This movie was way better than it had any right to be. This was a literal recipe for disaster, from the marketing, to the production hell, to just the fact it's a video game adaptation, it should have been horrible, but somehow it ended up amazing.

Jim Carrey as Robotnik/Eggman is somehow perfect.

I’ll never forget when the “blue Devil”/Sanic drawing was shown and there were uncontrollable giggles in the theater for the next minute from those (me included) who recognized that piece of art

The ending showed us that he slowly becoming "The" eggman now in the next sonic movie

You have to appreciate that they didn't just throw in Tails, Knuckles and the whole gang this early. They focused on making this a fun standalone movie and establish Sonic and Eggman's rivalry first, and everything else was just teased and left for a future film. It's kinda like the games. Tails and Knuckles didn't appear until the second and third game. Also call me crazy but I liked James Marsden more than Jim Carrey in this film. I find Donut Lord really likeable, more so than any other film where a cartoon character goes into the human world. That may be because unlike the other humans in those movies, at least this one doesn't feel like he's just doing it for a paycheck and doesn't actually wanna be there. He also gets extra points for not having that forced "My life was perfect and you ruined everything" moment those kind of films usually have.

Thing that got me was that this film was genuinely funny. The dialogue was genuinely witty, and for once the pop culture references felt right because Sonic would totally do that.

Honestly, I would watch a whole movie of Jim Carrey, stuck on an alien mushroom planet, losing his shit.

A subtle nod to the original SEGA games: the first game only has Sonic in it, yet since the sequel teased Tails, it can be a nod to Sonic the Hedgehog 2, where Sonic and Tails team up and is the first time we meet Tails

I loved this review! But I've got to say I disagree with James Marsden not being needed in the sequel. Not only has he signed up for multiple movies, but the character he plays (tom) basically became sonic's dad towards the end of the movie, and there are many times where the movie establishes just how important he is to sonic. Pat Casey (one of the writers of the movie), stated that sonic went from befriending tom to becoming a part of his family, (more specifically his dad), so if anything, the sequel would most likely lose its fluidity if tom was excluded.

"I LOVE THE WAY YOU MAKE THEM!!" I keep shouting this at my friends at Starbucks. They really want me to stop. But they can't make me. XD

Jim Carrey was fricking awesome in the movie and James Marsden made the movie even better, WAY better than I'd expected (Marsden basically deserves more recognition, he's so underrated.). Ben Schwartz did a marvelous job as Sonic too. I'm not a big fan of Sonic but I'm so hyped up about the second movie right now!

This movie does make a lot more sense when you look at it as Robotnik's origin story.

This movie was great. So many references. The opening with all the old games gave me a great nostalgic feeling. And the pixel animation during the credits was cool.

Since its confirmed that there's going to be a sequel, I think they are going to have Sonic grow as a character into what we know from the video games, especially with Tom around because he seemed be a bit snarky like Sonic in the games

I loved this movie. There were so many sonic game references to it. I especially loved how Sonic beat Robotnik. Continuously hitting his dome to where you're seeing the cracks like the Sonic games. You guys keep referencing dark Sonic from satam but there was also a lighter Sonic show "Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog" voiced by the same actor. Loved that show.

The beginning flashback uses a song from Sonic Mania, uhhh Robotnik's theme is actually his theme from The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog show. And of course, the piano cover of Green Hills.

I know that Jim Carrey was great as Robotnik but honestly, Ben Schwartz as Sonic is so perfect. I’ve always liked characters he voice acted (Randy Cuningham, Dewey Duck, etc.) and he made me really love Sonic now (I’ve actually never liked the game/slash TV series Sonic-Idk Why to be honest; but this Sonic that really looks so good with Ben as a voice actor of his, I must say I’am a fan now).

the little red animals that were hunting sonic in the beginning of the movie were Echidna's which is what Knuckles is, if you look then you can see that they have the spiky gloves that Knuckles has.

it's funny to think this was the last film i saw in theaters (back before the... outbreak hit America) and i brought my mom along and we had a blast. theater wasn't fully packed but the few people we had were fun to be around. big fans of Sonic. i can't hate this film. Sonic is great, Jim was great, the movie is just great! and after hearing a sequel is in the works WITH TAILS! i'm pumped!

I genuinely loved this movie. It was adorable and heartwarming with a batshit crazy Jim Carey performance - all I ever wanted from a sonic movie.

It was the first movie I watched with my 5 year old, on our own, at the cinema. It was just after the first wave of corona (in Japan), so there were only 2 other people and he didn't have to be too quiet. It also had nothing in it that scared him in the dark cinema. He absolutely loved it. He was laughing and laughing and I loved it too. So, it'll remain a special movie for me. Very relieved!

I watched this movie, not expecting much. I thought Jim Carey would break his back carrying this movie. I honestly was planning on calling it a 4/10. Boy was I wrong. Characters were lovable. Sonic himself looked fantastic and almost had the personality from either Sonic Adventure or Sonic Adventure 2 (still my absolute favorite Sonic game). Jim Carey was the perfect choice for Robotnik/Eggman as he is literally the only man alive that can be as expressive as an animated character. I was ready to call it a good movie, then the credits came on and nostalgia hit me like a sack of bricks. After all that, I still squealed like a fangirl (despite being a 6ft+ grown ass man) when Tails showed up. Without a doubt, my favorite Sonic character. Hell, even during my edgiest years of loving Shadow, I still had a soft spot for that little cinnamon roll of a fox.

The Sonic franchise is so weird because it's so wacky and cartoonish most of the time, but it can evolve into Dragonball style fights and actually be pretty threatening with it's characters and stakes, which is why so many kids/teens are drawn to it. It's a tricky world for people to get into because they see these cute little animal characters and think it's weird that it ever gets serious but honestly that's the charm, like TMNT or similar cartoons.

The mushroom planet (Mushroom Hill) is part of Angel Island, which is where Knuckles lives, so...Knuckles as the antagonist for Sonic 2?

This movie definitely was a set up for more to come, with the origins of Eggman and Sonic, then also Tails coming at the end while still being a fun action movie. My only complaint is the lack of using Sonic soundtrack. Also it’s one of the last movies I saw in theaters and the Tail post-credit scene was an awesome reaction lol.

Honestly, if Sonic could have just been a darker colour blue as well, they'd have nailed the design for me. Love how Tails looks, love how Knuckles looks in the trailers for the sequel. The evolution of Robotnik and his design was great. Carrey really hammed it up, and yet somehow made it work very well. His relationship with Stone was hilarious. Way better movie than I was expecting. Had some cheesy jokes, but we aren't really the target audience any more so you have to expect some kid-friendly humour.

I'm surprised they didn't pick up that the Green Hills farm was the same farm they used for Smallville.

I went into this movie expecting just a cheesy kids comedy, but it was actually a surprise.

Some of you could say it wasn't a merch strat, but i still wanna believe in how the first sonic design was just to reunite all the internet in one place

Watching this reaction/movie again makes me realize that Robotnik's line of "...in my orphan face" might be troublesome considering the additional character in the sequel.

As a Sonic fan who is way too invested in the Sonic lore I am very excited for the second movie. This one is fun but doesn't take many risks. But it makes some nods to the lore that let fans know the writters still have that in mind. Like the tribe at the begining is an Echidna tribe (Knuckles' species) which are actually extinct in the games. I think what the writters where going for with this movie was some sort of origin story, which explains why Sonic seems younger and a bit more immature and vulnerable compared to the games. Also the way they are gradually building up Robotnik into the vilain he is in the games is way more interresting than having already being that vilain. Like they really tried contextualise a lot of things, like the way Sonic called Robotnik * "Eggman" based on his robots being egg-shaped and doesn't come out of nowhere either because it's been established in the begining of the movie that Sonic likes giving nicknames. But it also doesn't want to just follow the games and introduces its own ideas (which is a good thing to me). Anyway, in the end I'd that movie was fun but plays it too safe for me. But what has been established here has the potential to build up into something really great and I really hope it will because the Sonic franchise has told some really awesome and touching stories that deserves to be represented.
