Once you've got some 4K image sequences on planes, framerates start to drop... To solve this, we can use low resolution proxies in the viewport. "Surrender Lead Ore Smelt Mill" by Altogether Archaeology is licensed under Creative Commons Attribution.

you can just drop the texture resolution in the simplify tab

Hey, you could do that, but in my experience this has no effect on the performance, unfortunately...

Could you please make a video on how exactly to set up the nodes for these fog videos and especially how to create the mask jpeg? I am really interested in these nodes and used them a lot since my PC has a low video card. THANKS.

There is plenty of commercial 2d animation that could be done in Blender instead of After Effects if it was a quicker method built in Blender for dealing with high resolution images.

Yes, there needs to be a "make proxy" feature like in Adobe Premiere. Maybe someone can make an add-on ;-)

You could probably do something in conjunction with Lodify and collection instances so you only have to deal with one image plane, then Lodify will load a mesh with a low res material version in the viewport and the 4K one in render.

@@acoolrocket I will publish a Lodify video soon :-) In fact, you’re right - once you’ve set up the Lodify plane, you can append it and it’ll work as it should, you don’t even need to bother with setting preview/render modes in the Outliner.

I wonder, is there a way to set a proxy to the sky / background texture, if it's a 360 video? Because that would have to be done with world shader nodes (unless you actually add a sphere mesh around the camera to map the texure as a video onto).

Not that I know. The closest thing is that you can replace an HDRI with two separate JPEG's (one for the diffuse color, one for reflections or something) with the Gaffer add-on, that saves some memory.

@@BlenderSecrets I ended up converting the 360 video into a low resolution JPEG sequence, and just manually switching from that to the original when rendering. (having the video as the background made editing and animating very slow, but I had to see the video contents at least roughly)

You can set max texture resolution in preferences so your viewport became light and tight in 1 click , simplify does work in render mode only , viewport is just scam 😅

I tried your suggestion, you can indeed set to max 128 pixel resolution but it doesn't improve performance, in fact it seems to be slightly slower. Too bad ;-)
