Bleeding Control: Arterial Bleeding

www.ProFirstAid.com Arterial bleeding is characterized by brighter red blood that may pulsate or spurt. Apply direct pressure with a dressing. If blood leaks through, apply more dressing on top. Never remove a dressing. If there are no bone fractures or spinal cord injuries, elevate the wound above the heart. Once bleeding is under control, use roller gauze to secure the dressing, beginning at the distal end and working towards the heart. You can twist the gauze to apply more pressure. Check to make sure blood is not leaking through, and that the bandage is not having a tourniquet effect. Elevate the wound, and call EMS or take the patient to the nearest hospital. I went through basic military medical training, and they taught us tourniquets are the most important thing. Arterial bleeding will just keep spurting out until the person dies, unless you stop it with tourniquet. The key is to look for spurting blood, not more passive bleeding, such as come from veins.

Yessir that's true my dad ounce hit his artery with a knife but at the time we didnt know so I called 911 we just kinda thought it was a really bad cut ' medics thought it was just muscle bleeding becuase it stopped becuase I put so much pressure on the wound while waiting for the ambulance to come. When they arrived it stopped bleeding from all the pressure I put on it so they didnt think it was a big deal so at the er we was low priority so my dad started bleeding all over the floor I kept asking the stupid nurse it was serouis but she kept just putting more bandages over the fucking wound he could have died. So I kept asking than they finnaly put him in a bed.Than finnaly they checked it out they pulled off like so many bandages it was terrible only thing that stopped the bleeding was when they put the turnakit it made his leg white any ways it was a scary situation he had have a surgery to stop the bleeding from his artery in the leg. It gave me mini ptsd for couple weeks after thankfully I'm good now. I cant imagine what millitary people experience and how bad there ptsd might be god bless

Yup, I second this. Just went through a TCCC/CLS course, and tourniquets are the most effective way to control a massive bleed on an extremity. Obviously, applying direct pressure TO THE ARTERY, NOT THE WOUND IN GENERAL is good to do while you are getting the tourniquet ready. If you can have your patient do this themselves, it will free up your hands. If you can't put a tourniquet on it (armpit, groin, neck, etc.) then you have to use direct pressure to bleed, maintaining pressure for 3-5 min

The military 68w/corpsman training doesn’t translate 100% to paramedic. They are able to do alot of advanced interventions but there is so much that they aren’t taugh which is what is stopping them from just being handed the paramedic cert.

What do you do when the artery is bleedning somwhere around neck area ... I saw once that in NHL happedn this to the golman .. someony cut his neck with the skate ... What kind of help you can give to the person at that point ? and also how is it resolved later in the hospital
@robw4633
@robw4633 8 ай бұрын
You've got to go in and clamp the artery yourself - Preferably with a medical clamping tool; but people who know what they're doing , can do it with their fingers in dire emergency. Ultimately...That's one for the really trained people...Doctors, Paramedics, Nurses; not the first aiders. Unless you've done specific trauma first aid.

Whats the deal with Tourniquets. When I was a Police Explorer they told us to ALWAYS use them on arterial bleeds and mark the time it was applied and that it would give you enough time to get the help needed to stop the bleeding. When I was in Army JROTC in high school they made it sound like as soon as you applied a tourniquet, that limb was as good as dead after a few minutes.
@IncredulousIndividual
@IncredulousIndividual 10 ай бұрын
Your ROTC instructor heard bad knowledge and mindlessly repeated it. Studies have proven that tourniquets can be left on for hours with minimal to no permanent damage. It is a non-starter especially on the civilian side because 99% of the time unless you’re in the middle of nowhere you’re probably no more that 20 minutes from an ER.

@@IncredulousIndividual My medic said they learnt through Afghan, the upper limit for a torniquet is 6 hours. I can't remember what she said after that, but sounds like "guarenteed" limb loss. If you're more than 6 hours away from a hospital, you've got bigger problems.

tourniquets are last resort if bleeding doesnt stop. They say its not safe to use because you can lose limb. you can if tourniquet is too thin, it will rip and shred the skin tissue.tourniquet has be 2 to 3 inches wide.
@user-ve2xp3du6b
@user-ve2xp3du6b 4 жыл бұрын
They can lose a limb if its kept on to long. You can leave it on up to 30 mins but after that you have to untie or unpressurize the kit to let blood in to the tissue 3 mins break than put it on again

I think the only reason people say not to use a tourniquet is simply because if you don't know what your doing you could end up causing much more damage than necessary. Obviously a trained professional cam easily do tha to stop it bleeding but your everyday joe might not be able to :)

"Trained in First Aid, whoopee" Battlefield tested and countless lives saved by tourniquets in Afghanistan/Iraq. Look up the medical studies on soldiers that died in Vietnam alone that were preventable from a simple TQ. A TQ can be in place for several hours and still save the limb. Get your facts straight Sarah!
@fotballdude16
@fotballdude16 10 жыл бұрын
If you have cut your artery, or have another massive bleeding, tourniquets are definitaly the way to go. It's called life of limb, You shouldn't use a tourniquet unless you have too. But if you don't stop the bleeding, the person is most likely going to bleed to death. So if you stop the bleeding, but have to amputate your arm or leg, or whatever, because of the tourniquet, but are still alive, you should shut the fuck up and be happy that someone used a tourniquet on you. This comes from a someone who has had to use it in a real situation.
@rae8323
@rae8323 8 жыл бұрын
+Kipp Ersund Well tourniquets are more like stopping blood flow until it can be fixed at hospital. So I'd say you definitely should be angry if you lose a limb, because in an hour or so after applied tourniquet you should have received sufficient care to restore blood flow to that limb and close off the bleeding wound. Generally you won't lose a limb for at least four hours. So the only way you would lose a limb would be if you live somewhere in the mountains, are really unlucky or your country's medical system sucks ass.
