The line Pharyx says, "You know they're right, you need to get thicker skin.", to me was more of a way of him telling Thorax "I love you brother, but I also want you to get stronger.". What do you guys think?

The ending made this episode great. I was a bit worried that pharynx would be made out to be the bad guy, but actually theres no real "right" party here. I didnt really find pharynx that bad in this episode, i honestly though he was more in the right, especialy with him expressing his concerns at the feelings forum. I was relieved that the changelings realised that they were wrong and that he had the right idea.

I believe the changelings are struggling to 'feel' emotions for the first time rather than simply feeding off of them like they always have. All their anxieties make me think changing really upped their capacity for emotional expression, and they have to get used to it. I think that's why they're over the top right now in both friendliness and freaking out, why they have what is essentially an AA Meeting for discussing feelings, etc. They are literally creatures with magic based around emotion, so it only makes sense.

I wouldn't say Pharynx ruined the moment in the flashback. It was his way of encouraging Thorax to stand up for himself. He's wasn't going to be there to defend him from the others or anyone else for that matter.

"Surprised he doesnt just leave and find Chrysalis" I thought that too until i watched the whole episode. Theres a clear loyalty to his brother. "You can control your appearances" Ah but thats not their REAL appearance. It wouldnt be the same! I do like this episode and I like the lesson. ITs great they are free but they shouldnt lose their ferocity at least defen yourself dont be stupid about it. Makes you wonder if there is something special about Thorax and his kin since even before the reformation they looked different. His brother for the obvious color differences and Thoraxs magic color and after the reformation they have a royalesque appearence also the old monster attacks were not anything special either.

Bugbro's bullying actions in the flashback might seem really mean but remember that back then changelings were a military hive race. Being strong and aggressive was a do or die thing as Chryssy would not have been pleased that one of her drones was not doing his share. There was no place for weaklings that only wanted to play with their dolls. Pharynx was trying to teach his brother to stand up for himself and be the best he could be. He clearly didn't hate Thorax as he never let any of the other grubs lay a hoof on him but he wasn't going to be there forever to help him fight all his battles. By teaching his brother to fight back, he was saving him from a life of pain and rejection. And I think that it may have worked a little as we saw during Thorax's introduction that he was part of Bug Moms attack force on Canterlot. Also, fun fact, Pharynx is played by the same guy that played Bright Mac in The Perfect Pear. Dude has range.

I couldn't help but think that Thorax's brother sounded like a cross between Danny McBride and DWK, so I kept thinking that at any moment, he was going to make d*ck jokes, while also expecting Starlight and Trixie to make out.

fact this episode was suppose to be later in the season but they moved the episode more foreword to triple threat so people wouldn't forget about thorax brother and the rebel changelings that they mentioned about in episode 15

I just realized, Pharynx is Negative Shining Armor. They are both the older brother of a recently ascended royal person. They both have had significant military positions, are well liked by their siblings despite not bringing them up until they had any kind of plot importance (yes setting up this episode's plot in ep 15 counts), both are brave and loyal individuals, but could only save the day with other peoples' help, and seem unusually talented in their respective magics. The differences being that Shining Armor is a massive, soft-hearted nerd who only puts on the seriousness when he has to while Pharynx is an annoying jock who is always a stick in the mud; Twilight couldn't help but gush over how much she loves her brother that she sang a song about it, while Steve had to reluctantly give praise and confidence to Pharynx to the point where he had to bring up a flashback to justify it.

To be fair, some of the other big monster creatures that appeared in the series weren't always fought, yes we did have the Manticore, Tatzelwurm, the Cragadile, the Chimera, arguably the Green Dragon and the Bugbear, which was mostly taken care off screen with a few scenes here and there (Not sure if big bad end boss creatures like Tirek would count, here), but the Ursa Minor was not vanquished by Trixie's tricks and ended up being lulled to sleep and returned to its parent, the ponies mostly ran away from the Hydra, the Red Dragon, while assaulted once was talked down and Overpowered the ponies, Big Spike was a similar case, Cerberus was appeased with a ball and taken back off screen and the Timberwolves fall apart at any hit and ended up choking on a rock, (they also tend to be repelled by loud clanging of metal utensils), the Quarray eels were simply things that needed to be avoided as well as Snowbutt McTwinkles, the Snow Monster near Yakyakistan, and Steven Magnet was actually a nice guy who just needed some facial hair repair. Also I felt like the Molworth resisting Starlight's blast would imply that it would resist most magic attacks so Starlight probably didn't see a point in blasting it again.

The Maulfwurf was weak, yea; other monsters we saw after the Bugbear were Luna's Nightmare thingie (Tantabus), the crocodile monster from "Stranger than Fanfiction", and maybe the sea serpent from "P.P.O.V.". There weren't really many monsters lately.

Oh man, I literally had the same thoughts on the changelings as well. Just too soft... And the potential of that one line Thorax gave in the Ember episode about a "renegade group of changelings" is now gone. Great commentary though. :D

The thing about this episode to me is that even if they're peaceful they should still defend their home I mean come on they are shapeshifters couldn't they just change into a million ton weight and just crush the monster? Also I felt the speech Starlight said should've been a Thorax moment instead.

I think that the Changelings have a tendency to emulate their leader, which is why they were more agressive under Chrysalis, and kinder under Steve Thorax.

I don't mind the friendly Changeling's design. Except for the wing-tail! What the heck is the point of having a wing for a tail?! Anyways, I liked it. I've been wanting a new monster, too!

It seems we got a Celestia/Luna situation with Steve and his brother, with the brother being smaller, darker and a social outcast who's adjusting to the new way their species lives.

I think that Phalanx would be perfect for balancing out the new Changelings, honestly. As you saw, the Changelings have become so love and friendship loving that they've become weaklings to the point of being parodies of hippies. With Phalanx around, they may balance out between those wanting peace and those wanting to defend their homes, making them tougher.

There wouldn't have been much point in Starlight blasting the maulwurf again because Thorax said it has a really thick hide to protect it from magical attacks, though I suppose she could have tried to aim for it's eyes or something.

It was nice to have a song in place of the closing music for this episode.

I think Thorax's brother has better design than Thorax himself.

Honestly, i'm not really on Thorax's side here. His brother is a lot more interesting, and it's true, the changelings are such crybabies now.

I actually liked how "realistic" this episode's moral was for a change. It's always a nice thing to want peaceful solutions and to look for understanding rather than conflict...but just because YOU are peaceful don't always expect your enemies to be the same. Also, even people who are rather disagreeable and unpleasant to be around might have some good points to their own point of view, so maybe it's better to try and understand them a bit more rather than try to ban them from society because they make people feel "uncomfortable".

I can't wait to see what DWK has in store for this episode.

The problem to me is that the mole in the end of the episode could have been taken care by starlight alone easily, but MLP suffer from Fairy Tail problem, the power level depends on what the episode requires.

Kevin Lapin is one of my favorite writers still in show now with this episode and Honest Apple.

I really felt like, with his comments on the Changelings growing soft, the 'black paint' ordeal and the like, Pharynx is meant to be some form of audience surrogate. I like him. Even though, this show tends to use this as a 'take that' and an 'acknowledging problems means you don't have to fix them' towards the fan complaints from where I'm standing, so...eh. Irregardless. Anyway, Pharynx seems pretty cool. The stereotypical 'black and red and purple' eeevil colouration was so hilariously over-the-top. _He_ seemed so hilariously over-the-top! Even thought I would have slightly preferred an ending where his transformation wasn't treated as an inevitability. I get that the insect aesthetic leads to metamorphosis making sense for them, but can't we have _one_ Changeling look a little different? Doesn't the whole 'transformation' ordeal kind of dump on the fact that Thorax was initially accepted for wanting to make friends, not because he looked stereotypically 'good'? Engh. I digress. 13:33 or...second _prances,_ Trixie?

I could honestly see how Pharynx was going to change when it seemed pretty quickly that he was in charge of security originally. When you grow up feeling that's important, it's something that sticks with you and honestly I can sympathize with that. Personally I didn't like how the other changelings acted and Starlight's plan to fix things didn't help much. This episode was a meh episode for me, but it's way better than Honest Apple though.

I hope in a future episode, we get to see the mane 6 deal with an insurection movement. Something like maybe an anti-monarchist group.

I really enjoyed this episode, I love Thorax's brother, he's great. And the new design for Thorax's brother is a lot better in my opinion then Thorax and the other Changelings, a lot more subtle in the colors. Trixie was great in this, loved her one liners; normally I get annoyed but I ended up laughing at her antics more then I thought I would. Starlight of course was great in this as well, a lot of great moments between the characters. Great reaction and can't wait for more! XD.

On your point of Pharynx being unlikable, I disagree. He's really not that bad of a changeling apart from the teasing of his brother. It's just in the contrast of a society that's completely opposite of him. His point is clear and he was ultimately the one in the right. He was just so fueled with anger because no one understood him and what he was trying to do for them that he would lash out and refuse to accept love and friendship. It wasn't because he didn't think those were useful qualities. It was because he knew that there needs to be a stronger side to the hive and just sitting in feelings forums and craft time was leaving them defenseless. There can easily be a political comparison to this situation as well in that most would agree that a nation needs to be empathetic, caring, and fun, while also being structured, determined, and strong. In terms of entertainment quality, he was easily the funniest character in the episode. His voice may have been a bit much in some cases, but it's easy to understand and relate to him if you've ever felt like the only one taking things seriously but felt unheard or dismissed. Even the teasing which is really the only really bad character flaw was still light-hearted in the end. When Thorax and Pharynx fought together, it broke a barrier between them that allowed them to appreciate each other much better than before. Despite this, he still takes a bit of a shot at those around him, calling out Starlight for what she said and telling stories about making Thorax hit himself. However, the tone and context is much more relaxed and comedic than it was hostile and hateful. That to me is the best kind of teasing between siblings.

Well, it's entirely impossible that we're looking at these episodes months after the initial transformation, and we even saw they're having some slight struggles. They weren't dealing with the situation very maturely.
