Blind feral cat Thor gets his first bath! TinyKittens.com

Thor joined us yesterday from our Happy Forest feral colony. He is missing both eyes, and has been exposed to ringworm. While we wait for test results, we are giving him a lime sulphur dip to help clean any contamination off of him. He is not sedated, he's just a very good boy.
Welcome to our feral cat ringworm recovery room! Because ringworm is a highly contagious, zoonotic fungus, we have to do things a little differently in this room. We follow a strict contagion containment / disinfection protocol and will not be able to have anything in the room we can't soak in bleach for 10 minutes. We also have to put on disinfected bunny suits and gloves every time we enter the room, which makes for a LOT of laundry.
We trapped 9-month-old Horton from our Happy Forest feral colony, sick and desperately in need of help. He's starting to feel much better, but was lonely after we returned the last of his TNR'ed friends.
Holiday came in two days ago from the same colony, along with her blind mama Harriet. Holiday has ringworm too, so it worked out purrfectly for her to move in with Horton... and they became instant BFFs!
Mama Harriet is going to need meds at least eight times a day, so we are hoping we can get a negative ringworm test back to make her treatment easier on all of us. We won't know if she's clear until next week, at the earliest. Once we clear her, we are hoping she can move in with Mirok on our other livestream. Being blind, we want her to recover in a room that is easy for her to figure out and navigate safely. It is likely not possible for us to restore her vision, but we can cure her corneal ulcers and eliminate that as a source of constant pain.

Most cats don't like to be filthy. I bet he's loving having someone do the cleaning he hasn't been able to do for himself. I can't imagine what it must be like to be so desperately hungry and fighting for life and then suddenly the giant humans catch him and he thinks he's going to get eaten, but instead they feed him all he wants and pet him and are caring for him - makes me sentimental. IOW, my eyes are leaking here. Shelly, you are wonderful.

What a sweet, handsome beauty. He's probably laid back because of the skin disease and bathing, not to mention his blindness, but no doubt he knows that this wonderful woman is helping him and soothing him. When he's all better I have no doubt that many good people will want to give him a loving forever home. Thank you for helping our fellow brothers and sisters out there in need !!!

It had to have been severe neglect if humans let him go through the pain of letting his eyes rupture. He can't see how big humans are, that already makes it less scary. I also don't think he's feeling well. Some ferals get more accepting of humans if they're not feeling well.

Some ferals just get overwhelmed and shut down emotionally to cope. He probably feels awful and figures nothing worse can happen. It makes Shelly's job easier now but his behavior may change once he gets to feeling better

You are so right, my daughter first kitten rip holes in my blouse, when I tried to give him his first bath. Now after three rescues we found out if we leave a little water on the bottom of the bath tub they will get in and sat, while we wet a cloth and wipe them down, that a lot better the getting a beat down by cats 🤕🐾💖

I hope you got to see the intake video with his big snuggle session with Unka Dave. & the way the snuggles up to his pal Nyla is also quite darling. I think when he's had the treatment he needs he's going to be adopted very quickly & be an absolutely adorable lap kitty 😻

My girl is a rescue from a feral colony and was blind before I got her at 4 months. She fetches paper balls and will chase them around the house. She jumps on and off the table and she really enjoys life. I give her lots of enrichment and toys. She is the joy of my life, so Glad I saved her from an outdoor Michigan winter

I suspect that he's in such poor mental and physical health, he's just about given up - thankfully he's been rescued by wonderful people and will nursed back to health with love and patience.

It is just heartbreaking what feral cats and other animals go through in the wild. I am so glad that Shelly is taking care of him. I could not watch all of it, it is just so sad. Thank you Shelly and crew for all the hard work you do for the ferals.

My cat won't let me bathe her or clip her nails. Luckily she's an in-door kitty so I don't worry about the bathing but she's destroying the sofa in my living room even though I give her stratching posts.

Cheryl Howe, my boy was a rescue & would not allow brushing or nail clipping. He turned into the tasmanian devil with the vet and the groomer. He had to be sedated for the vet and anesthetized for grooming. But he was my baby & lived a long happy life. I miss him every day.

And your cat ear cleaning vibes work through the internet, my furry overlady Tigger, who's almost 19, she won't let me touch her feet and she's not quite as bad with her ears, but I've noticed how itchy they've been lately, coupled with her anxiety and pain from arthritis I hate making her upset, but just now she let me clean her ears, not completely but it's a first, thank you! They don't feel sorry for themselves and we shouldn't either. They just have to stay inside and hunt and play with enrichment toys. They learn the house layout and get along just fine. What he does need is a caring home.

Living on the California coast when we were kids, my mom used to take us to the beach and sometimes we would come home with tar on the bottoms of our feet. We used peanut butter to take it off, worked like a charm. I wonder if that would work for his paws, if it is pine pitch?!? 😳🙌🙌🙌😺

@@debracisneroshhp2827 Every summer I went barefoot ALL of the time except when we went to the clubhouse where our summer cottage was. By the end of summer I had new tar semi-permanent soles on my feet. We used peanut butter also.

Throughout all that is being done in his favor with TK, I have noticed he doesn't flinch with noise, and as far as I've seen in these videos he hasn't meowed at all. I'm wondering if he's deaf from the impacted earmites, and just as with humans hearing loss has a great impact on speech. Poor baby! 😥 But when he's totally cleaned up he will be a beauty! I pray he gets an awesome furever home with a family who shows him all the love he deserves! 🙌🙌🙌😺

Why would you need to give your kitties a bath? (if there is nothing wrong with them, like ring worm) They self clean, except of course for the hairless cats that need regular bathing...is that the type of cat you have?

@@CherylBerryl Even an ordinary cat can sometimes need a bath, and not just for ringworm. Mine once got motor oil on his back fur from sitting under a leaking car. His fur was very thick so he didn't immediately feel it and move. It was quite a large spot, and he also got some on his paws. I didn't want him licking that dirty oil off, so I had to give him a bath.

@@CherylBerryl One of my cats had really bad diarrhea after a small viral infection a few weeks ago and managed to get wet sloppy poo all over her butt and thighs which then was transferred to any surface she sat on. Safely to say, she needed a bath :) She had never had a bath before and it was not something she was going to be any kind of calm about ! Sometimes they just need baths.

Cheryl Bond - no,I do not have hairless cats. My cats every now and then I see them constantly cleaning themselves I feel like they are in need of a bath. A bath doesn’t work out for them or me. What I should have finished saying is that I can wipe them off with a warm washcloth. One loves it and the other two tolerate it.

cwtabbs1 So true! Some truly horrible examples of what Mother Teresa was REALLY like have come to light. Denying pain medication to patients because she thought that suffering brought them closer to Jesus! Allowing conditions in the places she worked in to descend into squalor and filth despite donations in the millions of dollars. Allowing untrained people to administer so-called “medical” help to the poor, although when SHE became sick she sought the best medical care in the western world. Agh I could go on & on......

What a sweet, gentle kitty! Was he really a stray? Amazing that he didn't mind that bath at all...my cat hates to be picked up. I wouldn't even dare give her a bath!

I’m guessing that some of the blind cats which appear to be feral that it’s more to do with being in a strange place to them than the actually being around humans. It must be much easier to socialise them when they are completely blind because they don’t have the sudden visual movements that sighted ferals would have. So their other senses help them to trust easier and it’s easier and quicker for them to feel safe. Plus they don’t have all the noise that they have outside. That’s my theory.

He did so well with his bath and it is good seeing him eating snacks so well also. Welcome TKHQ, Thor. Shelly and her team will take good care of you.

I loved watching Thor's spa day! Shelly is so great at keeping him calm- my kitty basically needed an exorcist in a HazMat suit to clean her after a GI infection.

There's just something so incredibly beautiful about seeing a smiling cat, Thor is such a sweet and handsome chap! Ginger Tom's are one of my favourite cats, we had one called Oedipus when I was a child, sweet, goofy boy!
