4K stream I have done was directly out of the KZfaq Space studio in London. The switcher is good but for the price it tends to be frustrating that it doesn’t do many of the features, like scaling, done by the £300 ATEM Mini. I guess it really depends on the type of work you do and frequency of use. Most of the kit I have is used, I am not sure I could justify the new price but we do tend to use all 10 inputs for some jobs.

I can’t say they run cool but I haven’t had any overheating issues with this setup. The air gap and fans certainly helps a lot.

Well, I haven’t used it in anger but I used a series of low cost converters to go between AES to line level and back, making a cable to inject and extract that into the intercom. It did work but perhaps not at a level I would wish to use out on a job. I have subsequently bought a very neat gadget from AVLifesavers that allows you to insert and extract line level from the intercom ring and that has proven to be very useful. Right now I am still using an XLR chain out to all our cameras rather than trying to integrate the fiber system as it is pretty bullet proof plus I’d have to buy a load of new headsets. I see there are other converters on the market now allowing for integration of intercom and Hollyland wireless comms for example. I think it is easy to end up spending a lot of money though trying to integrate a number of different systems if you are not careful.

Hi, yes the Talkback converter should work fine with the Mini Fiber converters. I have a mini Fiber converter and can use it with the Studio converter ok. If you don’t need talkback it is fine, you can even use the Mini Fiber converter to Mini Fiber converter if you don’t want the multiple inputs on the bigger unit. Hope that helps.

@@apntv Thanks for the quick answer :-) If I use the route from the Kaerma with the Mini Converter to the ATEM Studio Converter, will I also have both SDI out on the ATEM Studio Converter?

@@RMFFILM think of the dual Fiber as 2 separate cables, which they are. You send SDI from the camera to the studio converter and the program out on the camera converter is sent back on the other Fiber to the camera, even you you are not using it. If you separate the LC plug into the two fibers you could sent anything else along that Fiber, in either direction if you wished. It is just like having 2 SDI cables. Typically the studio converter sends back the PGM feed from your switcher although you could send any other output back instead. I hope that makes sense.

I haven’t specifically used that model but I do know of it. It is good in that. It has a built-in switching panel although I find there are way too many buttons for wipes and effects that most people would never use. I believe BlackMagic is due to refresh their limited 4K range fairly soon, but no sign of it yet, I’m sure we will see 4K versions of the rackmounted switches in the not too distant future and probably some 4K minis, so it could be worth waiting or buying used for now. As always finding the right device for your needs really comes down to what you expect to do with it now, and in the future, in some cases, the mini range is perfect for some users where others are better off with the rackmount equipment depending on the nature of work they do.

Just to add to that, since making the video above, I have also added a blackmagic constellation, HD switcher into my second rack. That is a very powerful switcher at a good price and although some 4K work is coming to me, I have generally not ever come across 4K Streaming jobs, so the HD switcher fits very well into my current workflows. The 4K streaming I did do was actually directly at KZfaq and there is a video for that in my tech playlist if you’re interested.

I ordered these through a colleague, who I have done wiring jobs for me before wiring complete studios and who gave me a good price for 50 cables. If you can find a similar company local to you, you can probably get a good deal on multiple cables. They were around half the price or less of buying similar individual cables online, so worth searching out. Where are you based?

Do you mean the panel? It is called Mix-It. You should find some info by searching that, it is a nice little panel.

The vision mixer panel is made by Mix-It if you google that.

@@tobiskmusic ah, OK. It works well but since the release of hardware like the Streamdecks, I guess there are plenty of cheaper options.

A streamdeck is too low level for me, infuse it for automating macros, but for cutting and dissolving, I prefer a real panel. However as most of it could be done by an arduino and some buttons I think about building my own or extending an old video control panel

The panel? It’s called Mix-It.

This system is based around an ATEM 1M/E Production Studio 4K, a 20*20 Smarthub for routing, Hyperdeck Studio Pro SSD recorder and Fiber uses the Studio Converter which has 4 LC Fiber inputs and a mixture of Camera Converters and Fiber Converters at the camera end. I use a Canford TecPro system for talkback.

It's amazing what you can do with a bunch of little cables on those long winter nights at home :-)
