I left the channel awhile ago after voicing my misgivings about the hosts and how the content of the channel had developed, so I was skeptical when this link popped up in my feed... but I am glad I clicked on it! This is what BHQ used to be and the duo Spencer & George works - not the same as Ben & Zac, but they don't need to be. 2 Knife nerds talking about knives - as it should be. Aside from that - great comparison of camping knives, very helpful as I need a new one soon. Very good quality footage of the knives as well. Keep it up please!

you def forgot the Terävä Jääkäripuukko its by far the sturdiest and best woodsman knive I know. it's a true puko knife in traditional Finnish fashion. and it's made for the rough Scandinavian outdoors! all the old Scandinavian woodmen swear by the puko knives and the Terävä Jääkäripuukko is definitely the budget friendliest knife that will never ever let u down. like look at some destruction test vids on yt. and the glock 81 field knife deserves an honorable mention inmho, lived in the Norwegian woods for two months only cooking over fire ant that knife was my only way of processing firewood and it did great!

I have the 8.5 cm and the 14 cm and they are very good...I would swap a falkniven for a Terava jakari puuko any time The F1 is a full tang, but exposed one...I guess that by minus 20 you would loose the skin of your palms grabing one. The jakaari puuko is full tang but it is a,l inside the rubberish material of the handle.... the leather sheath is nice and good; the "plastic" sheath is of a special material that was developped to withstand more extreme temperatures much better then kidex. The false edge on the F1 is a no no for me...perhaps it is good on the intended purpose of escaping from a downed plane aluminium cockpit...not for survivalists or bushcrafters! The 8.5 cm terava jaakari puuko is a gem for the ladies that, with smaller hands, might struggle to control normal size blades (specially if a begginner) When going out into the woods I love the small 8.5 cm puuko, combined with a pocket folder for food, a silky saw and a taīga triangular small "machete" (18 cm) ...its a bliss of a combo!!! ...and, by the way: the Terava puukos is much cheaper then the F1!!! (one third of the price?)

honorable mentions id like to throw in, the Cold Steel SRK is a good budget friendly jack of all trades knife for camp\survival, the Finn Wolf from Cold Steel as well is surprisingly light and gets you a scandi grind on a budget folder, and any of the Ontario SP line will get you big hard use high carbon fixed blades you dont feel bad beating on for their price points.
@1341usmc
@1341usmc Жыл бұрын
I took my SRK on a camping trip earlier this year. I baton’d a bunch of wood with it and it did great. The only potential downside I noticed was that that handle seems to hold onto dirt and holds a smell. Not a big deal when it smelled like a campfire for a couple weeks after we got back, but something to think about.
@weirdmusicmixmaster
@weirdmusicmixmaster Жыл бұрын
@@1341usmc havnt noticed a smell yet but the texturing can definitely hold some grime, i beat the hell of mine 3 or 4 camping trips in a row now and other then the coating stripping off a good bit and the edge needing a resharpen, the only real issue i noticed was the rubbers a little worn on the top where the spine meets the handle.

My Army Recon friend got custom better molded scales for the KA-BAR and loves it. It's served him great on the field and in deployments as a meaty hammer of a knife. The problem he had with it though was the sheath that came with it. It didn't last long before losing kydex retention and the nylon strap for it was cumbersome so I made a custom sheath for it. Would recommend with some upgrades.

I've got a Mora Basic and a Gerber Principal in my camp knife rotation, and i totally agree on the comparison. The 420 HC on the Principle doesn't have the best edge retention for working with wood, but with the ease of sharpening, I don't have any problem with it.

I’ve been a collector for 20 years and enjoy all of my knives. I have over 300 and somewhere near 200 fixed blades …lost count. This is a decent representation of good camping knives and you really can’t go wrong with any of these. If you’re open to the mid to higher end, and you want quality for life with the best warrantees, I’d recommend Bark River, White River, and Esee.

I'm new to outdoor knives but I picked up a couple I really like (expensive gifts to myself). 1. Bark River Scandi Gunny- work horse of small to medium sized Bushcrafters. I tested it and it chops, batons, and feathersticks quite well. 2. Woox Rock 62. An Absolute BEAST. I haven't tested it yet. I'm looking forward to it. I got it in a Walnut smooth handle, but I made a paracord hand adjustable lanyard so it's not going anywhere. That's my 2 cents. Great job on the vid fellas 👍

And I still enjoy carrying the BK-2 more! (It's just that the Operator 7 does just a tad better when I need to baton because of it's longer thicker blade.) very interesting. I used to think of camp knives as big things with 10" blades. never knew what you did with them, but thought that was what "camp knife "meant. Myself i always just wore a regular hunting knfe on my belt and brought a kitchen knife for food prep. That said i would note that a machete is a very useful thing. clear brush, cut firewood,whatever you need to do. I'd prefer a Swede saw or folding pruning saw for firewood but a machete works well.

Bradford 5.5 in elmax or 3v (Can’t believe its not on the table) The Bradford 3 clipped to a pack strap is simply unbeatable for quick small tasks. The 1095 blades are perfect for survival because they’re easy to sharpen and very tough, but they dull quickly, not great for a couple nights camping. Of those, I’d take the M4, I guess.

I did buy the BK2, opened the box, took out the knife, felt the weight, put it back in the box. I did see a video of the BK2 break inside the handle since the 'full' tang is skeletonized. From all the knives on the table I only have the Mora 511 and the Ontario RAT1. That Fallkniven F1X also comes in non laminated Elmax steel. I chose the R2 Scout model in Elmax. A brand that gained popularity with their BS-9 line of camp knives designed by J. Sabater is 'Joker knives'. These Spanish knives are very well made and many options to choose from. They also have a Nessmuk model (basically a short European design butcher knife) and a traditional looking Finnish Puukko in 3 lengths. These are mid price knives that can compete with high end knives. Talking about high end knives I would suggest TRC knives from Lithuania. Very popular here in Europe A lifetime no questions asked warranty doesn't mean the knife is good but they already calculated the replacements in the price. Such a warranty is nice when playing soldier around the house but useless in the jungle since they can't send your replacement to the jungle. The bigger issue is knife loss anyway so to me the sheath is important. Since most of the tasks for a small camp knife is food prep I prefer the Mora 546 (stainless version) in some bright color to prevent loss. Just my 2 cents but a nice video.

Most have never let me down. It's fun to try something new each year. Its funny what you can find for $10.00. The TOPS B.O.B. always gets the spotlight, but the Dragonfly (Dfly) 4.5 is a MUCH better knife in my opinion. Lighter, thinner blade, more comfortable handles, and better blade shape. Sadly, it almost always gets overlooked. Backpacking knives? That White River is just the best. Remove the firesteel loop and it turns into a super thin package that can go anywhere. Also the TOPS Bull Trout, ESEE PR4, and the LT Wright Switchback are worth a look as well.

This is NOT a camping knife per se, but I just got my fifth Benchmade, the Bailout. With it's partially serrated tanto blade of CPM M4 Steel and OD Green aluminum handles, it is one badass blade. It opens and closes like butter. The M4 tanto blade is the perfect thickness to feel like a razor in the hand. It's like three knives in one. You have the serrations for heavy duty cutting, the mid-blade for slicing, and the front end for precision cuts, and all are razor sharp. The CPM M4 blade ensures it will STAY sharp! I have bought 2 Bugouts, 1 Claymore, 1 $400 Infidel, a Piranha, and even a $500 custom made McNees Agent. Nothing comes close to my Bailout. Rather than wait a year for Benchmade to restock, then wait a couple more months for laser etching, I ordered from Blade HQ. I ordered it on Tuesday. Even with laser etching, I got it the following Monday. Less than ONE WEEK! YOU GUYS ROCK!!!

My go to camp knife for the last several years has been the Esse 6. I have literally batoned through hundreds of pieces of oak with that knife and then turned around and made feather sticks with it and even after all that it will still shave hair off of my arm. I just picked up the white river 3.5 as a companion or back up for the Esee 6.

I've got the JG-3 and the newer ergonomic 4, I love both knives and would never sell them. Almost forgot, I've got a Jolly Roger 5 as well, it's a BEAST of a knife! The 6 is calling my name loudly. It's about my max length for comfortable belt carry, anything bigger and it feels like I have to pull it into my arm pit to clear the sheath - I'm 5'-10".

@Crusty_ Otter I started off with the Esee 3 for edc and then the Izula 2. The 6 is perfect for just about any task. It’s tough as nails, stays sharp, and it’s big enough to baton through bigger pieces of firewood. You will NOT be disappointed with the 6. I have several more expensive and much nicer camp knives but I just always gravitate towards the 6 because it can handle everything in one knife. At one time I was considering getting the junglas until I actually picked one up and thought “ok, this is just ridiculous”. I don’t need a camp sword. Hahaha.
