I just rebuilt/replaced bearings in a spindle on my grasshopper mower. Gotta love it when there is a grease fitting on a spindle with two sealed bearings!

Just grease it. Itl get in there The seal is one way grease in but not out

I think the seal is designed to keep things in as well as things out. There is no way grease can get in , in this design!

I’m sure you could make a bearing install “tool” with a bolt, nut and washer. Just tighten the bolt til the washer pulls the bearing in.

Pull inner seals out add a grease fitting and you get triple the life by greasing it on regular basis

Great video maybe you can help me. Replacing the spindle bearings on my Gravely ZT 48HD model 991082 serial # 020430 zero turn mower. Gravely says the spindles are not repairable. I have the spindle apart but having a hard time finding the bearings. Part number on the bearings says Peer PHR205-16SP unable to find that bearing. I have even talked to Peer and they do not carry this bearing. I'm talking with a guy at Motion Inds and he is trying to find something that will work. It has a 1" bore and a flange on one side that sits down on the crush sleeve. Any idea where I can find this bearing or something that will work? I appreciate any help you can provide. I tried Power House where I bought the mower and was only told I had to buy the hole spindle for $218.00 dollars, Thanks!!

MM1 if the spindles you replaced bearings in had grease fittings, would you have removed seals from one side of the bearings or just leave seals in and not grease spindles? Thanks for this!

Couple things I have always done: remove the grease fitting and clean it, before reassembly start greasing the wheel bearing to confirm the grease fitting works. I also anti-seize the sleeve.

Anti seize is abrasive on a microscopic level and is a terrible lubricant. The copper and nickel compounds would wear out bearings like liquid sandpaper in very short order

I was watching TV and eating dinner when I added the comment... I meant to type "anti-sieze the spindle bolt/nut.. but I make sure the grease fitting is flowing grease to the inside of the spindle housing." Thanks

99% of these bearings are sealed anymore so doesn't do any good to grease the spindle

My bearings sleeve sticks out farther than on your bearings and they're that way for the middle sleeve you called crush sleeve mines lips are okay i checked those after tapping the bearings out

Jeremy, I was wondering if you could teach me an easy way to find TDC on compression stroke without pulling the engine apart. The reason I ask is because I would like to troubleshoot with my leak down tester without spending much time, to come up with a diagnosis. I'm sure there are a few tricks to this that I just don't know. Thanks Bob

Sure I can do that, gimme a few days to make a vid. Meanwhile the easiest way is to put your finger over the spark plug hole and pull the engine through till you feel your finger "pop" off the hole, next get a dowel rod and place through the hole snd rest it on top of the piston. Slowly turn the engine over until the dowel stops moving upward

Thanks for the tip. I learn a lot from you and your channel. Anyhow, I had this snowblower that was showing low compression about 60. I was trying to figure out if the problem with the exhaust valve or the intake. I didn't feel like taking off the carb and opening the valve cover (it was a tecumseh flathead). Anyhow, I hooked up my leak down tester (@ 10 psi) and was pulling over the engine to feel when there was major resistance on the pull start, but I couldn't quite tell if I was at TDC because I had the leak down tester plugged in the spark plug hole. I wasn't sure if there was a compression release either. Turned out the exhaust valve did not have clearance. By the way you don't have to make a video on it, I completely understand what you are saying. Thanks for the offer. Bob

Great video, but those bearings went into the housing way to easy. Maybe a little Loctite 291 the permanent on the outer part of the bearing. This way you will not get spin a bearing

I've taken brand new factory spindles apart. The bearings just slip in by hand. If you glue them in they might be a little tough to remove later on

Green loctite is made specifically for that to maintain or create a solid foundation for the bearing. Only issue is you must use heat to disassemble it later.

How do you get the lower bearing off the MTD/Craftsman style spindle shaft? Shaft comes out with bearing tightly pressed on. Not sure if it's a tapered shaft.

@Marty's 4x4 Sometimes they do sometimes they don't. If the outer race has less tension holding it to the housing than the inner race tension does to the shaft, the lower bearing will pull out with the shaft. I've taken apart a number of these and the lower bearings never seem to just slip all the way down the spindle by hand. Not sure if it's a manufacturing tolerance defect or intentional that the lower one presses on tightly. I noticed that some of the spindle shafts have machine textured area specifically where the lower bearings ride. They have to be pounded in or tightened in with an impact at the top nut. Anyhow, I solved my own problem to pull the bearings by cutting a notch in an old bent mower blade so that it slides under the inner race and I can pound out the shaft. Just make sure the inner race is supported by the tool.

When you install these bearings{ Sealed bearings} does this mean you do not grease them anymore ,because the grease can not get into the bearing.

Just grease them. The grease will push past the seal without damage. Il make a vid

If your spindles have grease fitting you should remove the inner seal of both bearings so later when you grease them the grease will go into the bearing !!

Seal or no seal the grease will go in. The seal keeps grease in. The grease will go right past that single lip seal no prob

Do you know if its possible to rebuild the spindle on an ariens ikon x 52? I'm having a hard time finding anything on it. One spindle runs 70 to 100 dollars.

It takes a 2 pin spanner socket to remove the collar on the bottom under the blade then it comes apart
