@gary clark not everyone knows how to cut. I know people that will cut your grass, and you won't have to worry about it the rest of the season. Cause it will be right down to the dirt..

@gary clark yeah kids can do it but they normally don't make a business out of it lol. When you're cutting 8 yard a day, on top of that you have properties that you do mulch jobs, deweed the whole property. Also land grading. A lot more to Landscaping then just mowing

Completely agree w you on maximizing sales w existing customers. That’s what we try to do. We take on new jobs all the time, but limit them, as to not overwhelm ourselves. Being the lawn supervisor/pesticide applicator, I’m on peoples property more than anyone in the company. Lawn crews are on properties more than anyone in general. We’ve been teaching the guys to look for more work at our existing properties. Great advice man!!!

Good idea. I get a lot of extra work just by chatting with customers and the topic of tree trimming etc will come up. A lot of people don't think about things like getting the eaves cleaned, but are open to having them done. Aeration is something I notice people ask about on repeat for the next year, so one aeration sale can turn into a recurring addition to cleanup.

I really like your comments about taking your time and switching things up a little bit to have some variety. We wouldn't want a surgeon to rush on our surgeries to get out and go golfing or get to the next surgery. "Time is money" mantra only works to a certain point for the quality of one's life. If we can't do things mindfully and with joy, I believe we should not do them at all.

Every customer deserves the same good job you did the first time you serviced their property. Don't get relaxed. I've taken on at least 6 new properties this spring because the current service provider isn't doing the job they were doing in the beginning of their services. Stay on point. Another thing is when hiring more guys is you have to make certain you hire people that know what their doing. I've had guys that couldn't string a trimmer, cutting too low, pouring the wrong fuel in, and filling on the lawn. Alot just think its about going out and just cutting. Is your equipment running correctly, are you blades sharp, is the deck level?? Think about your work, take your time with your work, be respectful to the client and explain things to them. You should never have a problem. I've had most of my same clients for years. And they pay more without me even asking.

Residential customer turn-offs: Heavy commercial equipment on a residential lawn & not reclosing the gates before you leave. The main reason I bought my own equipment and started taking care of my own lawn was because the guys, who strictly did residential lawns, continued to buy bigger and heavier mowers which were tearing up the yard and wearing tires grooves in the yard. Secondly, I got tired of coming home only to find the gates open and having to chase down our dogs after dark, not realizing the gates had been left wide open.

That's why I'm scared to hire anyone for my lawncare business, you start picking up yards to cover their pay and the next thing you know they quit. Now you're stuck with 20+ yards on top of what you did solo before you hired anyone.

I think you do a great job and i've learned a lot from watching your videos, you've helped me step up my standards of service. I do want to give you one small piece of criticism in regards to your reasoning for not growing. Good employees are everywhere, just like kids they only know what you teach them; its your job to maintain standards instead of cutting grass... the job dynamic just changes if you want to grow.. it's not harder or easier it's just quite literally a different job. Customer service become your job as the owner once you've outgrown what you yourself can manage... the thing is that it's not a business unless it can operate without you. Do you own a business or are YOU the business?

I’m now working on getting a brand new commercial mower. I’m only working with a Toro 30 inch time Master for now. Which mower do you recommend I start off with? I am looking to buy either a 36” or 48” mower. I have been thinking about only offering weekly services. I do ask my clients from time to time what they think. Just simple common sense. Take care of the customers you already have, lest you stretch your self so thin you end up taking care of no one. The only other realistic option is to expand, but that only brings its own headaches and there’s a loss of control as you can’t be there with your crews. There are few things worse than having to put out customer fires having only second hand information. You also give the impression of no longer being there: “He always came himself to take care of us, but now he sends a crew of strangers. Maybe it’s time to get a new lawn man.” And then you have to get new customers to fill the void and it becomes a vicious circle.

I mow some yards. I do not work on yards less than 64". I like the 3.5" to 4" cutting height. I do not like yards full of trash and beer bottles. I would rather do more work with a min excavator.

Hey there bud... why don’t you try coming back right along the lines of the concrete back porch then really lay down some nice stripes? Your lines are pretty wavy there... those are awesome movers! I run a 36” exmark ... I’m a straight stripper fanatic...😂😂😂😂👍

Great tip BOGLC, I have a question; my local Gravely Dealer has a Gravely Pro Stance 36 with only 12 hours on it. Do you think that good deal for $5000.00? I don't know what year it is, but my local dealer did send me a few pictures of it, and it looks like it is in great condition.

That seems like a great deal! If that dealer is in North Texas and you don’t want it, let me know!

Considering I just priced a new 32" pro stance at $7400, that's a steal with only 12 hrs

Same here in North Carolina. I'm thinking it's to keep people from putting boat trailers, utility trailers, cars or anything of the like. Could be wrong but all my small gated yards are in HOA neighborhoods and HOA is basically government for houses
Are you thinking of starting a Lawn Care Business?
