From a drummers eye, it kind of looks like hes using it to fill space when hes got nothing to play to keep up with his click track better/he throws his hand back to help him with pattern he is playing. Could also be one of his drum tics. We all have certain things we do subconsciously and that could just be something he does while he plays.

I mean he's a nice drummer but you can try his drum set configuration and you'll notice it's terrible for everything, this guy is limiting his self by putting his kit in a way that he is not confortable at, becuase be honest and tell me how in the hell can you be confortable in that shit.

@eka putra Because he might not know what other configurations feel like or he got used to that and good with that and probably doesn't wanna change it up so it doesn't affect his playing, I made a mistake myself when configurating the kit, I play a left handed kit, I'm right handed, I wish I went back in time and set it up for right handed, but I was too young to know better, and it took me alot to start everything with my weak hand but in the long run made my left as good as my right and so with my foot, mistakes that went so far they almost feel wrong to fix, there's also a reason why nobody sits up that high, it's objectively not as comfortable, ofc he could do whatever he wants, but that doesn't make it a good seat height.

Dom Houghton Yeah thats what I was thinking. Especially with all that double bass i would only image it feeling a little awkward being halfway standing. Cause i know for me if my seat is too high it just feels weird and not as smooth

If I had to guess, he's probably taller than your average dude. Many tall drummers I've seen prefer to raise their thrones more than usual for better leg extension/resting the upper portion of their feet on the pedals for double-bass. There are exceptions, though. Dirk Verbeuren is a tall (6'2" or 6'3" I think) dude but instead of raising the seat, he sits farther back. I think it works for him cause he's lanky in both legs and arms. I'm 6' flat and I tend to do a little throne-lifting and moving it back, personally. That being said, I wanna try lifting the throne more instead when I've got lots of musical downtime. I hope this helped.

Sitting high helps with fast double bass since you don't have to lift your legs as high up. The higher I sit the easier on my thighs double bass is. Could just be a preference for him.

Him and Chris Turner both sit up really high and I think it’s just because they use their hip flexors for double bass and it’s easier when you sit higher

Two things: 1) your drums' positioning should not result in long-term pain or difficulty. 2) the positioning should not prevent you from playing anything and everything that you want or need to play. If either of the above are true, then it is not "proper." If everything works fine, then it IS proper.
