No talking, no music. Just sounds of the shop. How I cut and cauterize the foam inserts in my tool box. A little OCD, but keeps em secure. Have you tried using a CNC router bit in your drill press? It is my preferred method of doing this. I trace the shapes just like you did, then set the depth on my drill press, lower the bit into the middle of a shape then slide the foam around to cut out the foam. I love the perfectly smooth bottom of the cut out and I get cleaner edges as well. You can even get fancy and make the handle parts deeper by just adjusting the height on your drill press a few times while tracing the handle area. You can also use the angle on your drill press to have the foam overlap the object being stored to really hold it in place, especially if you are cutting the foam for a case that might be moved around or even set down upside down.

Great idea, i will do this for sure. But, i will have two pieces of foam that together will be as thick as your piece of foam. Cut all the way through on one piece of the foam and then glue the other under it. This would ensure a much nicer base perhaps. Thanks for this video!! :)

I like this idea and was thinking that's how I'd do it. I think that'd be easier for someone like me without a propane torch. I can just use my utility knife to make the cut-outs.

@@BlacktailStudio Have second foam in a different color and then you easily see what is missing. Also makes you feel guilty for not putting them back in the correct place every time

You dont need foam at the bottom, just a regular toolbox liner, or something else thin, to maximize drawer space

Happy hour with hubs and he played this! I am crazy ocd with everything! So I’m watching this and loving it and then asked hubs how I would retrieve the buried (and beautifully organized items) without breaking my nails 🤨 then you heated the copper pipe and I gasped! Yeasss!!!! You’re brilliant! My hubs is cringing! 😂 his garage space is getting a quarantine makeover!! Thanks for sharing!!

First saw this many moons ago in a squadron maintenance shop in the AF. Now I know how they did the cutouts so precisely. Note: they must have had half the thickness foam sheet of yours, because by painting the bottom of the drawer bright yellow, taking a glance through dozens of drawer at the end of shifts could show quickly which tools weren't accounted for. Cool.

Loved the video! As you said, no talking, no music, no bs...just a great informative video! 🙂Little things like using the heated copper pipe to make the finger holes to grab the tools easier, and how you made the heater tool cutters. Cam, if you were OCD, you'd LASER cut 1" foam on a CNC then glue it to another 1" slab and have the most perfectest tool drawer liner. Love your work and videos with or without narration. I am jumping on this late, and have a few suggestions for anyone wanting to do this. -- Use not a silver Sharpie? (Cam, I'm genuinely not taking a dig at you, unlike my opening remark, which definitely is.) -- Search for 'soldering iron foam cutter'. If that is an option, it makes for a very effective/efficient cutting tool. -- This method is excellent for a DIY bespoke tool arrangement. For an alternative arrangement approach (yes), see Adam Savage's foam core tool drawer organization video.

Leave the allen wrench in tact and put it into the wood handle as is. Let it stick out an inch or a little more. Then when you heat the allen wrench it will help to cut the bottom of the foam if you just give it a 1/4 turn when melting. Also I was thinking that if there is a way to attach to a solder gun tip that would work too ! Cheers ! :-)

I thought this kind of foam was supposed to pull out in layers....it seems you were left with a pretty rough bottom. I think the end result is dope and I don’t care what people say. There’s a reason why aviation and other highly organized trades do this...no missing tools, quick cleanup, quick access.

I suggest cutting the initial size of the foam with a table saw - you will get the cleanest uniform cut. With a knife, the blade always bows to one side :-) I’ve cut so many sheets of this stuff

Great video! Totally enjoyed it! My question is a departure from your project but hoping for a satisfactory outcome. I have a lot of walnut but nothing that is close to 2” thick. My son wants a walnut table that is 2” thick. My objective is to use two pcs of 3/4” MDF laminated to make a core of 1 1/2” and then apply a 12” walnut veneer on the top and edges using tight bond lll to adhere it. Am I wasting my time and materials attempting this? Would appreciate your comments/advise. Thanks, Gerry

Yup also just make the heated cutting stylus out of piano wire or old nicrome wire from an electric clothes dryer element or tig welding filler rod wire.

I bought a little bunsen burner to connect to a propane tank for just this purpose 👍 I do a LOT of foam work for mould form making and get sick of the electric carvers getting cool in the cut. Using simple carbon steel (old bandsaw blades) in wooden handles and the bunsen is much quicker.

About to do a LOT of shadowing & am lookin around for an easier/faster way than the tracing & Xacto knife method I've used in the past. Re-heating that tool so much seems like it'd be frustrating and stinky. I don't have to dig any foam out of the bottom because my holes will go all the way through so as to reveal a different color foam mat underneath (job requirement). I'm thinking about a reciprocating saw or Dremel with a saw/cutoff attachment. _Anything_ but an Xacto because that sucks!

Howdy Cam...I've been doing some research (umm, video watching) on how to shape/cut foam for a few of my projects, came across yours (been watching your table builds for awhile). I love this but I can’t imagine how annoying it was to heat up constantly. I’m also aware I’m 4 yrs late oops and I’m quite stupid but would a soldering iron work?

Looks great, but i'm not sure why some tools you cut half and melted half. Other tools you melted all or cut all. Did you like the finished result of the cut or melted parts better?

Basically, curved is better melted. Straight is better cut.

Kewl. Breaking-down the foam: Use your table saw. Top quality, fast, easy. Electric hot knives, available in many sizes, make cutting boundaries easy. Same for finger holes & flattening bottoms.

Easier to cauterize curves. Easier to cut straight.

cutting for straight lines and cauterizing for following odd shapes. it's not easy to cut curvy lines in foam. especially with tight radii.

Oh! I feel pain seeing you cutting hardened Allen wrenches with pliers and hack saw. I would use a grinding disk to cut hard steel. Dremel would work fine too. Then my diagonal cutting pliers would still work.

Great ideas, great work! But this is not OCD worthy and in fact its messing with mine. Those finger holes are all over the place. There is no need to go as deep as you do in so many of those. You can layer them so the handles are deep but the blades are sitting up high.

Rather than cut up allen wrenches, why not use finish nails? Also rather than cutting thick foam and having to pull it out in uneven pieces, why not purchase foam in thinner sheets I” or 3/4”. Cut completely through one sheet so the cutouts can just be pushed through and then just gluing the top with cutouts to a clean bottom sheet. Much cleaner looking and not maybe so messy on the hands. Just a thought.

I saw OCD and thought this was going to be clean. This disturbed me a little bit. lol I do appreciate the silence of the video. Everything looks good but the bottom because of the way it is torn out. Even though it gets covered by the tools, when the tools are removed it doesn't look clean. I would take the blade and compress the side of the foam that is not being removed and cut at an angle. It should give you a cleaner bottom surface. Other than that, I thought everything looks great.

Ok like, this is mad satisfying, but I'm not sure what this has to do with OCD? I myself have diagnosed OCD, and....I'm not following. I mean I understand the whole deal with the stereotype of OCD, with the whole "lol I'm so OCD, I like things tidy and organized lololol so quirky!" but like...that's not what OCD actually is. OCD is a debilitating anxiety based disorder characterized by unreasonable thoughts and fears that lead to compulsive behaviors. Like "If I don't turn my light on and off 7 times, my mom will get into a car accident and die"

Not the standard of neatness to which I would aspire. Too rushed and lacking in attention to detail. I like the copper tube for the finger holes - much cheaper than a Kaizen Hot Knife Tamper - but why not ensure that the holes are properly aligned ?

Im ocd...Ive been using EVA foam for over 20 years and that stuff is hard to cut, yet it was neater and cleaner than his. I mean, showcasing the method, and while recording I can see it being a pita but it would bug me having that at the bottom. Beyond using two layers of foam, I would pour plastidip or that rubber in a case (I cant recall, the ones that made a boat out of screen doors...that rubber stuff), and let it settle flat at the bottom of those mouse nibbles lol.

@@RipRoaringGarage hahahaha. I have terrible ocd. It’s a blessing and a curse. I wanna get shadow foam so bad but I just bought a 3 drawer 1 shelf craftsman toolbox and the tools I have barely fit in just jumbled up piled together. I wanna try and get some epoxy and mold something. But if I did that it would take SOOOO long cuz I need to make sure all the sockets etc are even and level while pouring liquid onto them. Then I need to figure out how to make sure I can get them out once it’s dried. (Probably baby powder or Rosin bag powder. Something like that on the tools then put them in) don’t know how to keep them from moving tho

@@Mike-we3rb I know the feeling...today I had a terrible day, and none of the foams came out right...so tomorrow Im redoing everything. It can be a curse, because its setting me back a day...and I still would like to edit at some point this year...Im so far behind that its hurting my channel (which Im OCD about too because why not...I wish I could just keep things in a pile, without them in organized systems, records in spreadsheets, inspection timetables with reminders send to my email....its tiring lol)

Also same here I forget what I said in last message so sorry if I’m repeating myself but I’m tryna edit my own videos for yt. They are all ocd fresh down to every details. I haven’t posted one yet in like 6 months of filming. I’m doing voice overs afterwards instead of talking through the videos also so it’s gonna take even longer. Either higher quality videos but not posted as often or lower quality videos more often. I have to find a median lol

@@Mike-we3rb Yup...Had to cut new foams, but I had some extras so no extra cost. Im experimenting with different foam types. The typical stuff is too pricey, so Im using other kinds...we will see how it holds up over time. EVA was good but comes out sloppy since its very dense and a pain to cut (with medical grade scapels even). I understnad with the vids. Im disabled, and have to deal with doctors and all, so I tried uploading weekly for three years, and minimal results. Now Im just going to post longer format, 45m to 90m long once a month, but Im in a break now. Im redoing my garage and tool box lol...and its killing me. I was not as productive as I wanted today. Im doing these weird side protectors for the box for some tools that can slam in while placing them back.

There is nothing OCD about this. Major reduction of storage capacity along with limiting future addition/expansion of tools, non-reconfigurable, not to mention a huge waste of time. If he was actually OCD he would have used a label maker on all of his drawer fronts a long time ago.... Don't bother asking me how I know. This type of storage is good for things like Camera equipment and Firearms. Has no place in a functioning workshop.
