787b is only cool for the sound, its a pretty junk race car, never played higher than p5 minus lemans and it only won due to that group c became died as the FIA wanted it to become a formula series so they made it so that year the teams would run the formula one engines. All the cars were horribly unreliable and mazda didnt even have a f1 engine so if they didnt change it so that you could run with 200kgs of ballast if you kept the engine that wasn’t the formula engines, the mazda wouldn’t have been able to compete in the first place. But there was a hole in the rushed rulebook that made the mazda 787 not required to run with 200kgs of ballast. And even though it was so much lighter than everything else, schumacher was on to win the race until the mercedes engine failed, and he was way ahead up until that point. The 787B only won due to the fact it was a new engine and there was a hole in the rulebook. It never had any other good results besides the one lemans race out of pure luck. It also destroyed one of the drivers hearing he had to retire from racing entirely. Utter failure of a car.

Given any set of rules, engineers will always try to find clever ways to gain any advantage they can, even if the car ends up being outlawed shortly after. That gray area between what's legal an what's not is pretty much the heart of innovation and thinking outside the box mentality in motorsports. We see this stuff in F1, WRC, NASCAR, SuperGT... you name it. Mazda was well aware the 787B couldn't compete in outright speed with other Group C prototypes but remember this is endurance, being fast alone isn't guarantee of anything. After the 1990 24h of Le Mans debacle, Mazda underwent huge changes in their racing division for the following year; they called Jacky Ickx for advice, they improved their 787 with significant gains in both chassis rigidity, brakes and engine (hence 787 *B* ) but more importantly, *they developed a very precise racing strategy based on reliability and fuel efficiency* after 24h of uninterrupted testing (something that Porsche had been doing for years, most teams did 24h of testing too but split in several days). All this was of course thanks to the change in 1991 Group C regulations concerning those 3.5L displacement powerplants that were a mechanical mess. Mazda was extremly clever to see this chance from the previous year and take the 1991 24h of Le Mans very seriously from the very beginning, knowing they were lighter and more reliable than its competitors if they put effort to improve. And they nailed it. Also, historical context, this win came as the cherry on top to the utter domination of the IMSA GTU and GTO RX-7s during the 80s, and now this prototype managed to win. And in Le Mans no less! The concept of _"utter failure"_ here is questionable at best if you start looking more closely from their perspective. Even then, all the R&D that had been poured over the 787B in terms of software simulations, finite element method and engine know-how ended up leaking onto privateer racing teams in further racing endeavours. Not to mention actual cars within the company. Mazda stopped outsourcing coatings and apex seals manufacturing and began building an entirely new production lineup for the 787B, allowing them to improve at a much faster pace with new in-house technology that ended up in the 13B-REW engine from the RX-7 later on!

@@johnbrennan8611 GT2 Nordschleife was pretty easy and fun, have not played GT7 yet but for sure playing back then was not that hard.

@@jdcp3375 For me it was the only track I had to just drive it. Other tracks I was very good a memorizing braking points and things like that but at the North Ring I have a hard time. Even Le Mans I have memorized but not North Ring.

The fact it didn't just have 3 rotors but 4????? and yet it was more reliable than any car on the road today, it had zero issues in le mans, and that was its claim to fame, aside from the fact it's got a staggering amount of sheer beauty. It screams bloody hell on the road, but I have never heard a greater symphony of screams in my entire life.

Iconic, absolutely. Most iconic, I don't think so. Being a rotary addict & owner of multiple rotary powered cars it's hard for me to say this but I have to say the Porsche 917 is probably the most iconic of Le Mans cars.

Porsche 917K, GT40 and The 962C are so much more famous than this failed experiment from mazda that won lemans out of luck

@@ToyotaCorolla-qs7ml nice name, I own a 4AGZE powered 1986 Corolla GT-S coupe. But beating all 3 TWR 7.4L Jags by at least 2 laps ain't luck bro. It's good strategy with the weight loopholes they discovered & a beast of a car, it was able to break the Sauber Mercedes as they pushed too hard to keep up with the Mazda's pace. It was also a beast because it kept pace with vehicles that had multiple hundreds of more Lbs-ft of torque. And the only reason it didn't win again is because the FIA, like most governing bodies, banned it after it won lol.

But the fact is at least mazda can prove that to other racing teams like Mercedes, porsche, Nissan the cars that raced the 787B back In the day they can build and race a rotary powered Le Mans prototype. We all know rotary engines are unreliable, very low MPG, but the end of the day if mazda haven't built a le Mans prototype we wouldn't have the 787B. I'm very grateful that mazda did.

technically it didnt annihilate the '91 Le Mans as it was on the slower end in its catagory and won purely on other cars dropping out, thats why we didnt see it again
