In Part 10 Of the Project I blank off the EGR Valve at the cooler and the valve.
With the engine fitted in the Land Rover it is a little awkward as its right at the back of the engine, with the engine one the stand it is a very easy job so i would be a fool not to do it.
There is many benefits doing this job and is a must to improve performance and driveability.
Thank you to everyone who is subscribing and commenting.

DISCLAIMER. After running my engine for nearly 2 years now every once in a while the engine management light comes on referring to the air mas ( maf) sensor pick up too fast. This is due to the blanking of the EGR making the engine pick up faster. There is no actual fault and is due to the ecu been programmed to circulate exhaust gasses. The only way to cure this is either a remap or turn off the EGR Valve.

Great videos Tom . I really enjoy watching and learning more about my 2.4 TDCI Defender . I heard about you from watching Nigel who is also brilliant to watch . I had my EGR turned off years ago but was never advised to fit blanking plates as well . After watching this video , I will definitely look into doing it . Could be very awkward but I will persist . Keep up the good work ! Cheers , John

Hi John thats great. We are all learning from each other. Yes i would fit the blanking plates as its certain gas cannot enter the inlet system. It also stops the cooler getting clogged with sut. Over time the build up of sut may force the egr open so will start to recirculate exhaust gasses again. The link for the kit is in the description. Its not expensive just abit awkward to fit. However in your case i would deffinately check inside the cooler to see what the condition is like, if its clogged remove, clean it and put it back on and fit the blanking kit before tightening it back up.

I've seen enough of these vids now to realise that it's a cleanout job every 50,000kms. I've also seen that early EGR systems were just horrible 'quick fixes' and should be blocked off or rather bypassed. But later ones are in fact well designed and should just be cleaned. Early being, circa 2000-2006

@@markevans5596 The ones with holes in are a waste of time. They dont completely blank the EGR but also on a motorway run your engine management light will still come on due to it been restricted flow from the EGR. So they are pretty pointless. If you blank it completely like mine your management light will only come on when you are on the motorway and say EGR restricted flow. If you have a little code reader you could easily clear it off until you manage to sort a remap. Hope this helps

Yeah they can be a real pain to do! Alot of time involved cleaning them out too! The MOT manual is a big contradictory mess. Everything is a visual inpection so if a tester suspects the EGR has been blanked they can only pass and advise as they cant prove it. The only thing they can fail it on is excessive smoke. I was a MOT tester in my old job and you wouldnt believe some of the things you cannot fail a vehicle for but only put down as an advisary marked dangerous. Hope your enjoying the channel Eric. Damn...it's so much easier with the motor out! Thanx for the nice step by step explanation....I have 2 questions.... how many miles does this engine have on it(I'd like to get an idea of how long it takes for that amount of soot to build up inside the inlet manifold)...and why did you decide to blank off before AND after the EGR cooler......Pre cooler is always 1st prize and post cooler if you really can't get in there and dont feel like taking the whole engine out...☺
@lifes.projects
@lifes.projects 4 жыл бұрын
The engine has 79000 miles on it. If you dont drive the engine hard or tow it will be more clogged up then this one. Its better to blank off at the manifold so the cooler dosent get clogged up full of sut. It also helps with exhaust flow and cooler life as there is less pressure inside the cooler. I blanked off after because there is no way exhaust gas can get in to the manifold but also when on boost there is no way intake air can get into the cooler. You can do it with the engine fitter its just a little awkward. Its was easier to show/film doing it whike the engine was on the stand too. Hope this helps

A mechanic told me that the cooler is faulty ( broken internally) as there shouldn't be any coolant leaking. I decided to blank it off but would you recommend that I take off the 2 water hoses and join them together with some pipe and clamps or just leave water hoses on the cooler even though the water side is leaking internally, just thought it might be better to join the water hoses because if I leave them connected to the cooler it might pick up all the soot etc when its flowing through all the cooler, Any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Hi Tom, an interesting problem the engine has developed is the boost stops after a few miles…after a bit of driving and the turbo loudly doing its stuff the engine goes into a state where it wont accelerate beyond 2800rpm or 50mph. No engine light comes on. Switching the ignition off and on resets everything until it all happens again. Cant see any splits in the boost hoses but hard to detect as the turbo wont cooperate unless I’ve got a load on the engine. EGR valve makes the self cleaning noise ok. Ive replaced the maf and boost sensors already…any ideas? 😬
@lifes.projects
@lifes.projects 9 ай бұрын
Sounds like your engine is going i to limp mode (restricted performance) split boost pipes will cause black smoke from the exhaust and you will be able to hear a whooshing noise. Also check the intercooler as they crack on the corners. Ideally you could do with having the ecu scanned to see if there is any fault codes.

@@lifes.projects Thanks Tom, now that you’ve mentioned checking the corners of the intercooler, I did notice some oily muck around the near side of that. Blanking the EGR has an effect on the gases as you said, will this affect the reading when mot'd. Can it fail am mot if the EGR is blanked off?
@lifes.projects
@lifes.projects 3 жыл бұрын
In effect no. The MOT is Visual inspection only and you cannot tell just by looking if the EGR is Blanked off, Also the emmissions test on a Diesel engine is just a smoke test so as long as its not making huge black clouds when revved its a stright pass. The only thing a tester can fail an EGR is if it has been completely removed.

@lifes.projects
@lifes.projects 4 жыл бұрын
Sorry i didnt know you had messaged about this. It cannot fail an MOT test. The MOT is a visual check. There is no way a tester can see or prove the egr is blanked off. If the tester suspects its blanked off they can only put it down as an advisory. It wont show up on the emissions either because it only measures the smoke output.

Yes its a slightly different kit for a 2.2. Also if your 2.2 has a DPF on the exhaust it complicates things slightly. Some countrys dont have DPFs fitted to the exhaust but In England the 2.2s have a DPF filter on the exhaust that by law can't be removed..... 😜😜😜...... but due to this you would have the Get the ECU Remapped otherwise you will get the engine warning fault on the dash. If its not law in your country the best thing you can do is Blank the EGR Valve , remove the DPF, get it remapped and your engine will run smoother, more efficiently and cleaner. I hope this makes sense as its a little hard to explain on a 2.2 🤣

@lifes.projects
@lifes.projects 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheDuke279 The reason its more complicated is because the 2.2 is designed to be better on emissions than the 2.4. Therefore the EGR valve will be working more often with the DPF to lower the emissions so if you blank the EGR off the ECU will register this as a fault and put the warning on the dash as it thinks there is a fault, not only this but it will not allow the DPF to carry out regenerations etc. This is why you will have to get it remapped to tell the ECU there is no fault.

@@vs6300 can be both yes. The main is overfueling and either melting or cracking pistons. Poor oil due to the egr causes problems too. Injector seals leaking and causing poor oil dilution. Have a look in my other video and you will see the state of the oil caused by a faulty injector seal

Hi Tom. My name is Jarich and I’m from Belgium. I have a Deffie 90 from 2010 with only 36000 miles on it and my engine is broken. I thought it was the oil pump, but took it out and saw nothing. Apparently it comes from malfunction of my injectors. At the moment, I took my engine out and will replace it with a new one. I really hesitating to blank my EGR because I’m afraid that it will cause damage to my new engine, I mean, I heart that the recycled gasses helps to cool down you engine ass well ? Also, what about the emission? Will they see it ones they controlled my emission in my end exhaust? Is there risk you think? Just to more questions, can you delete the egr with a nanocom blakbox? You’re a great guy Tom, I really enjoy to watch your videos! Sorry for my broken English 😅

Hi Jarich. The TDCI engines do suffer with injector problems that cause damage. If you are fitting a new engine and injectors i would also replace the VCV (fuel metering valve) fuel pressure sensor and fuel pressure relief valve as these are prone to failing and can lead to incorrect dosing of the injectors. As for blanking the EGR it causes no damage to your engine, it actually makes it more efficient and cleaner in the long run as its not recycling the carbon caused from burning fuel. In our country the egr valve has to be there to pass a MOT test and you cannot tell it has been blanked. The emissions it just a smoke test so will pass no problem even wih the egr blanked off. I dont have nonocom myself so i am not sure about that. If i was to replace my engine I would blank the egr for sure as it just chokes up the inlet and causes problems. Hope this helps 👍

@@lifes.projects Hi Tom, can I ask you one more question? As I blocked the egr, I was wondering if it can cause any damage to my turbo? So, now with my blocked egr , the exhaust gasses will go straight to the catalytic converter, but I’m scared that because of these extra gasses, my turbo will suffer from to much pressure. I can empty the calatytic by cut it open but like to ask you first😅! Thanks a lot for helping me out☺️

@@jarichneckebroek150 Hi Jarich. No dont worry it will not damage anything if anything it helps as the turbo spins up faster due to it having a little more pressure perfectly healthy for it.

Alot of companies just use the little one that you have but personally its better blanked the the manifold as you will get carbon built up in your egr cooler

Hi Tom, great video's mate. I have a 130 Defender in Australia and its got a cracked head or head gasket gone. Its in for a new motor as I type. I got the blanking plates shipped over and am getting them fitted. I have sent you a message on Instagram if you could please respond, I couldn't find other way to send you a personal message. Also what do you do to delete the coolant going through the EGR cooler. I am thinking of blanking the hoses and stopping the coolant from taking the route altogether. Thanks heaps

Hi Damian Sorry I will Have a look at my messages on Instagram. You can buy a little pipe to join the too EGR pipes together . Dont clamp them off as coolant wont be able to circulate.

This one doesn't have a DPF so it doesn't regen. However on this engine its still better to blank the EGR to stop it reusing exhaust gasses

I really don't get the logic behind all this modern emmissions shit?? It's like DI on petrol engines.. awesome when new, but after 30000 miles the valves and ports are so clogged up with recirculated oil vapour, not being cleaned by fuel/air mix that the engine becomes less efficient than a nomal port injected engine?? It must be the same with the EGR on these diesel engines, great when new, shite after a few miles and less efficient than running without it. Think I'll check my manifold tomorrow. I've got 16K miles from new and plenty of that was long journeys so I might be OK?
@lifes.projects
@lifes.projects 4 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the delay Nigel. It didnt tell me anyone commented! No idea why! Well modern petrol engines also have an EGR Valve but because petrol enginess dont produce as much soot as diesels they arnt as commont for clogging up. (They do still go wrong tho 😂) Yes you are correct, the entire reason behind egrs, dpfs etc is only for emissions and being kind to the envoronment. But it hits the consumer (Us been the consumer) by shortening engine life and also causing expensive repairs that can be avoided. With yours been the 2.2 there is a few extra things you need to do. The egr needs blanking but as well as telling the ecu that the egr valve is no longer recirculating exhaust gasses you will also need to to calibrate the ecu so that it will no longer require the egr valve to help with dpf regenerations. Most defender tuning specialists can sort this for you but just making you aware that its abit more complicated with the 2.2 due to it having a dpf
