Blinding LED Lights, EMBARRASSING Lockouts & Electrical Cardio.
Communal emergency lighting isn't something that should be overlooked. John is carrying out a much needed communal lighting upgrade at a landlord owned building, improving both safety and running costs for the owner of this property. These new updated LED lights certainly light the way but also have John running up and down to get them just right!

When we had the lighting replaced in our corridors/emergency routes, we also had CCTV installed; we noticed that the cameras were using a lot of storage, the lights would trigger each other and trigger recording, I'm sure our sparkies had a "great time" adjusting them.

Working from the step ladder on the landing close to stair well has potential for a distance fall. Would be worthy and informative to include guidance for correct working at height procedures.

In the building where I live (18 floors in total and 3 staircases) here in Denmark, we have probably about 1000 lights that are on 24/7 because the emergency escape routes must always be adequately lit. Because it's a private residential building (as in not a place of business or public building, and not owned by the city/state) there's no requirement for emergency lighting or the normal emergency exit indicator lights. A few years ago they switched the aging and failing CFL bulbs out with LED, but they apparently didn't get the lumen right, so the lights were far too dim and didn't provide adequate light at night, and thus the building failed the fire inspection. They then claimed they had trouble getting the correct bulbs (even though you can buy them in any supermarket), so it took almost a year before we got the lighting up to a proper level. Then this winter there was a fault in the power supply for the lights, so most the building had no lights for a couple weeks. This is obviously illegal and also incredibly dangerous, and it literally meant it was impossible to walk around in the building without a torch, and of course the CCTV doesn't work in total darkness. We still don't have motion sensors for the lights, despite asking management for them repeatedly, so we're still wasting a ton of power on having the lights on constantly, because even LED adds up when it's that many lights. Supposedly the way the lighting is wired makes it difficult to add motions sensors, which really is just management's way of saying: we don't want to spend money on that when the current system is compliant

We did some communal lighting upgrades last year. 3 storeys, push buttons. 3 switches for each level. All wired in galv conduit. There were so many redundant lives when we finished! We pulled out loads of red singles and linked out every switch. It was very satisfying. A word of caution, those microwave sensors can see through flat doors. We had to turn the sensitivity right down outside the flats as some doors had windows in.

Similar problem. Had one in a toilet, which was fitted with a fire door. The light could sense you entering the building, through/under the toilet door plus through/under a second fire door! The light does not trigger if you walk past the closed toilet door and sometimes even fails to light when you enter use the toilet.
@lshsparks1155
@lshsparks1155 Жыл бұрын
I totally agree about the sensitivity on these. I default to 50% sensitivity then a lux disabled walk test to check switching for the escape route. Then set lux and re walk the route to check for any unwanted daytime operation then finally set the duration. There is a bit of skill in getting these set up well as even in daytime you get varying Lux levels in common parts where there are flat doors further away from natural light sources. I swear if the sensitivity was left at 100% they would probably be constantly on picking up traffic outside the building! 🙈😁.

Looks like one of the several different "electrical screwdrivers" Bosch makes. Some of them have torque settings, and AFAIK they all use normal bits. The only difference to a drill is the weaker motor

Hello, Artisans. I wanted to ask, if you could produce a video, about energy monitoring in your home? Smart Meter, Smart plugs or whatever is the best possible and cost effective way to keep an eye on your consumption. And also wanted to say, thank you for your very well made and informative videos. You are a great team 👍
@tonipeters4543
@tonipeters4543 Жыл бұрын
May I suggest you get a clamp on meter with a remote display, (Amazon) you can watch your consumption change as you use it, problem is after a few weeks you just ignore it, since you must boil the kettle, run the washing machine etc. Smart sockets that you control via app or voice, are a novelty, you should get up and turn things off. If you want to use less electricity, get LED lamps and switch stuff off as soon as you are finished with it. 😀

You should really be putting todays date on those batteries so the next contractor knows when the 4 years of service is up. Yes the manufacter date is on them but that could already be a year prior to installing. You may have done so but it didn't look as though you did.

Lights without a centre entry hole aren't well thought out! We had those old pneumatic push buttons scattered through the stairs and foyers my block of flats. Many years ago I had the fittings replaced with LEDs and inbuilt microwave movement detectors. The lights on stairs are set to 15 second off time if no movement. I've subsequently replaced foyer lights with the same plus a dim to 10% function and they're set to 1 minute before step dimming down.

The question is how well the electronics last with the constant switching over time as unfortunately led by design like these fittings means there not genuinely user serviceable and more aided to be replaced then repaired. Where as with the 2D lamps you could replace the lamp with little electrical knowledge. But in theory the passive switching is a nice touch and better for the tenant. Who pays for these in service charges.

There is a need for a useful BS standard specifying fixing hole and cable entry positions for the common styles of commercial lights, linear bulkhead emergencies, these drum lights etc. It would then be a simple swap. But that is common sense, not what we usually get from BS standards......

Wago is actually a German company, so technically it's pronounced Va-go, with the 'a' being soft like in 'palm', although in English you would pronounce the 'W' as 'W', not 'V'. That being said, it's next to impossible to start pronouncing something properly once it's ingrained, and I still pronounce it wago with a hard 'A' like in 'bat', but anyway you look at it, it's definitely not 'waygo'. Go and sit in the corner and think about what you've done 🤣

You don’t get any time allowed for setting up systems or testing properly as it’s all cut throat and the cheapest prices always wins.Standards are so low it’s embarrassing. The race to the bottom began decades ago and now it’s so bad I’m glad Im retiring soon and leaving the electrical industry as it’s been dumbed down by cowboys and the unqualified 10 week course brigade who will work for 60 quid a day. Pathetic and a testimony to how those in power look down on the building trades. Some so called electricians don’t even know how to complete a minor works certificate or do any testing.
