My friend is a mixed (African + Chinese) race person. He is a good looking person. Thanks for your brave decision to marry someone you love. China needs people like you. I am Chinese living abroad. I encourage mixed race couples to be brave. The world will be a better place because of you.

@Abu Fa'iq Chinese is not monolithic - Han, Manchu, Miao, Hui, Uyghur, Kha, and more. It is true that only Kha people who have brown skin. Darker skin is a new phenomenon. It will take sometime to absorb this concept in a society, but at least they don't associate Africans as their former slaves. I think this helps.But, since historically this notion didn't exit before, it could go both ways. ... but this is a wild guess. I cannot be sure. I can only hope, right? However, I know some mixed-race friends (Chinese + European and Chinese + African). But again, they belong to the middle-upper class in the society. So, they are surrounded by more open-minded educated people. Here in the US, emancipation was announced more than 100 years ago, but until now, discrimination is still very thick. ... but we can only hope and we should st art from ourselves and people around us. If 20% of people think this way, then we will be 20% better. My two cents.

Really lovely to listen to your chats, beautiful story. I am a 56 year old British born Chinese living in the UK. I am still not fully accepted in the English community. I have a cousin who is half Spanish and half Chinese living in Spain and he is not completely accepted as Spanish. Life has it frauds but love over comes it all.

As a Chinese I'm truly impressed by Rodah and her husband's courage. Also it's really lucky to have open-minded Chinese parents particularly in small cities. And I'm afraid Tyler might have difficulties fitting in when he goes to primary school. But I believe problems will be solved when the kids and people around him get to know him. Stay safe and happy!

My blue eyed blond Canadian son met his wife when he was in China. I met her Mom & Dad, a divorced upper middle class couple with only one child, their daughter. Joel was teaching Grace, preparing for her ELTS. Long story short they hit it off & her Mom really liked & accepted my son as I did Grace. Seven years were spent in China, 6 as a married couple. Both my grandsons were born in Zhengzhou. They moved here before the oldest started Gr.1I visited often then, always treating with respect & until Covid the kids would go visit their Chinese Gparents for a month every summer & are bilingual. No complaints from either Grandma.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I remembered when I was studying in college, there was once my friends which included black guys and white guys and of course myself comparing how we used to get punished by our parents, the way our parents scolded us, their choice of words and so on are mostly similar. I guess we have more in common than we thought regardless of our race.

It takes loads of courage as a woman going into interracial marriage to a foreign country. The “what if’s” will kick in at some point mentally and cracks the soul from deep within … Rodah is the epitome of such courage to assimilate into the culture and racial divide of her husband friends & families. Beautiful conversation. I related to many of the feelings and challenges Rodah mentioned. My son is automatically considered ¨a foreigner¨ even when he is half-ethnic-minority Chinese... but I've found that as soon as he or us ¨correct¨ the misunderstanding the reaction is amazing. Most of the people (I must say 100%) feels impressed and love the idea of seeing someone like him being also a Chinese. Don't think is ignorance it's just a novelty to some people. I've seen this happening, regardless of the ethnicity, in almost all the cultures around the world. One love! ;)

Spot on! I live in Hk and of course I’ve seen people and friends all over the world. But Rodah lives in a small city so most of the local Chinese have never seen foreigners before, but once they get to know you they’ll embrace your charm and personality

Its difficult to be colored in China, that is the reality in that nation...it is always the children of mix races ( the colored ones) who suffers, fitting in a culture rooted in Confusianism, whom majority are , will become a challenge .

My guess is that Rhodah’s future husband did some groundwork before actually bringing her to meet with his parents. This would like seeking mum and dad’s opinions about a black daughter-in-law. That they had no objection was because they truly loved their son and would respect whatever choice he made. After all it is his life and to hell with what others think as long as the couple are happy with each other. Speaking the language definitely helped. So sweet of the man’s mother to bring along all the old photographs of his childhood to break the ice. On her part she certainly made an effort to be nice and welcoming.

Our half-and-half, mixed race children are wonderful bridges between two worlds, teach him about the great things and people from your backround, so he knows things about himself to be pleased and proud about too, as well as his dad's side. And yes friends and other blended families are a comfort in one's life, and give strength in occasional challenging events. Peace and strength to you all.

Wish you happy in China, Rodah! Chinese culture is relatively a closed culture, historically, and there are few mix-race or non-yellow Chinese citizens. Even some minority ethnicities are sometimes thought as foreigners (there are some Russian chinese but if you read the news/articles, it is worth mentioning they are Chinese and the authority has to emphasize they are Chinese). But with the education and development, I believe you and you-alike will be welcomed and integrated to China and Chinese culture!

Ronda, the fact that you're a foreigner reinforces the image that your son is also a foreigner when you are seen with him when people meets the two of you. If it was your Chinese husband seen taking your son to school or any social gathering, the perception will different. He would be seen as a Chinese having a foreign mother. Can you see the changes in people's minds? Have him go out more often with your husband.

Not true. His skin colour comes first. Even with his father he will still be seen as a foreigner. Mixed kids with Chinese or Korean Moms I know of suffer similar things. Hung Hymin in Korea suffered same.

African Chinese kids are not that rare in the country nowadays, after the boy goes to school and has some friends, everything should be fine. As long as he is a good kids knows how to get along with others, there's nothing to worry.

I would say all this inter-marriage and mix kid are very new thing for chinese because even though it has been 40+ yrs china open up but the communication with foreign culture is very minimum until the last 5-7 yrs so be open minded learn and enjoy , HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU AND FAMILY BRUH.

In China If your boy friend or girl friend schedule This family meeting, normally It's a happy ending. It's just a kind of official meeting to say hi. We think it's a kind of way to respect for new family members. So polite is only thing you need to care about in this meeting

With the lack of women in China, this will become normal in the future. It has been happening in the Caribbean for decades. We call the mix half-Chinese yet it is more common for the Chinese man marrying the black woman instead of the Chinese woman marrying the black man. The mix produces good looking children.

There has always been mixed race marriages in China for hundreds of years. China has always been a mixed race, race. I guess the mix race between Chinese and Africans are not so many yet. Maybe with the better relationship between China and African countries there will be more and this will be more common in the near future. Hope life will be easier for you and your family soon.

I think the Asian families are more open accept another race daughter in law than a son in law. To marry off one’s daughter so far away is harder than to accept another’s daughter.

Quite the contrary in many cases. An Asian son marrying a foreigner might be 'scary' for older Asian parents as 1)the new foreign daughter in law may not have the same extended family values. 2) will the son remain filial like is expected of all Asian (Chinese anyway) males?

I an African who lives in England and most of my friends are Chinese. We learnt alot from each other and due to my profession I was able to teach them about human evolution. They liked that so much and they keep educating others, it's funny though. Apart from that, I have a South African friend who is also married to a Chinese guy and when I told my friends here in UK their response was like "nooo wayyyy, how is she married to Chinese? Our parents are not so open minded to other cultures because they never travelled the world"

Nice to heard her experience. Myself is asian nand marrued with blode nordic woman. First there we had a culture problem from bothside family and relatives. When time go past, now we are happy and our family and relatives except who we are, also happy for us. Nothing goes smoothly, 😉😂

I think this is true of most countries, I believe a lot of people see it as protecting their culture and fear the loss of their culture. Racism definitely plays a role in some situations but also others are very proud of their culture and want to protect it.

I would like to point out that culturally its actually similar. If you go to the inner provinces, the elder sibling in a chinese family is also responsible for the siblings. Assuming the male sibling is the youngest amongst the elder sisters, then, the only male sibling will be responsible for the care and wellbeing of the family. Probably, Rhonda's family is more modern and progressive but in reality, the nucleus family is still the most important. Where I come from, this is still the norm but the younger educated generation is changing and unless the cultural norms and discipline is taught, there will be more and more dilution. The schools have to play a part in encouraging civic studies and uphold the cultural norms thats good and discard what is bad. My 2 cents.

This is one of the examples of genetic markers which come from and are in all people of the earth Which makes it harder for people to pigeonhole the person in front of them and possibly even their children as to what “ Race” they are and what culture they defined themselves with. I appreciate you sharing your experience as to get past certain cultural stereotypes

There are more and more mixed married in China. Mixed race kids should be accepted. There are so many different ethics in China, it should be globalized thing.

King: Just viewed your program for the first time and subscribed immediately! Into my third year at the University of British Columbia (UBC) studying International Relations in the Political Science Dept., so I am in constant contact with classmates from all over the world. The farthest I’ve been into China was a few years back just prior to the pandemic when I visited Shenzhen with two female Indian classmates. One of my classmates was there to visit her cousin, married to his Chinese university classmate. They have two beautiful girls and the two are just so much in love. They both found work in Shenzhen working for a Chinese tech company. Her Indian cousin’s opinion is the same as Rodah’s…just follow your heart irrespective of race. People who marry within the same ethnic group still manage to get divorced. So, what’s there to lose? Hi, I had a chinese grandfather and am mixed race as well. I would recommend that you should choose to protect your son. If he is mobbed later on in school, I suggest you place him in an international school there. I lived in Japan and it wasn't easy to be different in a Japanese school, so people would send their kids to an international school.

I think this is a problem in South Korea and Japan but not so much in china
