It sucks that Blender just doesn't have an ability to bake Alpha without all these tricks... What's the problem??? I'm angry! But thank you for your video

I was scouring the web trying to figure out the right way to bake opacity maps into a texture atlas for an AR project I'm working on in blender 2.8, and you totally nailed it. Great video, very clear and so many tips I will be using from now on. Thanks a bunch! :D

My way is baked diffuse map and go into photoshop, fill the background with black, and color white the "diffuse mask"

This can by a way, but don't you have any problems with antialiasing?

This is a great video! Just exactly what I've been looking for. Thank you for making this. I'd also appreciate if you taught us how to combine these two textures into one file like you mentioned.

Great explanation! But as a not so experienced Blender-User, I asked myself: What is it for and why should I do this? I lack the explanation of the purpose. ;)

Some Augmented Reality applications need realistic baked content for scenes. Another case is to bake fixed light for a room or terrain for an architectual subject. This is mainly interesting for realtime presentations, if you don't have the GPU power to render realistic light settings in realtime. There are more cases like optimising the amount of renderered materials for example. Rendering less materials is faster for realtime apps and needs less memory. There are much more use cases.

Chris, how did you do that!? At 5:38 you "did something" to make the Select Menu appear. I've never seen that before. I can't tell you how many times I wished there was that feature. So how'd you do that? Oh, and thanks for the tip on tile size too. I missed that feature from earlier Blender versions.
@ChristophWerner
@ChristophWerner 3 жыл бұрын
You have to hold the ALT-key while selecting an object to open the Selection Menu. If there are multiple objects placed at the same position and overlapping each other, you can choose the one you need.

one of many serious design flaws with blender. Some of the most basic things aren't possible. Very frustrating workflow at times.

Great video! Can you make the tutorial mixing the alfa and diffuse map?
@ChristophWerner
@ChristophWerner 2 жыл бұрын
If you're working with Blender materials there's no need to mix them. What is the reason you need this?

@@ChristophWerner, I would like to know that as well. I am working mainly for OpenSim/Secondlife. There you have a diffuse map with included alpha channel (e.g. .png or .tga), a shininess/specular map (also including alpha channel, which does a special work), and a bump/normal map, also with alpha channel, which does a "glow" work. So I am searching for a method to bake all three textures with alpha channel included, to be able to test those OS/SL features in detail and continue with my Blender addon development.

Can I do this for one object I'm trying to bake a texture on to a plane for my texture atlas but I don't want the plane to be shown
@ChristophWerner
@ChristophWerner 3 жыл бұрын
Basically all is possible. I'm not really sure what you're exactly trying to achieve, so I can't give you more feedback without seeing your project in this case. Sorry. I recommend everyone to visit blender.stackexchange.com first. There you'll find answers for nearly all Blender questions and can post your topics in detail, with much more posibilities than on You Tube in a comment box. Thx!

do you have an updated version to bake alpha?

Why? Basically the steps are the same, just some options changed but it still works as described, also in Blender version 4.x. Do you miss something?

I just don't understand really the whole High poly to low poly, since I'm already working with low poly mesh, so I don't have any mesh other than this low poly one.
@ChristophWerner
@ChristophWerner Жыл бұрын
See the "High Poly Mesh" as the source and the low poly mesh as the target for baking. You need always a source mesh to bake from.

Didn't understand the reason of adding Emission shader. Seems makes no difference...
@ChristophWerner
@ChristophWerner 3 жыл бұрын
I do it just to have a clean shader tree and be sure all is baked right. But you're basically right, internally it will be handled like an emission node. So we may don't really need it at this point.
