We chat via Zoom with Blink-182's Mark Hoppus about the band's new music, including single 'Quarantine' and their planned EP set to drop this Autumn. Plus, Mark tells us about his new show on Apple Music, 'After School Radio', which sees him playing the best in pop punk, emo and alternative music as well as interviewing special guests. Also, he reflects on the recording of Blink-182's live album 'The Mark, Tom And Travis Show' as it approaches its 20 year anniversary. Finally, we get some details on some possible new music from Simple Creatures, his side project with All Time Low's Alex Gaskarth.

Rock Sound cant wait!! So interesting that mark describes the EP as Nine + TOYPAJ, with the take off your pants and jacket style of songs being created during quarantine. I wonder why them being separated and in the Covid-times led their sound to get a bit punchier.

What’s up with pot leaf? How old are you? What are you in 9th or 10th grade? I think it’s time you maybe evolve a bit and become a productive member of society instead of risking being a future file number for the police. I will not respond to this. In fact after I send this I’ll arrange it so responses won’t be accepted. Mostly because I want you to reflect on what I said, thereby a response isn’t necessary. And in case you decide to respond back with a lot of nonsense I won’t have to be subjected to it. This gives me the last word and by default I win. Have a nice day.

the mark tom and travis show is my favorite blink album of all time, neighborhoods and nine come close but the energy on this album is just insane. Toms vocals are on point and travis is just a insane on the drums. The amazing thing to me is that I think that this was my favorite album when I was like 16, now that im in my early 30s and listening to it Im like fuck yeah, this is the shit. Ive gone through a lot of changes in taste of music over the years but to hell with it, this album is still up there as one of my favorites.

I feel like the best part about it now is simply the inclusion of the two 'Cheshire Cat' songs--"Carousel", and "Peggy Sue". Especially because of the fact that they went back into the studio and overdubbed the hell out of the basic 'live' tracks, we essentially get a proper re-recording of those tracks, from the record with far and away the worst production quality out of the bunch. The result, especially in the case of "Carousel", is that these versions imo more or less become the definitive ones, even just based on audio clarity alone (although, after chuckling mildly the first 2 or 3 times hearing it, after that, I do wish I was somehow able to get rid of all the "Brrrrr, Stickup!!" etc etc asides and just have them sing-the-fucking-lyrics lol). I actually wish they had played MORE of the 1st record, although that would've made no sense as far as playing to the crowd they were at the time...I'd love to be able to put together a collection of like, better-quality live takes of that real early stuff, though.
@brandonmclean58
@brandonmclean58 3 жыл бұрын
@@mywhychromosome yeah, exactly, it has all the best versions of the songs from the cheshire cat and dude ranch albums. There were a few songs from dude ranch that didnt make the album that I wish did unfortunately, but they did do quite a set list. WIsh they would do another "live" album, its hard to find any decent live recordings of blink lately, I don't really blame them, all the mixes are just terrible, if they actually made an effort to mix the songs properly they would probably have something decent.

For the record.. the single market kills the suspense and excitement.. it’s like Christmas.. you wait all year for one day and that’s what makes it special! What these guys are suggesting is dividing up those 12 presents into once a month.. personally I’d rather build to the excitement rather then open 1 present up once a month.. especially considering songs are only like 3 or 4 minutes.. it’s like great, I listened to this 6 or 7 times and never listen to it again.. whereas with a full album, I love the journey of understanding from track to track.. plus you can introduce so much more behind the scenes!

its 2020 dude, releasing an album every 1- 2 years apart doesnt work anymore. people dont have the attention span they use to. if a band isnt constantly releasing new music people will forget about them and move on. the best way to stay relevant if you as the band still want to release albums with 4 signals from the album dropping before the full album is to drop one single a month for 4 months in a row then drop the album but make sure the 4 singles are at the end of the album cause most fans have already heard them. also most people dont listen after song 8 on the album. look at new rap acts that have popped up in the last 5 years alot of them release a new song every week and they have like 1 million monthly listeners on spotify each. they could also release an ep every couple of months. basically the band has to try to keep the fans thinking about them at all times.

Does rock music NEED to “catch up”? I think the reason rock music is so special is because it’s not anything else. Also, fans of rock and rock bands usually have very special relationships with albums. That doesn’t really happen in most/ any other genres.

Definitely was recorded live as Mark mentions here. They bring a recording sound truck along on tour and record all (or multiple) the shows and then in post production they edit all the best takes together. On the Mark Tom and Travis show they obviously fixed a lot of the mistakes in post production because the performance is basically flawless which we all know is not true Blink. It's actually pretty standard practice for most large bands doing a live album to do it that way.

Oh thank God their new music will harken back to their earlier days. I did not like “Nine” at all.

Idk I love the old and new blink. Their music has changed and grown up as they have. They don't feel like they *need* to stick to the same exact type of album each time. Every album I like more than the rest. "Signature blink but something different" love it. If he likes the music they're making that is a very good sign. If a musician is proud of their music (we're our worst critics) then it's a very good sign this is gonna be great.

Mark please stop making trash songs and calling it Blink 182. It’s the most bland commercial crap I’ve ever heard.
