I always assumed it was due to some international maritime law that merchant ships couldn't be armed. I had no idea it was just classic rich companies being cheap and risking the lives of their employees.
@moappleseider1699

@@tsdobbi Actually it was a combination of both, so you aren't wrong. Maritime law, and the varying laws of different countries when it comes to weapons especially firearms entering and leaving countries. It's still a big problem for yachts. There are certain areas that have little floating stations where you can pick up and drop of weapons and armed security so they don't enter a countries waters. I actually saw a video on it years ago here on KZfaq.
@JohnDoe-wt9ek
@JohnDoe-wt9ek Жыл бұрын
@@tsdobbi International law has a lot more to do with it than companies being cheap. There's a reason that Chinese Fishing Boats are always problematic, because they'll enter a certain nation's limit of national waters, and when found, will flee to international waters where its, essentially, lawless ocean. If I remember correctly, a week or so ago, a South American country destroyed a Chinese Fishing Boat. Sent a blatant message to those slant eye fucks that they will not tolerate breach of national waters by poach fishers...

14:11 To answer that question red lights are used in passageways and berthings at night. You can still sleep with a red light on and to help protect your night vision. Blue lights are used because you can still see a monitor or screen and they put less strain on the eyes. White lights can not be used outside because you can see white lights really far away on the ocean.

@Justn Saliga G4S, the largest military contractor on earth, has about a dozen floating armories across the earth parked in international waters in the indian and pacific oceans for this exact purpose. Guards from G4S who get contracted onto the ship spend most of the journey memorizing the ship, and familiarizing themselves with emergency duties and protocols. Then, when they get to a region like the horn of africa, the ship will detour slightly and meet up with a small boat not much bigger than a yacht, and weapons will be delivered to the guards, then once in the med, another boat from a seperate armory picks up the guns and heads back. G4S likes to set up a revolving door of guns going back and forth between pairs of armories so that as few specialized trips as possible have to be made and the same set of guns just gets cycled back and forth.

Been a little bit since I read Phillips' book or watched the movie (and it's one of my all-time favorite movies), but I recall one of the major changes from reality was the ladder the pirates used. In the movie, it's what you'd expect pirates to use: a rusty, skinny, cobbled-together, hooked ladder. According to Phillips' book, the ladder was a brand new, shiny, aluminum ladder, like you'd buy at Home Depot, and it was the perfect height to get aboard their ship. Even he was astonished to see such an incongruous piece of equipment being used by Somali pirates.

Good commentary. They didn't mention how the captain disregarded the company's anti-piracy plans and put the ship in the path of danger himself. His crew members were pissed about this book and the movie portraying him as a hero. The seals were definitely heros. Captain Phillips, not so much.

To be fair, at that time, there were very few safe paths and were much longer. So, taking the recommended route(s) was much slower and more difficult.

@@MichaelGalt To be fair I’d argue that by disregarding the approved routes, he ended up costing the company a lot more time and money which he hoped to save by going rogue. Not to mention the harm’s way he put himself in, and that of his crew and the seals.

@@pridenprejudice2004 To be fair, even on the approved routes they were facing piracy issues. So it wasnt exactly safe any way. He did what he thought was right and bad men took advantage. The bad men are at fault.

I was watching another video about this and the Navy personnel at the end were all real sailors not actors. The Corpsmen at the end that is doing the exam on Tom Hanks was super nervous working with him because she was so star struck. He talked to her to calm her down so she could do this.

i think someone told me capt phillips got himself in trouble with the shipping company about this coz he went thru this route to shave off some time although it was a known pirate ambush territory... instead of the long "safer" route.

@@Benji-jj2bg Let's also not be under the impression that if they didn't get ambushed and instead made it to their destination quicker and used less fuel, he'd have been commended for saving money. The only reason they really even care about this happening is because it cost them money.

Just for clarification - In the film when the RHIB approaches the life boat and the crew of the RHIB is carrying firearms, that was the ship’s VBSS team and not the SEAL team. VBSS teams are made up of volunteers from the ships crew, and would’ve been involved only temporarily until the SEAL team arrived.
