I finally have a brand new updated car course available, check it out here - cgmasters.com/...
This tutorial is a chapter from my older course, Master Car Creation in Blender. In this chapter we'll be modeling the car tire for a Corvette Stingray and you'll learn about using modifiers for an efficient workflow in building 3D tire models. Download the project files below to get started.

There is a merge option in the array modifier.
@blengine
@blengine 5 жыл бұрын
Yep though this only works when the array modifier is at the end of the modifier stack else you're still left with a seam that's not merged after you bend it around in a circle. Having array at the end of a modifier stack then requires a couple extra steps to still be able to spin it around in a perfect circle. This is the modifier workflow used in the blend file I linked to a couple comments above.

I was trying to find an efficent way to have a simple deform of 360 degrees after subdivision without that annoying seam. I think I menaged to do it once, but I don't remember how. Any suggestion?

for anyone having this problem: at 36:00, when you add in the simple displace and the tire is not in the right direction after you put in an angle, you need to change the axis the simple displace is placed on. It's default is x axis, but changing it to the z axis worked for me. You can change the axis in the simple deform menu under origin

My exact word about this video: 27:50 Even though "awesome", is not enough to say about it. Even if someone is not particularly interested in 3D modeling, there are still other aspects of the video that make it, to say the least, interesting. The way you take things into account before operating, is a proof of what is called - a job done properly. Combined with your knowledge of this wonderful software, the results are truly 27:50. And with such characteristics, a person is really appropriate to be regarded as a - teacher. Thank you very much for this. Cheers!

Hmm, I still can't see it being faster than 15 minutes. The time consuming part is creating the tread shape in the first place. Spinning it around is only a couple clicks of the mouse. That would be great! Game models require trickery like normal maps. Also the thought process of resisting the urge to keep adding geometry. When we started our game, looking back I wish I had not added details people will zip right by never noticing. I am interested in your throught process of being a amazing high quality modeler to thinking this needs to work in a game and I needs lots of them. I have learned you can use one material, vertex paint many model pieces then throw them on the same UV map. A huge performance boost, but I got it figured out a bit late in our project and now looking back might have to redo some things as those textures add up into gigs. Anyway, thank you and I'll keep following and watching.
@blengine
@blengine 6 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah that makes sense. You're up close and personal with a model without realizing no one else is going to be that close or see it from certain angles. That will be a change of pace for me haha, definitely need to do a lot of research to make sure I'm doing things right before I make any complex training. Got any visuals or demos of your game out yet?

Something I thought you might add at the end is how to mash the bottom of the tire with the weight of the car. I find putting a LATTICE modifier down at the bottom part of the tire works really well. As vertices roll through the lattice, they can be distorted out and flattened a bit, and then they return to their resting position as they exit the lattice. It's non-destructive and can be rigged to increase or decrease the effect with your shock absorbers if you're going crazy with animation.

As someone with experience in the tire industry, it's interesting some of the liberties an artist might take in interpreting the aesthetics of a real tire tread pattern without the knowledge of some of the functional tread geometry normal people (who don't work in the industry) don't pay attention to. The wheel bothers me a little bit only because in a model like this, it obviously doesn't need the functional internal geometry a real wheel has to allow for tire installation and structural strength. Also, oops! It looks like once the tread got wrapped around the wheel, something reversed it so the inside and outside sections are on the wrong sides of the wheel. The solid tread rib on this particular tire goes towards the outside edge, as it was when modelling the initial tread segment.
@blengine

Yeah I don't know a single thing about tire or wheel production and design, or cars for that matter. I just enjoy trying to recreate the shapes honestly. -Chris

Funny because every time I model something I tell myself I wish I knew everything about that part, about how it moves, about the real thing behind it. Sometimes I look-up on Wikipedia and Google but the amount of information is insane and often not really useful for rendering it visually. You should check out "wanoco 4D" here on YT, the car he build are insanely detailed and he's rigging everything. He has a completely rigged Mercedes AMG V8 engine.

Hi Chris, Thanks for the awesome tutorial. I see that you are replying very frequently. I was amazed with your way of modelling and working with Blender. I followed this tutorial. But I my tyre tread has gap even I rotated 360°.

Damn. It looks like some of Blender's modifiers have changed quite a bit since this tutorial was made. I think I'm figuring it out, though.

One letter/number at a time basically. I just created a super long image in photoshop, and I looked at what kind of text is written on the side of michelin tires and simply used the text tool in photoshop to add it all in and place it in the right spot. There's no quick way to do it, you just have to write it all in manually.

Modelling this type of thing is easy to visualize in my head because I am working at an audi dealership so I have quite a good idea how this tyre for example is supposed to be fitted on to the rim and how it is supposed to look from different angles
