I finally made the griddle hinges for my model 1866 Blackstone griddle. I have been searching for a long time and could never find anything so I made my own. If you would like it to match better, then paint the hinges black. If you enjoyed this video, please share and like.

You have my vote to be a Blackstone Engineer! Why in the Sam Hill would they make a cover that doesn't hinge. Bad Design on their part! Thank the Good Lord we still have people that use their brains! Awesome modification to the lid sir! 5 Stars 🌟 🌟🌟🌟🌟

I guessing to stop people from lowering the cover while cooking. The stove isn't designed for that, as I recall. Trapping too much heat? It's not a grill, nor smoker.

Not that it matters, although they do help block the heat they were originally produced to help block the wind from blowing out you fire. That was one of the biggest complaints with the older style Blackstones was that design made it like a wind tunnel and it was hard to keep the flame going on a windy day. But yes they do work well for both reasons.

Just did it to mine and works great. On my model (blackstone 4 burner) I just used the factory screws in the brackets for the side shelves. There was plenty of threads to do it. Further, at the hinge point there was a 3/16" gap between the two brackets on both sides so I just used 1" Screws, Washers (3 each side) to take up the space in-between the brackets and then a nylon insert nuts. Works great. Like other comments I opened it and closed it dozens of times, seemingly fascinated by this. And of course we're cooking with her tonight because welll...I'm excited to use it. Thanks for your video!!

@@fixthemthings Could you use another bolt and nut as a stop for the bracket to rest against when open? @@showcasecharlie11 the bracket sticking out hasn’t been a problem for me. My griddle backs up to a railing. Also the bracket does not harm the cover at all since I rounded it. Really good detail on the steps, parts, etc., without getting too drawn out. Thanks for making this video! I also want to use the hard-cover as a heat-retention lid (for use during cooking) but the cover explicitly states it shouldn't be used like that. Do you think it's just because those "feet" make contact with the cooking surface when the lid is down? I'm considering doing your hinge modification, and then putting in a different foot/support, maybe in the corners near the front of the unit, and removing the existing "feet". Thoughts?

Not exactly sure what you are describing. Moves how? Did you use lock nuts on the pivot point and tighten them enough to create drag so the lid won’t fall down?

@fixthemthings I haven't drilled into the lid yet because when I tried and mocked up, hinge on lid the pivot hole on lid hinge moves when I move hood up and down

So my top is about 1/2” to wide for this to work without bending brackets out. Can i just throw a couple washers on each hinge screw?
@fixthemthings
@fixthemthings Жыл бұрын
1/2” wider than the frame or the griddle pan? Should be the same as mine. The brackets may bend a little with no problem.

So i actually ended up putting 6 washers on each side my lid had alot of space. But it still works great

Did the shelves still fold down, did you have to shim the front brackets?

Everything works like normal. That’s why I made it this way. Hope you like it.

Thank you so much for this video. I bought all the parts exactly as you laid them out. Question, does the lock nut become a problem with the heat? ie melting the plastic?
@fixthemthings
@fixthemthings Жыл бұрын
Nope. No problem. This is why I designed it this way. It is not attached to the cast iron. There may be heat that comes out the side but not hot enough to melt it. I haven’t had an issue. You will like it.

Thank you. Last question, any issues with the zinc plated 6” corner brackets rusting? I will have mine covered just like yours, but if I am using all SS screws, should I consider stainless steel brackets? I just hate drilling SS, it always dulls my bits. I would rather go with the zinc plate like you show.ed. Thanks again.

@@shahramhomami no problem with the zinc. I had a hard time finding some of those parts. That’s why some are from Home Depot and some from Lowes. Supply chain issues I guess. I didn’t see any SS brackets. I thought this setup would be the easiest reliable way to do it. Hope you like it.

Can you use this lid to help cook or will it mess it up? That's my concern

I wouldn’t use the lid. I think the paint will eventually peel off. Maybe into the food. I don’t think they used heat resistant paint.

I just purchased a Member’s Mark 4 burner griddle. I’ve seen that all covers for Blackstone 36” fit my griddle. Can this mod be done on the Member’s Mark griddle?
