Blacksmithing - Forging A Campfire Tripod With A Trammel Hook

I like cooking outside, even if I don't go camping very often. So this week, I forged a campfire tripod. It's not a very difficult build and it's perfect for a weekend project.
The trammel hook is based on the tutorial made by Dirty Smith (watch his full tutorial here • How to forge a trammel... .
I use 10mm square stock of mild steel and 30mm flat bar.
I made it a little bit too long for the size of the legs, so if you want to try and make your own, I recommand you to make longer legs (around 6ft-2m). Once it was done, I brushed it with a wire brush and put two coat of varnish to protect it from rusting.

Shit dude that's brilliant work... i'm so jealous of your forge, but i have a question... why the chainmail at the bottom of the anvil? spectacular work, keep the forging coming :D
@RedSmith
@RedSmith 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot Olivier. Glad you liked it. The chain has two purposes. One, reduce the sound by absorbing the vibrations while forging (but a small magnet on the anvil would do the job too). Two, hold a piece of metal when forging. With some weight on it, you can use it as a thrid hand, which come pretty handy :)
@julsworkshop
@julsworkshop 6 жыл бұрын
Hi, great work as usual ! I know nothing about forging so I have two questions. You work without gloves, isn't it hot ?? And what do you spray on the metal ? Thanks for your videos !!
@RedSmith
@RedSmith 6 жыл бұрын
Jul's Workshop Thank you very much. I usually don't wear gloves when I forge. If the piece is small I hold it with a pair of tongues (very hot), if I use a long bar I hold it with my bare hand, because it is cold enough to hold and your hand is your best tongues. I like to feel the steel in my hands while I forge, whereas gloves give me a better grip with powertools or when I do woodworking. I sprayed two coats of varnish to protect it from moisture and rust 😊👍

¿Y todo ese trabajo.... solamente para subir o bajar la olla...?.... ¡¡¡áaaaaaagggh...!!! ( ¡¡¡ Con tres palos y un alambre se soluciona todo...!!! )
@RedSmith
@RedSmith 6 жыл бұрын
