Elizabeth Brackett's harrowing trip home the night of the big snow Tuesday, Feb 1st. The next day the big dig out began..without much success for Brackett or the cars stranded on Lake Shore Drive.

I live in Whiting Indiana ( right next to the south side) and that was a wicked storm. I can only remember the blizzard of 67 being worse. Thanks for sharing this.

Reminds me of 1967 & 1979-biggest snowstorms ever in Chicago and 1999 too

Elizabeth Brackett, you are a wonder! Thank you for a superlative account of what had to be Chicago's worst snowstorm ever. I was trapped by a 1960 blizzard in Jersey, trying to drive from Newark to Elizabeth. It took 8 hours to go 3 miles, but the actual storm was not so dangerous to human life as your storm.

I can't stop laughing at the guy who went to get the newpaper. XD And the neighbor who did a half twist onto South Lake Shore Drive. Then again it was pretty much what EVERYONE was doing that day. It was COLD that day after the whole thing was done dumping all of that snow. Went out with some friends and we had to go back after about an hour or maybe an hour and a half cause it was cold and the wind was stinging against our cheeks.

I was going to Chicago State at the time...I led a whole line of people from a stuck bus on 95th and St. Lawrence to the 95th/Dan Ryan CTA station.Why was I leading them? Because I had the good sense to carry a pair of goggles in my coat pocket, and thus could see in the driving blizzard. :)

Talk about bringing a knife to a gun fight. He is out there with a broom. In five ft. of snow. OK honey. The car is not going anywhere. But, at least you can see out of the windows. Oh. Never mind, you can't get in. Sorry bout that.

With blizzard reports days In advance. May god take no pity on people fail to prepare and then have somewhere that just can't live without them being there. May god have mercy on the people who's roads they leave their cars in blocking plows and emergency response vehicles.

Darwin Award for leaving your car right in the middle of the street. Real genius! Why bother backing up, turning around and driving till you find a spot on the curb of a given street so as to do the right and intelligent thing to thusly allow plows to do their job instead of completely blocking the street?
@adinp93843 жыл бұрын
They were obviously unable to move from the middle of the road where they were trapped. Happened on Lakeshore drive where hundreds of cars were under feet of snow.

Chicago weather is nasty, sure it doesn't snow as much as let's say Buffalo, but the city is way too congested and heavy snows are always a bit*h because everyone lives right on top of one another, and why fix up your house? The weather will fu*k it up eventually
