Later Jeep Grand Wagoneers have a special high efficiency trans cooler: identifiable by rectangle cross-section tubing and hexagon-shaped ends where the hose barbs are. 90s Suburbans and chevy pickups have awesome underhood worklights that have a removable magnetic-based light on a 20+ft reel-out cord. Check glass headlights for clear letters on the front "H4", as that usually means they are upgrade kit headlights (normally $60+ set) that use much brighter removable h4 bulbs. And waterproof wiring connectors from XJ's and 90s chevys.

Another thing to look for if you're so inclined is current license plates. I knew a guy that would come out with a stack of current plates and he'd run on other people's plates for years. (Car flipper) rather than plate them himself.

This is for the hitch comment .................... Most XJ , ZJ , KJ , and some WJ jeeps have a open recall for a factory class 4 hitch .. This is installed to protect the gas tank from a rear end collision ... Contact your local dealer to find out more info , but they are installed for free due to the NTSB Recall ........... They do not install the wiring for the trailer though , so grabbing the factory style plug and play trailer connector would be a good idea .. This way you can actually use your hitch afterward ...

Have personally done the neon injector swap on the 4.0. Can verify that it gives a major improvement to start up time. Fires to life as soon as you touch the key pretty much. Also, throttle response is solid. Have not been able to verify any MPG improvement but that's because i had a bad o2 sensor so I was running rich

Some of the XJs in the late 80s had an under-hood work light that was on a reel with a magnet on it. The wire was long enough to go all the way to the back of the Jeep and stick to the fender if you were changing a tire. I also used it by pulling close enough to friend's vehicle that was broken down so we could see under the hood if you did not have a flash light.

I use to always check for starters, alternator and good radiators. You have to check everything carefully. A vehicle smashed in the back or T boned leaves the engine compartment nice. I think it's a sorry misfortune to many to put new expensive parts on a vehicle only to have someone run into it. Also a good way to find tires. Same thing happens. You won't find a ton of stuff on a single trip. You have to haunt the yard regularly.

You dont need to find a cop xj to have an extended idle button (high idle @ 1000rpm) all 98 to 01 xj us the same harness, just use a relay to send a ground signal to pin A12 (2000 xj with a 4.0L, 2.5L has a different pin out) on the black connector of the pcm that will raise you idle to 1000rpm in park/neutral.

Not dissing the 231,, but I have yet to destroy my 249 with 350hp and a 100 shot from my 318 ZJ. The 46RH is a Martin Saine built trans and chirps on every shift. Have yet to have to open up the 249. I read an article back in the early 2000s that had a spec that stated the 249 had a 800ft pound torque input rating, which is possible because they adapted a version of it to the early SRT8 Grand Cherokee. It wasn’t called the 249, obviously.

EGR Solenoid on a Ford Probe GT is $400. Junk yard, $5. There is also an electronic sensor who's only job is to turn on a light if the EGR isn't within parameters and that's over $100. Thumbs up for the high idle. There is a write up on how to do that and the wiring is already in the 97 and later XJ's IIRC, you just need to hook up a switch for it. All it does is connect one of the wires to ground when switched on, but the ECU is designed to read that input and idle higher. I'm going to do this one day.
