I have had a number of people messaging me on the channel telling me that they have been having the same issues as myself with their Blade 330s Helicopters!! quite often resulting in crashes, So in response I decided to make a video showing how I overcame these issues by adjusting the attitude trim settings!! in a hope to maybe help these guys have a little bit more success with their Blade 330 Helie's!! Please remember that it has taken me a lot of adjustments to come up with these settings and that they are for my Heli and could quite possibly be completely different for your Heli!! It is just a guide to show how I alleviated the problems with my Heli and you make these changes at you own risk.

Hello, Ian: First of all, thank you so much for each of your videos. They're very helpful for both us newbies and experienced pilots. Sharing knowledge among us heli pilots saves us time and effort which translates into more Safe flying time for us all. When I received my Blade 330S, I believe Roll was at 300 and Pitch was at 0. My maiden flight for the 330S did not have the issues you experienced. After watching your video I became curious so I made the changes to Roll 0 and Pitch 0 and during lift off ( I try to fly the disc ) using only my collective stick ( once in the air I'll use the Cyclic Stick ) the 330S came straight off the pad ( I use a flat surface similar to your video ) and did not experience any control issues. Between my original factory settings and your improved settings I saw the 330S have a more controlled or even lift off. When using my original factory settings I saw the 330S have a bit of a forward tilt which at some point could contribute to a Blade strike with the ground. For now, I will continue to keep the setting of Roll 0 and Pitch 0 and make note of my original factory setting for reference at a later date if required. Thank You, Ian, for all your time and effort in providing the rest of us with your experiences.

Interesting video, Thank you! I have 2 330s. One I purchased new and flies perfectly out of the box. The second was used. Levelled the swashplate, checked blade pitch and it leans forward terribly taking off and drifts. I looked at the Trim Attitude settings and they are very different. The one that flies perfectly is Roll 478 and Pitch 88, the one with issues is Roll +250, Pitch -250. When the weather improves,changes need to be made to the used one. Your video and looking at my other settings, gives me an indication where I need to go.

Hia Greg, I've been getting messages like yours for a few years now!! The 330s can be perfect or bad, my one was very bad. When I bought my 330 I had been building and flying Helie's for a few years!! I wanted to use the 330s with SAFE, to teach myself how to turn both left and right, so when I started flying the 330s I noticed that on take off the Heli would start leaning around, also then in normal mode or SAFE my one would drift drastically to the left!! So I looked into these issues and was told not to take off in Normal mode but to take off in idle up one which would allow the Flight controler to set!! The very first time I did this, the Heli took off perfectly but as soon as I switched to Normal mode it drifted away so badly that it crashed, so to cut a long story short!! It was sent back to Horizon who rebuilt it after checking it for faults, and said it was pilot error!! It wasn't it was that factory set attitude pitch of -250 and +250 once I altered this making sure the swashplate stays level when you switch from idle up one to normal mode the Heli flies so much better 😀👍

Got it sorted out. Changed the Attitude Trim settings with no improvement. Compared the angle of the servo arm on the side servo on both helis. The one that was acting up actually was adding down. Moved the arm back one spline tooth. Better, but still had the same issue. Changed Attitude trim to 0 and 0 and it flies perfectly. Thanks for your help!

Nice one Ian. I have to say I kind of forgot the idea of getting a 330 after all your troubles, but every time I see it flying in your channel I just think it looks and sounds superb and the itch starts all over again. I've started hovering the 230 without stability again in an effort to move forward. It's a whole different job that. Not too bad with absolutely no wind but even a gentle breeze turns it into a nightmare 👍😁🚁

Thanks! Very helpful. Based on your video I checked the factory settings - same here. I adapted the attitude trim to 0 (roll) and 150 (pitch) - now the swash plate stays on the same place when switching between flight modes. Yes my 330s was drifting really bad to the left and forward and on take off it was leaning around almost toppling over!! Be cautious with the Gyro!! A lot of them are faulty!! If your Heli is drifting bad in normal mode I would advise you to speak to Horizon Hobby and get the Gyro checked and changed under warranty!! A lot of people have had to do this!! If you have no joy with Horizon Hobby then I would make the changes to the Attitude trim settings, but the 0 0 settings that I went with was what it took to make my Heli fly correctly!! Yours might be different!! Is your Heli performing badly?

Hello David, a subscriber last week was having the same issues with his brand new 330s!! He spoke to Horizon Hobby who told him he needed to update his Gyro with the latest firmware!! He did this but his Heli still had a really bad right drift and unfortunately yesterday he crashed it!! My advice to you is get back in touch with Horizon Hobby and tell them about your issues!! And tell them you want it sorted, it's strange some Helie's like mine seem to be ok after the mod but others never fly correctly!! Horizon Hobby do fit new Gyro's for some people, but one guy I've spoke to said they have had is Heli for nearly a year😖

To be honest I didn't have any issues when I bought the FC6250HX for two of my Trex Helies only on the one that came on the 330s!! If you are going to adjust the Attitude control settings on your Gyro you will need a little bit of left on the swash plate to allow for the tourqe of the main blades, Be careful because in my experience if you have the swash plate perfectly level the heli will lean to the right on take off and spool down 😀👍

Nice video. Horizon in one of their setup videos states that the tilt to the right in stability mode is normal and to compensate for the tail trying to push left, however, that much tilt on the swash looks a bit extreme to me, and the fact that it is level in mode 1 also supports that conclusion. I'm about to install a new 6250 on my Blade 330S that I bought with a different flight controller on it. Me and a friend of mine who is an expert helicopter flyer have tipped it over about 3 times between us trying to take off. I want it back stock as it was when it was bought. I'll refer to this video when I'm setting it up. It flies fine as is IF you can get it off the ground. I don't like having to launch a helicopter abruptly instead of a normal takeoff.

Well I fitted the FC6250HX to two of my Trex Helie's and it has worked perfectly with no issues at all, when you buy it as open stock it has no attitude trim settings like the 330s has!! Not good really 😀👍

Hello, Ian: Can I ask you a question? When flying your helicopter(s), do you fly in "Normal Mode" or do you transition in flight to "Stunt 1" and/or "Stunt 2"? I know you normally fly "Sport" and not "Aerobatic". I need to learn how to fly my Blade 330S not in "Normal Mode" a d I was wondering what your learning path was to flying in "Stunt 1" or "Stunt 2" preferably with minimal or no crashing. I realize crashing will at some point happen for one reason or another so that is something to be expected or Unexpected as the case may be. I just wanted to ask you for your own opinion on how you chose to learn to fly without relying on "Normal mode" to keep you in the air. I need to build my strategy on how best to learn to fly the 330S without being hand held by the 330S. Thank You, Ian. Always enjoy watching your videos.
@IansRCExploits
@IansRCExploits 10 ай бұрын
Hi Joseph, when I learnt to fly a Heli, they only had tail Gyros, so crashing was something you did sadly!! My advice to you is set up your flight mode 1 but dumb the cyclic controls down in your dual rates, so when you swith into fm1 the Heli will be a bit easier to control, the secret then is when you get into difficulty you can either switch quickly back to normal mode!! So the Heli stabilises itself, I think you can also set a panic button that when pressed will instantly get you out of trouble, people refer to this as the " O shit button " Lol most of my new Helies now have the Microbeast plus Gyros on them and they seem to be much more stable when you fly than the spektrum!! I think the biggest issue when you get out of normal mode is over correction!! So you panic and your inputs to the cyclic controls are to hard and to big so lowering the rates can help to reduce this!! But of course to do stunts you will have to progress back up to high rates, I have no Interest in flying 3D and to be honest I'm just not a good enough Heli pilot to even consider it, just learning to fly Helies around like I do was a long and expensive learning curve!! I did post a real flight simulator video a few years back about how I taught myself to fly a Heli, take a look you might find some useful tips 😀👍

Very interesting. Out of interest I thought I'd check the settings on my newly purchased 230s v2. Not to adjust anything, just to explore and learn. The message on my spektrum tx says my receiver needs firmware update. Looks like I need to either buy the programming cable or Bluetooth device which is less expensive but looks like some people have had issues with the Bluetooth. Are you able to give any advice on the two types and the importance of firmware update?
@IansRCExploits
@IansRCExploits 3 жыл бұрын
Yes you need to do the update!! But the Bluetooth device is rubbish!! Very problematic!! Don't waste your money get the USB cable it works much better, you can't adjust as much on the 230s V2 but it works better than the 330s anyway!! My 230s flew great out of the box but I did do a trim flight which made it much more stable in the hover 👍😄

Yes the Fc6250hx does seem to have an issue in safe!! What I did was disconnect my motor activate SAFE On the factory attitude settings and then toggle from safe to flight mode 1 to adjust the swashplate and make sure it was staying as level as possible in Safe!! Most people see the swash on the factory settings tilt forwards and to the right!! Which seems to cause all sorts of problems, my 330s us flying well now in SAFE and doesn't drift much at all, I bought the Fc6250hx flybarless controler for a Trex 470lp but couldn't even get it to set up correctly!! I noticed with that one that the factory settings are now for Attitude pitch +250 and Roll -0 so I don't know how that would perform once SAFE was activated, anyway I ditched it and bought a Microbeast plus!! @@IansRCExploits nope. I have called every day for the past three days and they said they put A message in for a heli expert to call me back and still no call. I think something may be wrong with the flight controller because it’s also acting funny when I get it into servo adjustment mode. It’s like sometimes it will recognize the input to go to the next servo and sometimes it will not. Also still can’t get it into calibration mode maybe I will get someone from Horizon call me back soon.

Wish I would have watched your videos before purchase. Mine is near unflyable in safe mode. As a beginner would it be recommended to try it out of safe mode?
@IansRCExploits

I've been messaged by so many people that have all had the same issues!! And it nearly always ends up in a crash!! I learnt to fly a Heli without a SAFE mode but I won't lie it wasn't easy!! And I practiced for weeks on a simulator before flying for real, the problem with the 330s is that in flight modes 1 and 2 it is set up quite aggressively for 3D flying!! Not very good for a beginner!! The Helie's that I learnt to fly with were kits that I built so they were set up a lot more docile to make it easier for those first hovers!! Flying Helie's is a very steep learning curve!! And setting one up is a lot of work, I would advise you to try and get the SAFE mode working on your 330s as it will cut down on the amount of crashes you will have and save you a lot of money😄👍

@@IansRCExploits so I would need a controller with the digital display and what do I need to update the firmware?
@IansRCExploits

You don't have to update the firmware!! You just need a Gen2 or later Spektrum transmitter to be able to access the forward programming like I show in the video!! Is yours a RTF then?

@@IansRCExploits that it is! First one. Am good with hand eye coordination so thought I could pick it up quick. But when the helicopter starts to run away from you it’s kind of hard. My first day yesterday I didn’t crash! Almost lost her twice though lol. Do you have any ideas on how to keep the battery from moving up and burning against the motor? I was thinking a 3m Velcro stick on the battery tray and back of batteries to keep from sliding up.

Yes I always put Velcro on the tray and Lipo😄👍

Hi Ian and Cheryl! Ian i think those Blade Heli's are great machines but personally i really can't understand why they're so expensive compared to other brands mate!? What's your personal opinion on the prices mate ? It's the one and only reason I've never bought a Blade Heli unfortunately mate. I have bought Horizon Hobby Planes, who ( i think ? ) are the owners of the Blade Heli brand, but never the Heli's. Thanks Ian and Cheryl! Wes, Liverpool UK.

Ian, did you contact Horizon Hobby tech support, for help? I’d like to get a 330S for my next Heli too. Thanks for this video; I’ll keep an eye on that setting for sure, when I buy it. I currently fly two 150S Helis, with a Spektrum ix12. The second Heli keeps me flying, when I crash the first, LOL. Both helis flew great, straight out of the box, but Stunt 1 and Stunt 2 are quite the challenge. That bird can get pretty crazy, when you take it out of stability mode, LOL. I’ve had questions about various settings on my 150S, in an attempt to tame the thing down a bit. Responses from Horizon Hobby tech support were disappointing at best. Their support staff appears to be unequipped to answer questions regarding specific settings. I like to understand every setting in every menu and sub-menu. In my opinion, if there’s a settings options, its meant to be used for something. Horizon Hobby tech support appeared unable to answer anything, not printed in the very inadequate supplied manual. Perhaps staffing isn’t up to par because of Covid-19. One Tech Support individual suggested I should fly the 150S, as factory set, for safety reasons. Another suggested I search RC forums and KZfaq channels for answers. Guys like you Ian, are a huge asset to those of us who’ve been away from the hobby for a while (30 years in my case). I’m retired now and have a lot of time and decided to get back into it. Wow have things ever changed! Your videos are one of my many resources, Ian. Thank you so much.

Wolfgang it is very easy to tame the 150s in flight mode 1 and 2 just copy the throttle and pitch curves from normal mode!! So flight mode 1 will be the same as normal mode but without the stability!! Yes I contacted Horizon Hobby and the Heli was sent back to a company to have the Gyro assessed!! They said the Gyro was ok and then charged me for the parts to rebuild the Heli Lol somebody else messaged me who was having the same issues with his 330s changed the attitude settings and he said it transformed his Heli, there is a real issue with this Heli as I have been messaged by a lot of people all experiencing the same drift issues that normally results in a crash!! The problem with all these Blade Helie's is that apart from normal mode they are set up for 3D the easiest way to tame the 150s down in Fm1 or Fm2 is to change the throttle curve so instead of having 70 70 70 70 70 you could change to 0 65 65 65 65 what this would do is lower the head speed you could also change the pitch curves from 0 25 50 75 100 to 25 37 50 75 90 by doing this you won't be getting the fierce 3D pitch of the rotor blades so Heli should be a bit easier to handle, a 3D capable Heli would have a blade pitch of -12 to +12 so by raising the first number and lowering the last number of the pitch curve you would reduce the blade pitch to about -10 to +10 this is exactly what I have done to my 230s V2 and 330s as I never intend to fly 3D, I hope this helps Wolfgang and thank you for your positive comments and for watching 👍😄

Oh and of course Wolfgang I should have mentioned dual rates and Expo!! You can change these to so you could have low 50% medium 70% and high 80% so by staying low you will reduce the throw of your cyclic servos which would also help to tame the Heli down!! I always set a bit of + expo as well about 20% just to soften the input of the cyclic controls around centre stick!! I apologise if I am telling you what you already know but I know all these settings never really get explained, when I first started flying Helicopters I watched this video and did what the guy said and it completely transformed my Heli and how I was able to fly!! I had been struggling as a new pilot with all the settings but after doing what thus guy said, it was like someone had waved a magic wand👍😄 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nK50pMSar8u9eYU.html

Thanks Ian. I flew RC planes and Helis in the 80’s, at which point family and career took priority. I owned 2 nitro helis at the time; a Hirobo Shuttle, and a Kalt Baron. Both were OS28 powered. Crashes used to cost me an arm and a leg LOL. These new Blade Helis, are far less expensive to run. I got back into the hobby just last June (2020). It turned out to be an excellent COVID isolation activity. With all the new rules I opted for the sub 250gram sized birds for now, and fly at local parks. Thanks for all your input. I’ve done many of these things already and am flying fairly confidentially now. I was just starting to do loops, flips and rolls, when our Canadian winter, grounded me. I’ll be back at it in the April/May timeframe. In the meantime it’s research and Heli maintenance.time. Do you know if anyone has ever published a manual that would give detailed explanations of what exactly all the program settings do to a helicopter. I’m specifically interested in the S series Blade helis. I’m a very technical guy, worked in electrical/electronics and IT my whole career, and like to know the effect every setting has. Thanks again, keep up the good work, for us old guys.

Aww sorry Wolfgang, sometimes when answering comments it's difficult to work out someone's experience levels I didn't mean to teach you how to suck eggs as they say😖 I don't really know of any books on the Blade Helie's but I do watch Freddy can Fly on KZfaq!! He seems to make a lot of sense to me, what sort of things are you trying to find out? Now I know you have had a lot of experience I'll be asking you questions 👍😂🤣

@@IansRCExploits No worries, Ian. More information is always better. Here's the list of settings, on my 150S, I'm trying to get more information and better understanding of: Forward Programming - Swashplate - Agility. Factory set to 100. Forward Programming - Setup - Swashplate - Sub Trim. Channel 1 set to -77; Channel 2 set to 65; Channel 3 set to 330. I think I understand the purpose of this but what are the units of the values? Degrees of servo throw perhaps? Forward Programming - Setup - Swashplate - E-Ring. Factory set to 100. Forward Programming - Setup - Swashplate - Phasing. Factory set to 0. If you've played around with and tested any of these settings Ian, I'd be very interested in your findings. I suppose I could make adjustments and observe the results, on my 150S, but I suspect that some of the settings may not be immediately obvious. I found downloading and reading manuals of other S series Blade Helis is sometimes helpful. There are differences in the manuals. One of the best KZfaq resources I've found to date is a fellow that runs a channel called CoeShow619. He reviews numerous Blade Helis in detail and is an outstanding pilot. Another quick question: after you got your 330S flying properly, how does it compare to the 150S or 230S? My only recent experience is with an Eachine E119 (fixed pitch) and my 150S. I find when flying on my Simulator (RealFlight9.5), the larger Helis seem to be easier to fly. Thanks again; I sincerely appreciate all your feedback.
