In this video I do a long term 3 month review on the Apple co designed blackmagic eGPU external graphics unit for video editing. I tested a variety of laptops including a 13" macbook pro and two 15" Macbook Pro's with FCX Final cut pro X, Devinci Resolve 15, and adobe resolve 2018. The codecs that were used were ProRes RAW, 4K h.264 and 4K H.265 HEVC, RED R3D RAW, and Canon Cinema Raw Lite from the C200. Overall I wasn't happy with the results for anyone with a 15.4" Macbook pro.
If you have a new 13.3" mid 2018 Mabook pro with the quad core processor this blackmagic egpu is a good fit especially if you want to connect to a thunderbolt 3 display like the LG ultrafine 5K monitor. The eGPU is very quit but large and with a non upgradable graphics card which is a major downside. For most I would suggest getting a seperate extenal enclosure like the Sonnet and then pair it with a vega 64 if you can afford it.

Max Yuryev if you go to sonnets page for the eGPU and read the 550 description at the very bottom, it says Vega 64 is not supported. Also, apple pairs the 650 with the Vega 64 in their Sept 24 eGPU info page. www.sonnettech.com/product/egfx-breakaway-box.html

@@andyraps Thanks for the reply ? The important thing is that it is something related to the egpus and that the system is stable during use. I read about possible problems with kernel panic caused by T2 but obviously not all of them are affected by these problems.

My first time commenting! I have a maxed out work computer (2017 MacBook Pro 15") , the LG Ultrafine 5K and this eGPU. So far I've been happy with it. I keep certain peripherals plugged into the USB outputs like my microphone/speakers, iphone charger, monitor, external HD, etc. So it creates an elegant solution for plugging in and going quickly with one Thunderbolt 3 cable. I have found great performance boost in Resolve and also decent in FCP X (if I turn off the high quality settings and keep it at performance mode). Odd, however, is the fact that this eGPU crashes safari when watching videos so I'm forced to use chrome (which is not so bad) but I would have expected apple software to work better with this as its "apple certified." I suspect Mac couldn't put a faster GPU in the enclosure at risk of making folks not want to buy a iMac Pro. I don't use Premiere or After Effects much...but when I do, I don't see really any performance improvement as there is no CUDA. Thanks for your review!

Can you tell me if you run into video playback issues? Maybe this has to do with your timeline lag in FCPX... Issues especially arise with 4k60 video playback in Mac OS via eGPU and 4k monitor hooked to the egpu. I have tested an RX580 Aorus box (ti83 chipset) and Akitio Node Pro with Vega 56 (ti83 chipset) with 2018 13" i7 Macbook Pro with fresh 10.14.1 install. Performance in applications is awesome, quite incredible what is doable in FCPX and Premiere on a laptop but when it comes time to play back 4k60p content, the system chokes. While 4k60p content is playing, the eGPU utilization shows at 100% in activity monitor and the whole OS slows down. This can be an h264 250Mbps or h265 50Mbps video file in quicktime or VLC or just 4k60 content from youtube in chrome. I then booted up to Windows 10 and proved that it is not bottlenecking. When bootcamed to windows 10 with the same setup, the system plays 4k60 video content beautifully, doesn't slow down, no frame drops and the eGPU shows it topping at 50-65% utilization depending on which browser and program used for playback. I have attempted to contact apple about this, no response yet.

Hi guys. Using this egpu, do you think there would be any noticeable video editing gains on the MBP 13 (10th-gen) 2020? I'm not a pro user, but I still really like the quietness and form factor of this, and the idea of using it as a docking/monitor solution. I shoot with a Panny GH5, and a graphics boost when colour grading would be a bonus.

Hi Max This is Max too! I just want to clarify are you saying any Egpu solution for the 15 inch MacBook Pro’s are not really worth it?? Or just the BMD version? @Gizmopunk1
@Gizmopunk1 5 жыл бұрын
Manny Vids so I’ve watched a ton of these videos and it looks like it comes down to personal preference. If you don’t want to fiddle with a bunch of compatibility preferences and you have beefed up your Mac Mini and Blackmagic eGPU will totally work. On the other hand if you really like having control over how you throttle your own workflow based on the various performance settings of your render software, PC processing speed, eGPU processing etc... then you may want to find a specific graphics card an enclosure because it will allow you more control to customize your workflow. It’s also looking about $400 cheaper. To me time is money and I know the Blackmagic eGPU will be more plug-n-play. I realize I’ll be sacrificing $400 and most of my ability to customize my rendering / exporting workflow but if I’m producing content I’m making money. I make no money when I’m geeking out about precise benchmarks. Luckily while things are rendering I just use that time to call up new clients ;)

It seems that this EGPU only benefits users with a 13" MBP using the LG 5K ultrafine, but guess what, I have a 13" 2018 MBP and the LG 5L ultrafine. I love my MBP 13 and the Ultrafine 5k but some windows resize real slow and transitions can be choppy on the 5k display compared to a 1440p monitor. Does this EGPU take over graphics acceleration for everything on the external monitor, even desktop drawing, or is it just used in select apps like final cut for its rendering? If I can get a smoother desktop experience, like the iMac, with the portability of the 13" then that is perfect for my job as a web coder.

For editing 4K video and higher on a Macbook Pro using proxies (natch), is 16GB sufficient if all you're doing is grading in Resolve with light effects and titling? I'm looking to put together a Macbook Pro for that purpose that performs well without breaking the bank.

Max Hi, great video. I use the gigabyte gaming box rx580 which i got for $450. Paired with a mbp 13 2015 it improves the performance substantially. You should check it out. Actually you should have suggested as an alternative to the $700 BM egpu. My guess is that apple is changing how final cut is rendering by using the internal gpu as well as the cpu in order to disadvantage solutions like this for older or weaker mbp's. That way we will be forced to upgrade to a stronger laptop or the iMac instead of using an egpu. If it was not for AR where extra graphic performance is required especially for developers apple would never have allowed egpu's to work natively

max for editing 4k footage on the go. what macbook pro do you recommend best bang for buck? being 13 or 15"?
@MaksimYuryev
@MaksimYuryev 5 жыл бұрын
I really like the 13", but if your using Resolve or Premiere, or if you are using FCX and using luts, color correction, and heavier effects/animations then a 15" is your best bet. If your on a budget and trying to keep the cost down I would suggest this one: bhpho.to/2yezCcW Its currenlty only $150 more than a quad core 13" but with twice the ram and the fastest dedicated GPU and a CPU that is fast too. If you have more cash to spare go with a 2018 6 core: bhpho.to/2AGCRhK and if you have even more definitely get the Base 2.2ghz CPU, 560x and 32GB RAM with however much SSD you need or can afford: bhpho.to/2A5fONb

Hey Max, always love your videos on your channel...always informative and straight to the point. Wanted your opinion on adding an eGPU Razor CoreX to the 2019 iMac any cost vs performance benefit with Premiere..I know that apple only supports AMD but there is a great script available that enables nvidia cards to be accessed. I saw a video you did back in Oct. of 2018 that addressed this..but since the specs have changed on the iMac since then, any thoughts you have on this would be greatly appreciated...Marty

I don’t understand where you are getting your real world numbers. My tests just showed the following... 2018 15” MacBook Pro on Mojave 2:17 4K Red Epic Export out of Premiere Pro using OpenCL eGPU = 7:57.06 Internal 560x = 14:27.78 That is a massive improvement!

I'm also getting much better export times and timeline performance in premiere. Also using a 2018 15” MacBook Pro on Mojave. Using Metal since OpenCL only supports clamshell mode so far. I like having my MBP screen open. Cutting a mix of C300, C200 (raw and compressed), and a little A7s footage. I think something may be off in your setup.

Kevin Gjetley btw- I haven’t run into any issues using OpenCL with it. I can run and external dell monitor via hdmi from a dongle instead of going through the eGPU.

So am I getting this right, if I have a 2016 MBP & FCPX even a Vega 64 eGPU probably wouldn’t be worth it? (because of the CPU limits) Or would a test be needed to confirm?
@MaksimYuryev
@MaksimYuryev 5 жыл бұрын
I would like to test it but I did test a WX 9100 and that did show some good improvements especially with raw video. I'm not sure how those compare but I would say the Vega 64 is a much better buy than this if you have a 15" and don't need to connect a thunderbolt 3 dispaly.

Those are old articles. With high Sierra you can right click on a program hit info and select “prefer eGPU” and then it will be used for both. The results in this video are using it that way.
