I was a beginner once, with horrible CGI. As a beginner, you always think you'll never become as good as the pros. However, you will, if you work hard at it. I began very badly, with terrible CGI, (you can see my very first Demo Reel on my channel), but I continued to learn and model, and eventually became what I am today. As I like to say, every professional was once a beginner. To all the beginners out there, go find your groove! You don't have to follow trends to be good! Let your ideas and mind soar, and whatever you create will be yours! You can even make a cube jumping on top of a sphere, I don't mind. But whatever you do, you don't have to stick to the trends and do what's popular, just because people expect you to do it. You must enjoy the process of creating, not create for the fact of being popular and trendy, but not receive any happiness from the workflow. I never followed trends or popular ideas. People asked me to, but I always told them one thing, "When everyone does the same thing, everything becomes un-original, bland, and boring. Life is supposed to be full of surprises, not the exact same at all times. When life becomes dull, without change or surprise, it loses its meaning." So buckle up your seatbelt, Jack, and open up your mind, and let your CGI take you places, you've never been before! -Blender Bach - The CGI Guy

at 06:05 when doing the icing, the instructions are to change the thickness from -1 to 1 since the thickness has added inward rather than outward. But when I do that it it was the opposite. I discovered that my duplicated donut top half icing had the normals flipped around. So changing the thickness to positive values was having the opposite effect on the donut thickness. Flipping the normals did the trick.

I ahve gotten to part 5 three times and started again because i keep seeing and understanding things I did wrong earlier on as I progress and im developing a very good understanding of how to apply these tactics and tips to real problems and builds. This is the best tutorial I have ever done by far, and I have done a few of them. I have been looking for that edge and have paid for cgi previously untill I realised I can actually learn myself without the start up costs I was made to believe I needed. AWESOME TUTORIALS!

If your icing edge looks different than his at around the 7:15 mark you may have issues with clipping in the next tutorial. I experimented with the random selection modifier to make the donut more irregular but then at the 7:15 point, instead of having an obvious edge my icing appeared more sunken and this lead to clipping in the next tutorial. Some have suggested applying the subdivision modifier (making sure it's at the top) before editing the icing (in the next tut) and this may give enough vertices to get the icing to snap to the donut (and not clip).

last time I tried this I had zero blender experience, and as good as it was I still got a bit lost towards the very end and I foolishly gave up. I'm now coming at this with blender 3.0, and a few tutorials under my belt that I may have also failed at, BUT I now understand the lingo, the interface and nothing seems too daunting now. I even paused, went back and made changes to my model and resumed and didn't skip a beat. SO very hopeful that this will be the one that sticks. Thanks for doing this

I'm an engineer, working on some designs I have for a business I hope to start. My hand sketches are ok, but not great and I prefer 3D so i can move parts around at will. So I realized I have no choice but to bite the bullet and learn Blender. Eventually I'll do it up on Solidworks and/or Catia, but this is good for a start.

From the perspective of an absolute beginner, I think you need to explain why we need to do further actions after we duplicated the top half of the donut. It took me a couple of minutes, but I've figured it out: The duplicated part still counts as part of the original object, you can confirm this by placing the duplicated part away from the original object, the hit G and you'll see it moves both parts. So it means any modifiers or other stuff we want to do exclusively for the icing, would also apply to the donut itself. Sometimes when we get really good at something, we lose perspective of how things were when we were beginners.

If you cant see the icing. Or if changing the thickness of the icing makes the whole donut go bigger make sure that you are modifying the icing layer thingy on top right.

the hotkey p to separate might just come from partition .. which is basically to separate one thing from another. s was already taken afterall :) it makes sense to use a synonym.. and if that's not really the reason, its a good enough clue to remember it by either way
@antontaylor4530
@antontaylor4530 Жыл бұрын
Your logic is superior, but I beleve it does stand for "sePerate" - lots of programs, when running out of hotkeys, use the first available letter that's not already assigned to some other hotkey. It's a long standing programmer guy thing to assign hotkeys that way. The menu for it says "separate" when it could have said "partition". Your thinking on the matter is more logical than the industry standard in this case!

For people struggling with the solidify modifier (if it's making like a huge thing looking like nothing but the icing of a donut), it may be a scale problem. I had everything at 1 but i messed up with the meters into centimeters converdsion and i ended up with a 1 cm donut (cause i thought 0.01 m was 10 cm, but you know, without really thinking about it) and I think the problem came from that because i didn't have the issue when it was 3m long

At this moment, lots of people want to save different versions of the donut. There is a nice feature in blender to do that. Lets say you want to save a new version of your donut and the old filename is donut.blend. You press: File -> Save As (or Ctrl-Shift-S). Then you press the + next to the name of your file and the filename will automatically jump to donut1.blend. Then the Save As button does the Save.

Hi and thank you for this great tutorial. I'm adding Solidify to my icing, but it's doing to opposite. What I mean is if I'm changing it to 1 the solidify gets inside the mesh (with positive thickness), of course Iif I'm setting negative value in thickness it will go out but that's oppostie. On the other hand if I change the offset to -1 then the solidify frows outwards, again it's opposite. I tries this 10 times and still. Thanks!

When I solidified the separated mesh into the icing, mine was not going "inward", I had a sort of muffintop look immediately. I then scaled it down and it fit just fine, with a nice rounded edge (if you leave smooth shading on the icing instead of switching to flat - why did Andrew do that?). If I change the stack order to put the Solidify above the Subdivision I get the donut with the icing as a thin skim intersecting with the surface of the donut. I don't know why mine is different, or what may befall me if I continue without finding out... arghhh!

@@matija_ne I wish I could remember what I did now. I know I went back and started that step again, and I may have ended up using a -1 instead of a 1in a setting on the right panel. But I can't find it now. I will try to make up for my carelessness in not keeping notes (which I do now when I hit a problem) by warning you about the texture paint lesson. If you have the same defaults in your version as I have, then when you try to paint the light band on the donut, you won't see anything but you will see marks in the texture (UV?) map in the left window, marks near the top and/or bottom, but not along the middle. This is because, if you select the active tool icon in the right panel (the wrench + screwdriver tab near the top), then scroll the rightmost panel down until you see Options, then expand it, you will see that Occlude and Backface Culling are selected. You need to uncheck Backface Culling. Also be aware that there doesn't seem to be an eraser for the paint, if you make an error you need to Undo it. If you close and re-open Blender, or even if you Save, I think, no more Undo's of prior work can be done. Sometimes I think it's worthwhile, for any given lesson, saving separate intermediate versions (08a, 08b, 08c, etc.).

At 6:00 when I change the offset to +1, the vertices are not visible in edit mode anymore. Only when it is negative are the vertices visible for me, but then it is inverted and turning up the Thickness has a weird effect that is hard to describe. It is like expanding underneath itself. It kind of looks like the bottom half of the donut is expanding except it is tilted for some reason. Same problem if I do the "Alt N Flip" solution other people are mentioning. Seems like a bug. Restarting the software doesn't fix it.
