It wasn't a crane. It was a unicorn, just like the one in Deckard's dreams. Gaff left it there to let Deckard know that he's aware of his dreams, causing both Deckard and us, the audience to question whether Deckard himself might be a replicant with implanted memories. That's more or less the point of the film. You're supposed come away with the question "If you think and feel, if you fear and love, if you can hurt and bleed, what's the difference if you're a natural born human or a replicant? What does it really mean to be human?"
@MrVvulf
@MrVvulf Жыл бұрын
Agreed on all points. It's far more thought provoking to leave the Deckard as replicant question unanswered. Director Ridley Scott considered Deckard to be a replicant, but purposefully left things vague enough for continued debate. Syd Mead, who served as the "visual futurist" also believed that Deckard was a replicant. Conversely, both co-authors of the screenplay (David Peoples and Hampton Fancher) considered Deckard to be human. Lastly, in the novel which inspired the movie, "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?", Deckard is 100% human.
@ubit397

@@MrVvulf Well said. Although it seems that many people enjoy arguing in favor of or against Deckard being a replicant, it's ultimately a very tedious and quite futile exercise in "missing the point entirely". The question is more important than the answer. The ambiguity IS the point.
@mikejankowski6321

@@MrVvulf I am firmly of the camp that holds Deckard to be human. He was no match physically for the Nexus 6 replicants, and he was running around loose eating noodles instead of being in storage at the beginning. But the question and the value of the debate is the point. Indeed, if Deckard were just another replicant it would take away from the impact.
@psterud
@psterud Жыл бұрын
@@mikejankowski6321 I think it's pretty cool to just understand Deckard's identity as ambiguous, but it's pretty clear in the film that he's a replicant. The facts that his eyes glow in one scene (which apparently was very tough to accomplish, technically) and that Gaff knows his dreams are evidence enough. And of course we know for sure now from Blade Runner 2049 that he was a replicant.

In the original theatrical release there was a VoiceOver narration by Deckard and I really liked that approach. Gave it a very 40s detective vibe. At the end, we saw them driving off together in the countryside, with Deckard telling us in the narration that Rachel did not have an expiration date. That was a secret Tyrell had told him during his visit. Not even his partner knew, hence his comment about not living. As I commented elsewhere, I say that Deckard was human. Also, as noted by others, the unicorn dream was not in the original release - it was added later to alter the story (just like Greedo shooting at Han!).

The significance of the origami crane in Japan has an ancient backstory, and the paper bird was later popularized after one girl named Sadako Sasaki used it to send a powerful and lasting message. Today, people continue to make and gift origami cranes as symbols of hope and love. Unicorns have long been associated with purity, freedom, gentleness, virginity, innocence, divinity, and magic. The fact that they used to be commonly depicted as captured or tamed also speaks to society’s desire to possess and control the purer elements of life. Perhaps it’s only natural, then, that people love to make origami unicorns.

In his novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? (the inspiration for Blade Runner), Philip K. Dick used the term android (or "andy"), but director Ridley Scott wanted a new term to avoid audience preconceptions. As David Peoples was re-writing the screenplay, he consulted his daughter, who was involved in microbiology and biochemistry, who suggested the term "replicating", the biological process of a cell making a copy of itself. From that, either Peoples or Scott came up with replicant, and it was inserted into Hampton Fancher's screenplay.[1] Prior to the events of the film, replicants became illegal on Earth after a bloody off-world mutiny. Six replicants escaped the off-world colonies, killing 23 people and taking a shuttle to Earth; the film focuses on the pursuit of the replicants by Rick Deckard, a type of fictional police officer/bounty-hunter called a "Blade Runner", who investigates, tests, and executes replicants. Escaped replicants (all Nexus-6 models): Roy Batty (played by Rutger Hauer), a self-sufficient combat model for the colonization defence program Pris Stratton (played by Daryl Hannah), a "basic pleasure model" for military personnel Zhora Salome (played by Joanna Cassidy), "trained for an off-world kick murder squad" Leon Kowalski (played by Brion James), a combat model or loader of nuclear fission materials An unnamed replicant-"Hodge" in early versions of the screenplay-killed in an electrical field at the Tyrell Corporation The sixth replicant was named "Mary" in early versions of the screenplay. The only mention of this replicant occurs in the 2007 "Final Cut" version - Captain Bryant's dialogue has been fixed to say that two replicants were killed by an electric field at the Tyrell Corporation; in previous versions of the film, he states it was only one replicant. Other replicants: Rachael, (played by Sean Young) is a prototype replicant, with implanted memories from Eldon Tyrell's niece. The sequel film further elaborates on this by revealing she was designed as a test run for a replicant that can become pregnant. While Deckard discusses Rachael with Tyrell, Tyrell states that to better control replicants he started to implant false memories to give them the years of experiences that humans take for granted, creating a "cushion or pillow for their emotions." Nexus-6 units were designed to have a four-year lifespan to avoid emotional development, and all attempts to increase a replicant's lifespan have resulted in death. According to Deckard, a normal replicant can usually be discovered using the Voight-Kampff test within 20-30 questions, though Rachael answers over one hundred questions before Deckard determines she is a replicant. The second film further develops Rachael's origin, and gives significantly more details about her radical design. It revealed that she was an experimental model of replicant with a high percentage of human organs, including human reproductive organs, and that Rachael conceived a child with Deckard. As Rachael died during childbirth, her possible survival beyond the four years was undetermined.

It was in his dream._ Remember that the newer models of replicants (like Rachel) have other people's *dreams implanted.* It's seems the guy who *made this origami of a unicorn* & deliberately left it for Rick Deckard to find somehow *knows about the unicorn dream.* That's easy to explain if Deckard is a replicant with implanted memories (& dreams).

Both "Blade Runner" and "Total Recall" are based on Phillip K. Dick's stories, "Do Androids Dream of Electronic Sheep?" and "We Can Remember it For You Wholesale. They are coming from a similar standpoint of the dystopian inevitability of technological progress, specifically the morals and ethics of A.I. I love that both films take divergent tones, serious/moody and satirical/dark humor. Both movies are stylistic masterpieces in their own rights.

The interesting thing about the origami unicorn. In the original theatrical, it was clear that he was saying Rachel was different and there was no telling how long she would live and he, the detective, knew that, and let them go. In the theatrical version, there was no Deckard dream about a unicorn. But because Ridley Scott liked the idea that Deckard himself was a replicant, he added the dream sequence to the directors cut, leaving it for us to interpret that the detective knew Deckard was a replicant, and let him go. The author of the story makes it clear Deckard is a man who is coming to grips with his own humanity, as he starts to see the moral dilemma with killing sentient beings even if they aren’t technically human. Great reaction as always guys. Keep it up!

It's hard to get everything in your head about this movie . This was the Director's Cut . The original movie released in the theater had a voice over by Harrison Ford - because American test audiences were confused . In the original they flew off in a sky-vehicle and were in the sunshine at the end , probably to live normal lives . In the Director's cut the scene was introduced where Deckard sees a unicorn - matching up with the origami unicorn done by the detective , meaning that Deckard was a replicate . But that was only director Ridley Scott's idea . The book it was based on was written by Philip K. Dick . Anyway , this is a film that gets better every time you watch it .

Yes....watch the 2nd Blade Runner...a fantastic sequel over 35 years after the first movie. And WORTH that wait. Amazing film as was the first one. You guys said in your after movie discussion that the slave replicants wouldn't need memories because they only have 4 years life to remember anyway. NO. Tyrell corporation just implanted memories for a full life of an adult. So the replicants, slaves included ( Not just Racheal ) had memories for say 25 or 30 years of such memories, implanted. So they remembered a whole life they had, for however many years were implanted, 20, 30, etc...although their actual existence would be only four years. And you thought slaves would not have implanted memories, no, no, no. They did. Remember Tyrell said the implanted memories gave them a cushion for their emotions which helped people to control them better. Remember Roy said to Leon at the beginning, " Did you get your PRECIOUS PHOTOS? " and Leon said he did not because the police were in his apartment. So, " precious " photos. Leon had photos of his life, memories, just like we have photos throughout life. Tyrell put those photos with Leon when he was created. Leon thought he had memories and experiences from say, 30 years or more of his life. A big lie courtesy of Tyrell corporation.

They showed the photos of the replicants at the beginning. It's harder to recognize them on a small screen. Also, the movie is dark, but many of these "dark" movies from the 70's and 80's were made for cinema screens only, where the brightness and contrast are better. One more thing, the theatrical release is less confusing. It contains narration by Harrison Ford, including a reveal at the end that Rachel has no expiration date.

Something like the photo enchancement device was seen in the "Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex" episode "Interceptors". When I saw it I wondered if it was another homage to "Bladerunner". One of the songs, "Velveteen", may also be using police radio chatter from this movie, I think from the scene where Deckard was hearing about the deaths of Tyrell and Sebastian. It is right at the start of the song.

The darkness and all the constant rain was a bit of a projection of Los Angeles in the future because of the pollution and smog issue with the air quality problems. That's why it was always dark and raining (acid rain) all the time. You can see when they were driving from LA at the end it was sunny and everything appeared normal. The other question is what makes someone human? Is it memories, emotions? The pace is slow because it more focused on non-verbal communication and body language. Love the reaction.

There is another version of this film. In it, we see Deckard and Rachael traveling in a flying car, and Deckard reveals in his narration that he had learned the Rachael had no fixed life span, so they have a life together for as long as she lives, which is all anyone has. That's only one way in which Rachael is very different from the earlier replicants. Scott gives you a lot to think about, but many of enigmatic things, like the unicorns and whether Deckard is a replicant simply do not have any reliable answers. It's up to you to decide. You must see the sequel which contains some answers. Like the source material, the franchise asks what it is to be human, and if you can't answer, does it mean sentient machines should have rights. Or does is mean humans should not. What does the Turing Test mean when it's understood that consciousness is an illusion evolved to add some support to the actual mind, the non-conscious mind that is the only part that learns, and that none of us have ever directly experienced anything. Everything we think we perceive is processed and presented to out conscious by the non-conscious. We only think we made the decisions to act. You can show this in the lab where the EEG shows that the subjects response was initiated before the subject was consciously aware of the stimulus.

I just got a reference; remember from the Bible Judas…😢😮the kiss of death? Roy kisses Tyrell before he kills him. Roy putting the nail through his hand is a reference to Jesus on the cross. Obviously the dove represents Roy’s soul. There’s 7 versions of this film: the first version Ford narrates it and Rick and Rachael ride off into the countryside

"You've done a MAN's job, Decker." I would say the sequel is not that important. All the key issues are raised in this first movie. But if you like the world and want to stay in it a while longer, that's pretty much what the 2nd movie is for.

This movie, and Total Recall, were taken from novels by Phillip K. Dick is one of the best of the "New Wave of Sci Fi" writers. These writers are also the beginning of cyberpunk type of stories. Most of the stories involve a "dystopian" future wete corporations run everything and the government is corrupt, in Blade Runner, for example, the buildings are 1 or 2 miles high and how high you live depends on your socioeconomic status. In the middle, pollution has created an inversion layer which is perpetually cloudy and so on the ground level it is always night and rainy, but on the upper floors, it's always sunny and clear. A theme in all of Dick`s stories is questioning reality and people questioning what it means to be human.

"there were no villains....." I can't agree....Tyrell and Sebastian were creating people to live as slaves and, in an extreme example, Sebastian created people who lived in his apartment, whose lives had no meaning except to amuse him. That's truly evil. No wonder the replicants revolted against a life of slavery.

Do a KZfaq search for Gary Numan's awesome song "Time To Die". It's an ode to the finale of this movie, featuring lyrics like "it's all lost to me now, like tears in the rain". Numan was a huge fan of this film and referenced it in multiple songs of that era.

How did Deckard know about Rachael’s memories about playing doctor and the spider outside her window? He read her file. He knows which memory implants she has. How did Gaff know about Deckard’s unicorn dream? He read his file. He knows which memory implants he has. You’ll like the sequel.

How could the origami man know about the unicorn in the blade runner's dream? :) He knows because that memory was implanted in the blade runner's mind, because the blade runner is a replication. He will not live long either. Buit then again, who does? We are all replicates in a way :) Compared to those elites who control us, and set us against each other.

Great reactions. Again. Because I'm evil, I'd like to point out to all the people saying that Deckard couldn't be a replicant because his strength was no match for the other replicants, that he COULD have been built that way. Maybe that was a safety feature since he'd be working among humans, just in case he went rogue. LOL.. I don't actually care if that's true or not since the question remaining unanswered makes for a better story.
