I think the ingrained anti-social behavior is actually what has me vastly prefer Starlight, to be honest. It's more interesting to me to see someone like that try and change and better themselves. With Sunsent, there really wasn't much learning to be done honestly after the initial acknowledgement that she was wrong; her arc has been more simply about finding acceptance (which is interesting enough in it's own right; I do still really like Sunset). Starlight has more of a real, uphill battle to fully understand what she should be doing,and I find that just compelling to see to see. And yeah, I guess the role Starlight seems to be playing, it could be said, was already filled adequately with Discord, but they're distinct enough personalities and both are entertaining to watch so I still really welcome her.

I can see where that would make Starlight more appealing, but I think she was hurt more by two things: Her incredibly rushed reformation, and the long gap between episodes. For the former, the initial reformation was as fast as Sunset's, but it felt completely different. Sunset was obviously a manipulative bully over the course of at least three years at Canterlot high, but it didn't go any further than that until the Fall Formal, which by itself was only a single event. She jumped from manipulative to outright evil for about three minutes until Twilight and the others broke the spell. Starlight on the other hand has been harboring these feelings ever since she was a child, and went so far as to create what amounted as a cult where she used her magic to take away something that made different ponies who they were, including the main six. Sunset never approached doing anything like that, and I would think that would make Starlight much harder to forgive. If not from the main six, then for the other ponies in her village, who seemed to forgive her in the span of two seconds. That could have been a fantastic episode on its own merits, but we didn't get that lucky. As for the gap between episodes, it's served to help Sunset feel more complete and leave Starlight stilted. We actually saw a seamless transition for Sunset. She wasn't forgiven by everyone right away, and we felt that with her throughout Rainbow Rocks. Both from the other students and from the main six at different points throughout the movie. We saw her grow onscreen, we saw her take those steps and deal with it, and we saw everyone else forgive her by the end of the movie. Friendship Games too, we saw Sunset taking so much responsibility for the magic she brought to the human world and feeling so much guilt, only to have everyone else, including Luna and Celestia, support her at the end. With Starlight all these things happened offscreen or during a song montage. She's been the focus of two episodes all season, and we haven't SEEN her grow nearly as much. She did the exact same thing in this episode as she herself referenced in No Second Prances with Big Mac. And the inconsistency between her in both episodes leaves me scratching my head a bit. When Pinkie introduced her to Mrs. Cake before, she was completely gung-ho and excited about baking, but now it makes her nervous? But then, after writing all of this I'm feeling like I'm still trying to compare the two of them when they're really nothing alike. Of course Sunset is going to be more adept at learning lessons and being a quick study, considering that she was one of Celestia's students at one point. And maybe I'm a bit bitter that we've never gotten any Sunset in the show where I think she could shine a little brighter. A Sunset and Celestia reunion is at the top of my wants list for this franchise.

Also Sunset had to have Social skills in the first place to run CHS without magic, she just used them for evil. Starlight substituted that for magic from the start. Starlight is a sociopath while Sunset was "only" a manipulative bully.

I agree. The haters can criticize me all they want but starlight's one of my favorite characters in the show. Over sunset

We all miss things; I think it makes since to miss little things for the big things, especially when you're busy reacting to something. I still probably miss things myself! ;)

I can't really imagine much of the stuff in season four and forwards that could happen if Twilight wasn't a Princess. And as for why the focus isn't all on Twilight as of late... If it was all friendship and laser beams every episode, it might get a little boring. Sure, Friendship is this show's thing, but they are trying to tell stories in upredictable ways. Shake up the cast, keep things fresh. Not really sure how else to put it, really...

The Twilight episodes has instead turned into character development for Starlight; which I don't mind it, I like Starlight's character, but hopefully in season 7 we'll get a few Twilight centered episodes. I really miss her being a main character in an episode. (Even though I do like Starlight's character; hopefully the episodes are more balanced out in season 7. Plus I heard that Tara Strong is doing a lot of voice acting for a lot of different things this year; not just MLP FIM.
