Using one of these older Dell's to build a gaming PC might surprise you. You can check out the entire build process where I turn one of this into a gaming PC that beats out a console for the same money. Also, I've made an updated video talking about the current prices. Check it out for some alternatives to an xx20 with an i5, since they're selling for absurd prices currently, as of (Aug. 2020). @@Ivory805 If you're not going to add a dedicated graphics card you will need a VGA or DisplayPort cable. There are adapters that will go from VGA to DVI or DisplayPort to HDMI, which would be my recommendation. If you're going to add a dedicated GPU, most have HDMI and DisplayPorts. Lower end cards still have DVI. However, I'm not seeing any that have VGA on them anymore.

I’m a new subscriber. I just saw the title of the video, and I knew I had to watch. I haven’t purchased a PC in over 15 years. I just purchased a Dell Optiplex 780 minus of the power cord and the HDD for $20. I added an old legal copy of Windows 7 Pro, a 240gb SDD, added 8 more gd of DDRAM up from 4gb to a total of 12gb and now I’m upgrading the current dual CPU to 2 Quad Q9650 3.0 Intel Core GHz 12M 1333MHz 4-Core Processor for $23. The MOBO also have four slots for ram. It surprisingly has a fast boot up speed. I due plan to build a really sweet rig but this old Dell is just for fun and for general surfing and school even though I have a few laptops. This is my learning PC because I’m study for a COMPTIA A+ cert and other skill sets. I also upgraded my video card to a none exciting 2gb Radeon RX550 too. Overall I’m happy but I realize this is not a gaming rig but it can do emulation of course. Once I workout a few bugs this old Dell will be gtg and even better!

@@TheGameBench This relates to the comment I just left about the 7010 being still a desirable box over any that are limited to 16Gs of ram. Please go into the 7010 towers (not SFF of course) details, and let us know if this is just not up to the 7020 in too many other ways. My investment into new PSUs and GPUs is worth it to me if I can move them to other Dells as I see a deal on a better new used Optiplex.

Got a 9020 with an I5-4590 with 4GB and a 2TB Drive for $130 shipped. Upgraded the Ram to 16GB with some sticks I had and plan to run some distributive computing and possibly some low end GPU gaming with a 1050Ti. The only issue I had is that the fans run way too slow. I took a simple six channel NZXT fan controller I had lying around and put it in the 5 1/4" bay. Wired the fans so that the RPM could still be read on the MB. Now I have full control on the case and CPU fan. These Haswell chips are great. I would suggest applying new thermal compound for the CPU. Mine was dried up and brittle.

Hello! Thank you for providing this incredibly informative video. Last night I won a bid on eBay for an Optiplex 7020 for approximately $108 including shipping. The machine does not have neither an HDD or caddy in its case, nor a power cable, and I did not want to begin regretting the purchase at that point. Personally I did not want to interpret these missing components as serious issues, as the machine-according to the seller-had been tested beforehand, and is in virtually mint condition. As for the seller, they are reputable and the auction or purchase is supported with buyer protection. Fortunately I have a spare power cable laying around, but I had been searching on eBay for Optiplex 7010 HDD caddies since this one is missing, although I do hope that I can find a cheap one. The machine is equipped with a proprietary 3.30GHz Intel Core i5-4590 and 8GBs of RAM. It has no dedicated graphics card, and the machine instead uses its integrated graphical hardware. I just wanted to ask you, though, whether or not you personally thought that this purchase at its price point was worth it at all, and whether you thought that any further maintenance would be necessary before operating this machine.
@TheGameBench
@TheGameBench 4 жыл бұрын
I've spent as much as $120 on these with a HDD and 8GB of RAM with i5's. I would say you didn't get a bad deal. Adding a HDD is cheap. You could find a 1 to 2TB drive for $20 to $30. I also highly suggest adding a 250GB SSD for about $30 as it really will make it feel like a newer computer. As for the HDD tray, I remove the HDD cage so I can put whatever GPU I want in these, but you can find the trays for pretty cheap on eBay. Also, if you want to add more RAM, another 8GB is about $15. I think it's totally worth it. If you're gaming, you can toss a dedicated card in there and with all these upgrades, have spent under $300 for a decent gaming computer. You can run up to a 1060 off the factory power supply with a SATA to PCIe adapter. I feel like that's wroth it and to get a similar system with new parts, you'd be looking at a Ryzen 3 1200 and the cheapest it would come in, is almost $600.

A few reasons to also consider an optiplex 9010 is because it has a 24 pin motherboard connector insted of an 8 pin one. I know you can get adapters, but this stuff adds up. If you are going to upgrade it to an i7(third gen) , it is a good amount cheaper than an i7 for the 9020, which won't perform much better for the price. The power supply doesn't matter because anyone who is going to upgrade will be getting a new one. The sata ports getting in the way of the Gpu is no big deal because you can get right angle connectors. I'm sorry for being rude earlier. I'm just saying that you shouldn't necessarily just avoid the 9010.
@TheGameBench
@TheGameBench 4 жыл бұрын
No worries, and those are fair points, but I should say that the 7010/9010 are worth it if you can get them at a better price than a 7020/9020 with an i7, so 3770 vs 4770/4790. Yes, the difference is rather marginal, but when they're about the same price, why not go with the xx20 and save some hassle. I would totally consider a 9010 for the right price... around $170 as you can get around the SATA ports USB port with adapters, but that's going to cost you more than the 8-pin to 24-pin converter. I will say that I am looking for a 7020/9020 with a 3770 to do a video to talk about this, where I'm going to point all this out. I still would flat out avoid Ivy Bridge i5's however.

I just want to give a big THANK YOU for this series. This was my first time building a PC. My job gave me an old 3020 with a i5-4590. Mostly everything was easy to install except the GPU. I bought the MSI Radeon RX 570 8 GB after I read a comment on the comments, which led me to remove the HD bracket. This couldn't have been possible without your help. I went a step up, looking for workstations and ended up with a Dell T3610 w/ xeon 1620 v2, K5000 & 685W PSU and HP Z420 w/ 1650 v2, RX480 & 600W PSU. These were bought for around 225/ea shipped after tax but I was able to sell the K5000 and RX480 cards that came with them, to get each computer about 100$ cheaper net. The Xeons shred and there is no concern about powering a real gaming card from the workstation builds. Each system has cables available for ~15$ to get proper 8+8 power, plus the dirt cheap ECC ram is an upgrade path. The HPs even have a chance of coming with a stock watercooler on the CPU, ram cooling fan+shroud, etc. These game very comparably to a modern build using an R5 2600 w/ matching GPU but for a little more than cost of the newer processor. If youre patient with your purchasing, you can find an RTX 2060 for ~250 or less on ebay and get a workstation for ~150-200. If youre timing is great, the workstation may have a Quadro card installed to sell to lower the cost further. Either way, youll be gaming very nicely for console money.

I recently bought a Dell OptiPlex 7020 SFF PC from eBay for approximately $200.00, and it initially came with the following specs listed below. CPU: Intel Core i7-4790 Quad-Core Processor at 3.60 GHz RAM: 8GB DDR3-1600 HDD/SSD: 500GB 7200RPM hard drive GPU: Intel HD Graphics 4600 OS: Windows 10 Pro (64-bit) I later spent some additional money on upgrades. First, I upgraded the RAM to 16GB, with future plans to further upgrade the RAM to a maximum of 32GB. I also salvaged a 1TB solid state hybrid drive from one of my older non-functional systems, but then I bought a 1TB solid state drive, and with my trusty SATA to USB 3.0 adapter, I cloned my Windows 10 partition from my hybrid drive to my new SSD. The last thing I upgraded was the graphics card, and the particular card that I chose was the ZOTAC GeForce GT 730 Zone Edition with 4GB DDR3 VRAM, as it's the most affordable 4GB graphics card that I could find. With the upgrades in place, my Dell OptiPlex 7020 performs very well with general tasks (Web browsing, watching videos, listening to music) and resource-intensive tasks (video editing, photo editing, animation). As for gaming, I'm more likely to play older PC games from the 1990's via DOSBox and ScummVM.

So going to Thrift Stores has really paid off for me this last week. I got that SAME Dell Optiplex 9020 shown in his video at a thrift store for $20, even took a pic of the price tag before removing it. Came with, -16gb of ddr3 -i7 4770 -dvd rw drive No type of Hard drive but I didn't care. Next I went on offerup and found a nice 600w EVGA PSU for $30 And I couldn't believe this one. On offerup too, a Radeon RX 580 8GB for $90 + shipping The 580 made me go drill off the HDD bay to make it actually fit inside. Now I have this sweet budget gaming pc for less than $130 The hunt is long but worth it in the end no less.

Not to mention it has the i7-4790 in it. Which finding these machines with that processor are quite expensive. I've picked up an RX 570 4GB for 60 bucks also off eBay and I plan to use it with this Optiplex. overall I've probably payed around $110-$120 bucks for this machine including parts I've got for it and I couldn't be happier.

a bit late, but since i just recently bought a 7020 without ever knowing this video existed. i got mine off of a auction, well 2 from a auction since i payed a bit much for 1 of them, this came with 1 keyboard, 1 mouse and 2 screens. without a HDD or SSD, it costed me 56$, i already had a old pc with LGA 775 so this was a well needed upgrade, the i5 4590 is a decent powerhouse, but i decided to spend 114$ on a used i7 4790, could have gone for a K for a bit more, but got stuck with this thing since i bid a bit high. Anyways, i was using a 1650 OC around 2000mhz core clock on my old pc which was bottlenecking my cpu, Even now this 1650 bottle necks my cpu on forza horizon 4 max everything. but either way i run max on any game i play with 0 fps drops. TLDR dont bother replacing your PSU, just get a 1650 with the money you would save on buying a PSU, its cheaper in the long end and 1080p is all you would be able to play anyways

Still seems like a decent deal. $170 for a 7020 with a 4790. Best I've gotten those for is about $200. Toss in a 2TB HDD and and 16GB of RAM and you'd be at about that price. Also, I've found that the PSU can even run a GTX 1060.

I'm not sure if you covered it because that was a lot of info, but if you're replacing the PSU on the 7020 and 9020, they have proprietary connectors for power instead of 20/24 pin power. You'll need an adapter to make another PSU work. I recently transferred a 7010 over to a flashy RGB case. The video card restriction is REAL. Kind of limited to a 470 mini ITX and a 1060 Zotac Mini for cheap options. I loved this video and this was extremely detailed for anybody looking for a foolproof guide. Great content. God dammit man! Here in Indonesia, with i5/i7 3rd Gen, it can go way up to $250 or even $350 due to the processor branding, while the companion components (HDD, PSU, etc) is still working but very trash & low level shit! I wish I can buy these things with that kind of price over there! Because of that, i finally took lower level by catching used G41 LGA775 Motherboard , Core 2 Quad Q9400, 2x4GB DDR3, a 120GB SSD + 1TB used HDD, 450 Watt 80+ PSU, Armageddon Infineon 1000 Case, and used Radeon R7 240 GPU for backup computer & little "casual" gaming rig. Are you talking about adding an SFX PSU in place of the propietary PSU in the SSF units? I had planned to mess with this by mounting it on the side of the chassis as I didn't think it would fit in the case. However, unless you're cutting out the side panel, any LP GPU isn't going to have a problem running off the stock PSU.

That's a pretty decent deal! If you look at time stamp (5:28) you'll see this small 8-pin connector that's low enough to interfere with the GPU. That is power for the SATA to go to all of your drives. Since you're planning on replacing the power supply, you won't need that cable since the power supply will have it's own SATA power cables. Keep in mind that you will need a converter to go from the 24-pin on the power supply and the 8-pin main power on the mother board. Here's a link to the converter than I've been using and it's worked great: amzn.to/2mnxrlk My next video will actually be about removing the HDD cage. That's the first thing I do when I get one of these things in and it's pretty easy to do. At that point there wouldn't be a lot of GPU's that you wouldn't be able to fit.

@@TheGameBench "A 1050 Ti won't fit in the 9020" Sure it will, the low profile gtx 1050ti will work just fine in the 4x pcie slot, with about 8% frame loss as compared to the 16x slot. However, if someone was so inclined as to go that route the 9010 sff is the better option although its third gen instead of 4th gen. That i7 3770 is still a great processor though. There is an anual surplus sale where I live and I buy a bunch every year, just picked up 16 9020's 3 with the 4790 the rest with the 4770. @@AlltMedia Yep, I'm aware that the x4 slot in the 9020 is slotted to take x8 and x16 cards. However, that's not a compromise I see any sense in making. Especially with the 1650 and 1650 Ti LP coming soon. And yeah, the 3770 is marginally slower than the Haswell i7's, but in these SFF systems, for gaming it's an irrelevant margin. Granted, I would have gotten into this in the video, but there just wasn't time. However, I have plans to go in depth on the Dell and HP SFF systems in a future video.

They'll let you use all the ports while also having a long GPU card. In the case of the 1660 it only covers two of the ports so the other two can just use normal cables.

I put a single fan gtx 1060 6gb in the first one and it went so easy I decided cut out the dardrive bays and relocate and add a pcie extension to fit a vertical mounted Rx 580 8gb haha even cut a lil window in side door to see the fans haha all in all if I had it to do over again I’d did both with 1060’s just so much quieter and cooler and un noticeable performance difference , I got em both 1080p 144hz monitors good peripherals and a couple vr headsets all in all it was cheaper to get the whole kit and caboodle for both of em than it was building my personal pc . used hardware is definitely the answer if it’s just a pc for gaming that could also do some editing and rendering if needed , but if you are making money with your pc are us it professionally just go high end nvidia and intel and you will be happy and have no problems I know the amd CPU’s are catching up but as a rule you don’t buy second best for working when it’s a small savings on overall cost. It cost as much for the memory as it cost to have the cpu and gpu for a workstation, for a gaming only pc on a budget you’d have to be crazy to be purchasing the latest greatest generation any high end desktop the last 8 years with a decent gpu will work fine .

Those sound pretty awesome. Love hearing about what other people do with these. I just bought a 9010 with a 3770 to do a video on getting around the crap I was complaining about, which I feel is worth it when you can get them for as cheap as about $160. For the AMD vs. Intel debate, it all depends really. I have a system with an i5 8600K and my server has an R5 3600. The 3600 is slightly faster in single core and will destroy the 8600K in multicore. The 2950X in my editing rig destroys Intel's HEDT CPU's for what I use it for and I can be encoding and play games at over 144 FPS and not skip a beat. There are also a lot of benchmarks showing Intel and AMD trading blows in gaming. It's not cut and dry which one is faster anymore. JMO.

I feel like 16 gigs of ram is a bit overkill compared to the gt 730. If you're gaming, consider investing more money into the GPU.

I would agree. I would allocate more money to the GPU. You're going to have problems with that GPU long before 8GB of RAM. Especially at the settings you'd have to play at with the GT 730.

I was able to score a 9020 i7 tower with 16gb dual channel ddr3 1600 with a newer solid state drive. $170 out the door. Newer 500 watt Power supply and dell compatible 24 pin adaptor cost me $40 with amazon prime. Have a 560ti and gt 1030. Amazed with the performace and what it is capable of. I got mine at a pc parts and repair shopbin Studio City, check ebay, offer up, good will etc. You will find a deal if you're in a large metropolitan area. Just be persistent and patient and watch his video so you know what to look out for.

I have the Dell Optiplex 9020, and I got it for just €85 on eBay. The price to performance is incredible. I average about 80-90 FPS in fortnite on performance mode. It came with an i5 4570, an AMD Radeon HD 8570, 4 GB of RAM and 2x 230 GB SATA SSD. But I do plan to putting an i7 4790k and an RX 6500 XT in it soon. So far I only upgraded the power supply to a 500W with the help from a 24 pin to 8 pin adaptor

Any particular reason you're leaning towards the 6500 XT? Also, 4GB or 8GB model?
@leocorfield
@leocorfield 3 ай бұрын
@TheGameBench because according to PC bottleneck calculator, the RX 6500 XT has a 0% bottleneck with the i7 4790k, which is the best CPU I could put in my PC
@TheGameBench
@TheGameBench 2 ай бұрын
@@leocorfield Well, the first piece of advice I can give you is to never look at those bottleneck calculators. Their information is dubious at best, and is very misleading. They're trying to boil something that's rather complex into a single percentage figure, and it doesn't work. Also, there are videos on KZfaq that show how their figures don't make any sense. It's best to just ignore them. As for the 6500 XT, it's not a good idea to pair one with a 4th Gen CPU, and not because of any bottlenecking concerns. The 6500 XT is problematic in a Gen3 slot due to so many corners being cut. It only has four PCIe lanes, a 64-bit bus and 4GB of memory. So, if assets need to be swapped from the video memory to system memory, you end up with stuttery game play. There is an 8GB model now that helps a lot with these issues, but at it's price, you can buy an RX 6600 and not have any of those issues. People try too hard to avoid CPU bottlenecks and they overthink things, which can cause them to look at things like the bottleneck calculators, and buy a GPU that's just not a good idea. As long as the CPU isn't always at 100%, which can cause stuttering as well, you're simply not getting all of the performance of the GPU. Depending on the game and setting, it not avoidable. In highly optimized games, CPU bottlenecks are a norm. With bottlenecks, you just want to avoid spending too much on a GPU that's going to give the same performance as something cheaper, and this is going to matter with what games you play and at what settings. You might have a heavy bottleneck in one game you play, and next to no bottleneck in another with the same GPU. Anyhow, I wouldn't even consider the 6500 XT. It's a bad value and a bad pairing for the 4th gen CPU. Since you're upgrading to the i7, I would suggest the GTX 1070 or 1080 as being very good pairings at 1080p. Though, I think the RX 6600 is the best deal at around $120 on the used market and isn't a terrible pairing with the 4th Gen i7, while costing about the same as the 1080.

Not an Optiplex, but essentially the same thing. I bought an HP EliteDesk 800 G1 SFF 2 days ago for $150 with shipping. It has an I7 4790, 12GB ram, 500 HDD, and Win10 Pro that needs activated. I'm going to drop in SSD , change out the thermal paste, and drop in something like an Low Profile 1050ti or similar. It will be used as an Home media PC and a retro game emulator, and it will be awesome.

Yep, I have a 600 G1 SFF with a i5 4690. I'm actually planning on a getting an 800 G1 MT to compare it to the OptiPlex. Might even do the same with a Lenovo from the same generation. And for $150, that 800 G1 was an awesome deal.

I've buit in many 790's (I stick with the i7 2600 variants) Using 90 degree angle/ lower profile sata connectors has always allowed me to use longer GPU's . I actually just built 3 as I got an amazing deal on 3 780ti's. Love the content, keep it coming
@TheGameBench
@TheGameBench 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I had thought about that, and I've talked to people that say the right angled connectors don't work, and I think it's just a issue depending on the GPU. I actually picked up a 9010 with a 3770 to do a video about this. I wish I would have elaborated in this video that the 2600 and the 3770 are exceptions to the rule.

OK, my friendly and knowledgeable Guru, I have done all the steps you describe with a couple of exceptions. First of all I have a dell optiplex 9020 i7-4790, 16 mb ram,1tb samsung 860 qvo ssd, 1 wd 2tb hdd, 2 dvd player/recorders (admittedly I can easily live with one), a 140mm additional fan that requires a molex or 3-pin connection. What power supply will run this efficiently. I tried a 450 wt Insignia non-modular but was left with no cpu power, no power for the 8-pin amd xtx 580 and with an additional adapter it would adapt down from 24 pin to an 8 pin for motherboard power. I prefer modular or at least semi modular but cost is a BIG limiting factor.. So I am looking for your recommendation on a power supply. I returned the insignia 450 wt supply. I am dying to get this beast fired up but all of the store experts invariably tell me the wrong power supply. I am counting on you Buddy. Thanks in advance!
@TheGameBench
@TheGameBench 4 жыл бұрын
Good call returning the Insignia, they are very bad units. Typically what I put in these are the Corsair CXm series. A good, fully modular PSU, is going to be fairly spendy, but the CXm is partially modular. New, they're not on the cheap side and most people tend to gravitate to the ThermalTake and EVGA 80+ white units. I don't like them either as they're not very good. Which is why I go with used CXm's for a similar price off eBay. Since you're going with the 580, you'd be good with a 450 watt power supply, but the cost of getting a 550 or 650 might be negligible and will give you room to grow. I would ask, what is the most you're willing to spend?

Hi, I followed your guide and it was helpful. I have a 9020 with a 4770 and a 1070 that worked great! However I started experiencing problems recently. When I shut down the pc, the fans continue to run and i cannot use the power button. I have to unplug the pc and plug it back in to turn it on, and when it turns on it shows the message "Invalid configuration information-please run System Setup Program". I read somewhere that this may be a bios issue, however I flashed the bios and replaced the CMOS battery. I also updated all drivers including IME. Is a common problem that happens with these pc's? I can imagine the power supply adapter may cause some electrical problems, but I have no way of testing if that is the problem. Thanks!
@TheGameBench
@TheGameBench 4 жыл бұрын
I've bought about 20 of these over the last year and I've never seen anything like that. There are a lot of things it could be, but since you've tried updating the BIOS and replaced the CMOS battery, the adapter would be one of my next suspects. I know there are a lot of those adapters that have been problematic. Also, the power supply could have it's own issues.
