Great video, it's exactly what I needed to see. I've just pulled the HVAC box out of my 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0L to fix the air doors, and I discovered that the heater core is just starting to leak. I live in a hot country, so I don't actually need it. It's now in the trash, and you've given me the information I need to run the bypass. Thanks guys!

This bypass is exactly what I need to do. Thanks for posting it. I have a 98 GC that the Heater Core has failed and leaked coolant into the rear passenger floor board via the heater outlet there. I live in N Fl so not having heat will only be a minor inconvenience during the mild winters that we typically have. And because my commute to work is only a mile. Thanks for the tip.

If I had only known where to find those fittings here in Barbados, I would go with them too, but I had to make a u-fitting with copper pipe and elbows or 45degree elbows.I need to replace the vacuum valve and I had the hoses connected to heater core direct with out the valve, but it causes the engine to warm up a lot slower so I by-passed the core again and I started getting leaks so I just bought complete new hoses because the van is a 2001 so it needs new hoses.I hope my problem and yours are solved!!!

My 29 year old 1993 heater core just went a few hrs ago. Engine overheated for 4 minutes while stuck at two lights. Turned engine off sitting at each. Antifreeze fog was gushing out of the top defog dash vents. Pulled over. Engine cooled down. Antifeeze dripping on the pavement below the fan/core unit luckily in front of the dash on the engine side of the firewall, not inside the dash. Googled symptoms, then realized it was the heater core. Suspected it was because smoke was in the cab & not the engine compartment. Never replaced one before. Know nothing about them. Called a mechanic and he told me I could bypass it with a U shaped hose. I'm in L.A. County by the beach, so I don't need a heater until December, at the earliest. If ever, as it doesn't get below 38°F here anymore. I'm so, so thankful there's DIY KZfaq videos on replacing the core on my make & model year. And which screws, bolts, hoses, and housings to move out of the way. Plus DIY heater core bypass videos like this one here, online. Need to bypass it because I can't afford a new core right now I didn't expect different sized hoses. More complicated than I thought, but still, simple and brilliant. O'Reilly, AutoZone, & NAPA are within a 2 mile walk of me. I even pulled over in the shade and have until next Monday to move for the street sweeper. I'm doing Vanlife traveling/living in this van, and loving it. Nothing ever breaks on this 1993 Dodge Ram B250. I love fixing automotive stuff, so finally, I have some work to do on the most reliable vehicle I've ever owned - a Dodge. (Tranny was rebuilt in 2016, still pristine). 194,000 on it. Barely any rust - a Tustin, CA van. All new mounts on it, now. Runs so smooth. Need to fill gallon jugs of water, to refill radiator & start my cooled down engine to keep my phone charged. Amost have top of core housing unit off. Might be impossible to get back left screw off of it. May need to remove the whole housing anyway (may have never been removed, and cleaned up before). Cleaned the leaf litter out of the front already. Stuff has dropped back behind it over the years and needs retrieval. Thanks a ton for this video! This is my first bypass job.

Just finished doing the same thing, but with a 90 degree joint on a 2000 Chevy Silverado 2500, very versatile, works great for a temporary fix. I didnt have a compressor at my disposal, so i grabbed a hooka hose that i wasnt using, and pushed it into one end of the heater core, and blew into it and got most of the liquid out of the heater core. Couple things, Why didnt you put the hose clamps over the hose before putting it together so you didnt have to unscrew the hose clamp all the way to put it on? Also, the heater core (just like the rest of the cooling system) is designed to withstand a max of 16psi, so if you are going to use an air compressor to flush out your heater core do not exceed 16psi or you risk blowing the seams of the heater core out. 8 to 10psi is more than enough to flush out a heater core

How true you are. His is bad already so blowing the left over anti freeze out won’t hurt. But if you are cleaning a good one you need to be careful ov how many lbs of pressure you put in it.

Man, thank you for this video! I just changed my thermostat and coolant, and my car overheated on the road. I have since learned that the coolant system needs to be flushed, but I'm still unsure that my car won't overheat again. I believe bypassing the heater core should allow the coolant to operate at a cooler temperature(correct me if i'm wrong please). Your solution is simple and elegant. Being from Florida it's very rare we get so cold I need anything heater related. I'll just buy 2 spare hoses in case I need to resell the car or get rid of it. Thank you for this.

Wow I’m so glad I saw this. They bypassed the heater core in my neon. They didn’t used a u shaped hose. They used a hose and it was pinched. Now I’m wondering what to do about the next step. I hooked the hoses back up and I guess I’d better disconnect them again and use a u hose until I find out why they by passed it it the first place.

Good temporary fix. I watch a video on replacing the heater core in my truck and what I think I would do is run the water hoses under the truck into the back seat and build a box with a heater core and fan in it. Could be done in an afternoon. Let alone tearing the dashboard out just to get to the core. I’ve replaced them in some older trucks and it was pretty easy. Let alone the new models of today. 😩

Also as I read below it IS illegal to disconnect the heater core. All cars are registered in the state of CA must have an operating defroster to keep the windshield fog free in the winter. How will the cops know? It's real easy to tell because someone is constantly wiping the windshield so they can see out. Obviously it's easy to get away with it during warmer weather. Plus many people don't know this fact: in other states they have safety inspections your car must pass before it can be registered. We don't have that here in CA so, the CHP has the authority to pull ANY CAR OVER AT ANY TIME TO DO A SAFETY INSPECTION. But they are generally too busy to do this.
