According to Jennie there were multiple factors that brought on the emotion in Stay. She has said that she helped write the song and bc of that it hits her harder when she performs. She wrote the song as a trainee and obvi the trainee program was incredibly tough for them, losing close friends from the program, the intense criticism and insecurity as well as not knowing if they would ever debut at all with their debut being pushed back multiple times. In addition, not only was she facing intense hate at the time, Jennie also mentioned that that was their first “real” concert for their own fans (they had only played university festivals before) and was basically what the band had dreamed about all through their trainee days and looking out in the crowd and seeing all their fans singing along combined with all they had been through, really hit her hard in that moment.

Jennie wrote the song, so i'm guessing that's why the more somber parts (and why she cried during the live) are focusing on her as she is the one who penned those emotions. And no, the song is not about romance. One thing to remember, Jennie was a trainee for longer then the other members. She saw many friends come and go during her time before all the BP members became friends, and I'm sure in the back of her mind there were times she was worried she would loose them too. I don't know at what time she wrote the song (other then it being while a trainee), but she has said it was in response to all those friends she lost due to the hardship of being a trainee, even being forced to let one of her friends go from the program... I think it was during one of the 24/365 episodes Jennie said that her and the other girls vowed to never give up, if they got kicked that's fine, but they would not give up. Maybe that's where the feeling of hope in the song comes from. She knew Jisoo, Lisa and Rosé would at least not leave her willingly, they would fight to "stay".

I’ve always thought about the meaning of “Stay” but this is the best I could come up with. It seems like the lyrics represent the five stages of grief (denial, anger, bargaining, and acceptance). As for the MV itself, the most evident theme is the girls being left in the world after the apocalypse. You spotted all the signs and messages except for one in Rosé’s scene at the beginning where a sign says “Dead people’s belongings for sale.” Also, towards the end, the people in white aren’t only guys. There are also some girls there, so I would say they are probably the people who didn’t survive the apocalypse and are already gone. That’s why I think this song and MV can represent how we deal with loss, may it be a romantic love, friendship, family, or loss as in someone literally passing away. In the first parts of the MV, they were singing “Stay with me” which was addressed to the person who’s about to leave them or has already left. The girls were also isolated in most scenes as they were dealing with their own grief. But in the end, they came together and as they sang the lyrics “Stay with me” again, it seems like they were already talking about each other, not the ones who left. They seem happier but even though the girls have already moved on and found each other, the ghost of their past will always be a part of them (the people in white). It’s like they didn’t forget about it, but they just learned to accept it.

I think the Stay MV is something that has so many metaphors. Just by the color grading of the MV, it is very dull and quite pale unlike their other videos, it somehow reflects on how the lyrics are talking about a dying toxic love that they don't wanna let go of. It is also a very post-apocalyptic kind of set which is like at the end of the relationship and all the chaos with it, they're left with just emptiness and mess. That part where those four colors exploded upwards, reminded me of those flare guns which are mostly used to ask for help. They're stuck in the emptiness and loneliness after the relationship which is why they're asking for someone to come and help or save them.

Stay is my favorite blackpink song, and their most underrated one. It's so peaceful, calming and yet so sad! When I get very anxious or when I feel like everything is going too fast and I can't catch up, can't stop for a moment to think or rest I listen to "stay". It instantly calms me. The MV is really beautiful and embodies the song perfectly, everything is destroyed and a mess but the girl are there, singing softly and calming you. It's like a safety place! Same with the colors, very pastels very soft. Same with jenlisa's rap. Forever young and stay both made me a fan. I absolutely love the live version of "stay" in Tokyo dome. Jennie was the most emotional during stay performance because she has said that she actually wrote a big part of the song and while she has not revealed who the song is about there are some speculations on whether the song was about her struggling to debut and getting close to debuting only to have to wait again and do it all apart from her family, thus "stay with me". The only thing we know about it is that she wrote it during her trainee days, before debut and that was their first official concert in Soul in 2018 so hearing the blinks sing along that song for the first time made her really feel the whole meaning of it.

People already told you why Jennie cried, but I think they're mistaken in one thing. She already said she wrote that song in her trainee days cause she had to send home a good friend of her every month, so it's probably about that feeling of being left alone and the people you love always leaving, when all she wanted is for them to stay with her until the end. I don't think she thought that song in a romantic way, but the other writers decided to make the song more relatable and "comercial", so they changed the theme of the lyrics to a romantic relationship (but it actually still fits both)

I loved Stay the first time I listened to it and it became my favorite song by them. And I think it is still bcs of the depth and I just love ballads haha. But the thing is,,, the biggest reason I love it so much and it means so much to me is because if we materialize that love that is between us (the pinks n blink), it would become this song.
