Imagine suddenly realizing that everything you remember isn't what you lived through. You have no idea which memories are yours and which aren't. Where do the fake memories end, and where it's really your life?
Scary for sure. And one of the most intense scenes I know.

@@Canonfudder You might be speaking a rational, logical kind of sense, but in the moment that's obviously not how the scene is meant to be taken by the viewer, or experienced by either character. Deckard obviously feels regretful of breaking it to her how he did.

I was about 6 or 7 years old when I entered the living room at night and my grandfather was watching this very scene. He was smoking and the whole room was filled with a cloud of smoke which blended with the movie itself. Then I was hipnotized by the atmosphere of this scene. I had no idea about the movie but I was mesmerized by it. When Rachel left the scene with this superb soundtrack my grandfather told me to go to sleep. I went to my bed thinking about this movie and only in my 20's in a sleepless night I turned on the TV and I instantly recognized the movie. Alongside 2001, Blade Runner is my favorite movie of all times.

Johannes Grützmann Good story and good dialogue. I remember when I was 7 or 8 watching Jaws for the first time on STV and falling asleep halfway through. It was so scary that at young age, I could remember every scene and dialogue and Jaws is now one of my favourite movies of all time.

I know a lot of people say that they think Blade Runner lacks 'an amount of emotional logic', but after re-watching it over and over for years, this is one of the key scenes that genuinely gets me quite teary-eyed. Sean Young was consistently fantastic throughout and it's a real shame that we don't see her do many films anymore - she was perfect in this scene, and I genuinely felt extremely sad for Rachel. Vangelis' masterful music perfectly accompanied this too, helping to carry a lot of the emotion in the scenes that wanted it.

Hollywood execs royally screwed over Sean Young. And her image. she was young, and as such did no more than what actors do when they're young. same goes for athletes. but during that time they singled her out in the worst kinda way, knowing people simply follow whatever hearsay is out there. so they lambasted her with all sorts of negativity, little if any of it being true. I feel so sorry for the woman, because she truly was as talented as she was beautiful. and at that time very VERY young. i think during the filming she was only 18. And of course, every scumbag studio exec wanted to exploit her. resulting in her being blacklisted. She loved hollywood but the place is chock full of sleazy ruthless people. Blade Runner owes so much of its success to her and her performance. Thankfully she has seen work on and off screen thru the years, something is better than nothing. but its a hard thing to once be in such bright lights only to late have those memories. Hollywood is all hopes and broken promises. Thankfully theirs youtube.

You don't understand this movie until you are 40 and have memories of your own that are....real....yet so vague that you can't remember anything before or after them. Did you implant them yourself? Or did you actually live them? That's why family is so important; the collective memory of a family and close friends can refresh your recall of what really happened and ground those memories in reality. As humans, we don't do memory verification, so family and friends is as close to an analog checksum as we can get.
@MrReasonabubble
@MrReasonabubble 7 жыл бұрын
grumblekin, and yet there's also evidence to suggest that recalling and discussing your memories also reshapes them. It's thought that when we recall a memory, it's not as though we're taking a temporary copy from a permanent backup - we're taking the actual memory itself out of storage, manipulating it and then storing it again by overwriting the original. If two people's recollection of an event is different, then while talking about it they tend to reach a consensus. The next time they discuss it they will remember it the same way - but while that seems to validate the memory, the truth is that now both of their memories may well be wrong. Fascinating and slightly bewildering stuff!

Age does make memory a bit more mysterious. I remember things as I think they happened, but what if there is no real way to be sure I've still got it right - or if I ever had it right. What about things involving only myself or me and one other person who I'm not around anymore....? Things that cannot be proved or disproved.... I'm not sure which weirds me out more: forgetting things that were a part of my life or remembering things from my life in error. What if what I think happened, didn't...? I doubt we worry much about 'fake' memories, but it's not hard to sympathize with Rachel when she does. Which eventually ends with the 'all these moments will be lost in time' idea as well, of course.

Tyrell had lied to Rachel about her origins, and led her to believe she was a born human. As Tyrell said, "Just an experiment, nothing more." Deckard was immediately intensely attracted to her. So later, she catches him unaware in the elevator. Deckard tells her the truth, and in a way that she realizes that it has to be the truth. Deckard could have continued the lie, but because he was falling for her, he had to tell her the brutal truth. I realize when he went to get her the drink, he had intended to console her. But she left utterly devastated.

'ahead of its time' is correctly applied to ground breaking technology. But its wrong to say a good film was 'ahead of its time' because all the films that came after it were shit. Saying a film was 'behind its time' is a more correct compliment. In the past, people had shit-tier lives often involving death and poverty of family and friends; such hardship created tougher people, some of whom would become involved in cinema. People these days are soft, have little hardship, and so can't produce scences of what hardship does to human behaviour

I think the thing was that he was speaking to her like she was a robot rather than a person. Deckard's likely never encountered a replicant as advanced as her and up to this point, out of necessarily, sees them as things father then people despite looking similar. So, he thinks it's Tyrell overstepping his mark and sending his hot toaster out to keep tabs on him and treats her as such and is shocked and horrified when she manifest's genuine emotion. That moment his tact abruptly changes, and he immediately tries to backtrack, but the damage was already done and for the first time in his life, his opinion on replicant's status in the world is challenged. Worth mentioning, Deckard had never encountered a Nexus Six before being "drafted", so has entered this investigation with all his old bias's that just don't work. It's why they constantly surprise him, he's a great detective but he's ill prepared for what they present to him. Which might be why Blade Runners in the new Movies are likely all Replicants, the only way to directly match one in the field is to have a better model.

Shaun Tiller if Deckard isn't a replicant then the scene is meaningless. the world has a view of Replicants as nasty and cruel but they forget that they themselves made the replicants that way. it shows that through Leon's shock at Zhoras death (and if Deckard is indeed a replicant his remorse and empathy) and Roy's pain at his practitioner family dying and pretending everything will be okay as time is running out and the humans want them dead out of fear shows that the Replicants are indeed "more human than human"

The spider in the story represents the Mother/the City in the movie and the people living in the city are the 100 babies. The streets are overcrowded and they have destroyed the earth just as the babies ate the mother. The "play doctor" part is representative of Incest relationship which Deck is developing with Rachel. They share the same parents (Tyrell & Earth/City). On top of this Rachel crys when she realises she is not human... Truth itself is questioned. Movie is so complex & Beautiful.

This scene and the one that follows it, where Pris meets JF are my favorite parts of the film. Core themes, character and futuristic atmosphere all being convincingly established. I think the effect of the photo of Rachel and her mother 'coming to life' is meant to reinforce the idea that the memory the photo captures was a real moment in someone's life, possibly of Tyrell's neice, but it does not belong to Rachel. The voiceover from the theatrical release version contains some lines suggestive of this.

I recently read the short story "Red Wind" by Raymond Chandler; and as soon as I did so I was reminded of this scene. This scene does not resemble its counterpart in the novel, and I suspect it was inspired by the Chandler story. The mysterious femme fatale ambushing the detective at the elevator outside his apartment. Her refusal to believe the truth of what he is telling her. Her leaving the apartment all upset. Her coming back again later. Even her clothing here seems to resemble the character in "Red Wind". Don't know if anyone else has ever brought this up.

Can anyone explain the purpose or significance of what appears to be moving shadows within the photograph when Dekard examine's it after Rachel's departure? Is it just to provide a sense of 'other worldlyness'?

Cool question. I've always noticed that and wondered a little about it. Seems like it makes what's in the picture a little more real, for a second or two anyway, and then it goes away - a bit like the struggle with the implanted memories themselves. But I've never heard any commentary on that....

The cool thing about this movie wasn't the special effects (which was good by the way) but the emotion I felt in this movie was real.... I mean, I felt sorry for the replicants.

I think the reason why Deckard is like an asshole in this scene was most likely because he is tired with his job that he was forced from retirement for. He obviously doesn’t enjoy his job, and you can see it in his eyes. He wants to tell her the truth because he is falling for her. In fact, for the rest of the film, most of his dialogue with her is apologetic, or romantic.
