You can use bleach to remove the color from dark or colorful clothes. In this video, I will show you how bleaching is an effective way to give your old clothes a new look. The hoodie I used in this video was in pretty bad shape. It was destined to be thrown away. It surprised me how good the final result was. But please consider that it is a poisonous and smelly process if you also wish to try out bleaching. It may cause headaches, and you need to protect your skin and eyes. Even sunglasses are better than nothing, but you should wear safety goggles. If bleach splashes into your eyes, then rinsing your eyes may not be enough. So you should take it seriously.
You need:
1) Bleach (ACE, for example)
2) Rubber gloves
3) Safety glasses
4) Rubber bands
5) A bottle, a jug, or some small container to pour the bleach
6) Bowls for rinsing (in a bathtub if possible)
7) Lots of water
8) Baking soda
9) Washing machine
10) Well ventilated room. Outside or on the balcony would be great.
11) Drying rack.
The process: Make sure that the clothing you are using isn't too valuable, so it wouldn't matter if you ruin it. Start by bundling it up with rubber bands. Prepare the bowls. Then put on the gloves and safety glasses and prepare the bleach solution: the same amount of bleach as water 1:1. Pour it on both sides of the bundle. After that, pour away the excess bleach. In this way, you get a more consistent result. The other possibility is to soak the entire pack inside the bleach solution, but this kind of soft fabric will absorb so much of the solution that the final result will not have as much contrast. Let it steep for 10 minutes, but if you wish it to be lighter, then longer. It is not recommended to let the process go too long, or the fabric may become mushy. When done, put the gloves and glasses on again and remove the rubber bands. Rinse with cold water multiple times. I would also let it soak in the water stirred with baking soda. It should neutralize the smell a little. In the beginning, it will still smell, but hopefully a little less. Then put it into a washing machine. You can use a normal wash cycle. Do not be surprised if it still smells. The smell can linger on after a couple of wash cycles. But it will go away eventually. In the future, I will write an article about it in my blog on my website.
