Blacksmith Forged Medieval Arrowheads. How to make medieval longbow arrows. Blacksmith Matt Lukes from Canada gifted me some awesome hand-forged arrow heads in Medieval style and in this video I show how I fit hand made arrowheads to arrow shafts and fletch them. I describe the simple techniques I use to fletch arrows, fit arrowheads and strengthen the nock if necessary. I show the materials I use including feathers, buffalo-horn strengtheners, blacksmith forged arrowheads and adhesives plus the tools and jigs that can aid production. Using carefully selected wooden arrow shafts suitable in spine, length and diameter, these techniques will produce a realistic looking arrow that can be used for clout shooting or similar when loosed from a heavy English longbow - the famous warbow.

I'm Mick Grewcock, retired from business and now self-learning the arts of longbow- and film-making. Join me in my light-hearted quest for knowledge as I learn to combine the ancient woodworking craft of bow-making with digital videography and film making - I'd be delighted to have you for company on this bizarre journey combining digital and primitive technology.
I have a deep passion for the medieval English longbow, the great warbow - the powerful version of the English longbow that earned its fearsome reputation during the Middle Ages, notably the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries on the ferocious battle fields of France and England during the One Hundred Years War (and in the hands of Robin Hood too!). It is an iconic weapon - and to this day, exudes heritage and awesome power.
Lots of bow making on my channel - do browse, view, like comment and subscribe. I have videos on making yew, hazel, elm and blackthorn longbows as well as many others related to primitive and instinctive archery, target archery arrow and bow making. In my videos you will see and hear what it is like to self learn bow making. I am self-taught as a bowyer - learning the hard way to work wood to make a bow - and still discovering every day. Sometimes I fail, sometimes I succeed; but I'm always learning. I also explore the UK's rural landscape, sometimes in search of bow making woods, discovering survival skills, sometimes in search of the glories of this landscape.

Here's a quick tip: use the trim on your door frame to draw straight lines for your fletches. Just put down a strip of masking tape, drop the shaft into the angle, and use the masked edge of the frame to guide your pencil.

Nice one Mick.....a couple of tips for budding Fletchers, if you find that you have made a mistake with cutting the pile cone and the pile is a little on the loose side..mix some cornflour into the epoxy adhesive to thicken it and it will then work as a gap filler, allowing to to straighten the pile to the shaft. When I fletch arrows I find the best "Super glue" to use is of the gel variety as it fills small voids and doesn't run so badly. I use it on all my wooden arrows (and my carbon shafts).

Always a pleasure watcing your's video Mike they are well edited as educating. Just a small advice about arrow heads, I find hot glue beter than two part epoxy because if the arrow breaks (often in my case ) it's easy to remove the tips simply by lighter. Once again great video 👍

Hi mick. My bows coming along great. Lots of hard work with the wrasp though. Another question again sorry my friend, but regarding shaping of the bow, is there any rule of thumb to say if the bow should be totally round, or flat on the belly or flat on the front side.? Or maybe flat plained front and back. Erm.
@MickGrewcock
@MickGrewcock 5 жыл бұрын
Depends to some extent on the wood type Wayne. One caveat though before I write more: I'm still learning. That said, certain woods are better at others at dealing with compressive and tensile forces. Yew is wonderful (and maybe osage as well: never worked it though) because it can stand almost any shape and still become a bow - round section, D-section, flat, oval etc. But certain hardwoods - say hazel as a UK example - is happy with tension but less so with compression. This means that you have to work with the wood's qualities/weaknesses. So with hazel, the belly should be flattened (imagine squashed rectangle as the cross section) to avoid concentrating the compressive force into a narrow area. Same can be said for other hardwoods such as elm. So if it isn't yew, then make the belly flattish. Hope that helps.

Working in oak is very hard. Not just how hard the wood actually is but how the grain structure forms. I tried a oak self bow and after many hours I tilled it too 98lb at 31" at 32" it exploded. If you try a oak bow prepare for disappointment. Interesting journey though.

@@rodparsons521 I've done that Rod. It made a a very nice bow that draws 55lb @ 28" and I still use it day, but white oak is a different story. You could make a good war bow out of white oak and it would be powerful but its how long it would take you and how many disappointments you'd have.
