Mike takes his open bolt Sterling Mk.4 in 9mm Para out to 100m and 200m to see what it's capable of at its sighted ranges, which are pretty much "long range" for an open-bolt SMG. The results are interesting though!

You hit the target at 200 meters with a 9mm sub machine gun with iron sights. I would take that as a win. Even the misses were close enough to provide target suppression. You are able to keep the enemy in cover and taking casualties.

If I'm not mistaken it's in Thun and you can probably find the blueprints somewhere on the internet. It's mainly used by the swiss military and also accessible to the public so as to avoid pretty much all risks of accidents and enable uninterrupted firing at a range of different ranges at the same time (pun intended). Having a 'trench' below the targets is pretty much standard on outdoor ranges which have different distances available in Switzerland

@Bill Whittaker It's been a while since I've seen those videos but if I remember correctly he explained the ranges set up in one of the videos. I may be missremembering but I believe that it was setup for longer range shooting only and the way the shooting area was built it was impossible or near impossible to get line of sight on the highway to shoot at it. I would have to go back and find the video to verify.

I am very sorry that some folks decided to throw a fit about your loading procedure instead of just enjoying the show. We have a saying in the US Marines that relates to this: "There are three ways to do anything, the right way, the wrong way and the Marine Corps way." (Or in this case, the Army way.) What you did was a "right way", because it was safe, but you already know that. The "Army way" can be technically right or wrong, but because it is the "Army way" those who love the Army will say it must be the MOST RIGHT AND ONLY WAY TO DO ANYTHING!!! Because the Army (Or Marine Corps) never gets anything wrong....... Love your show, keep on being great.

@@BlokeontheRange I enjoyed your vid and have been interested by the discussion of open v. closed bolt loading. Everyone is sort of right. I was brought up through WW2 films and wargaming (the shame) to think that smgs were just brilliant out to 200m. Suffice to say that I am very glad that by the time it would have been my personal weapon (as RSO) it had been replaced by the SA80. British Army drill was indeed to load with the bolt closed, and speaking as a firing point officer on a range I think that that was the best call. Weapons are never waved around more than when you are loading ( i.e. in modern terms inserting the magazine) and I'd very much prefer that at that point the guns were basically harmless. Cocking them (left hand over the top of the barrel, I have no idea why anyone thought otherwise) is easy with all the weapons pointed down the range. In the great scheme of things for experienced shots it makes little difference - and your practice certainly replicates what would happen in intensive, short range operations. I am not sure, but you know I don't think I fired the SMG probe often, if at all. All the shooting practices were kneeling or standing as I recollect. But, s a rifleman myself, I may be biased! I do remember one of my serjeants - probably at Sandhurst - telling us that the shorter the barrel the more dangerous the weapon - to your friends, but not your enemies, Spot on!

I trained on this weapon in the mid 1980s whilst in the infantry. The drill on mag replacement from memory was safety on, check clear, remove mag, bolt released to take pressure off sear with bolt closed, replace mag, check safety, raise to firing position and cock using left hand, release safety and fire. There was very little chance of a ND as it was easy to cock even if wet and this was the safest means to load and make ready. The training video used to warn of carrying the weapon with it in the cocked position and safety off because a knock could jolt it enough for a ND on a worn sear. The example was jumping off a Bedford 4 tonner carrying the weapon. In the video, a lad does that and the weapon discharges killing the bloke in front. We were drilled that bolt must always be forward on a loaded weapon unless instructed otherwise. In retrospect there was still the risk of the bolt being jolted enough to discharge as the bolt was free to move back against spring pressure without engaging on the sear and the weapon discharging but I never heard of any examples of this.

You can really tell why the Sterling was in use for so long: it's a handy and incredibly cheap PDW. Like you say it wouldn't hold up to the MP5, but it would certainly get the job done in a sticky situation and only cost a couple of handfuls of loose change. Once someone let us shoot a specially modified 9mm MAC submachine that had been fitted with an AR15 Stock and buffer tube. At 50 yards it was quite controllable. Normally that sort of submachinegun fires in excess of 1,000 rounds per minute and can not be controlled very well. While very expensive, some in the USA do own full auto weapons and occasionally some one will me shoot theirs.

Completely agree. I always reckoned on getting mad score on APWT. Funny how some "experts" reckoned that the Sterling was no good over 25 yards and that at 50 the bullets wouldn't penetrate a wet blanket! One interesting situation did develop when sub standard ammunition was issued; the working parts apparently did not recoil far enough for the catch to engage. Result? Unstoppable automatic fire, a court martial offence! I know a person who had this situation occur, was court martialed and fined. Eventually, the real truth came out (his story, of course, was not believed) but it took him ages to get his money back.

Hi BOTR, I used to help test fire factory fresh Sterlings for function and to set the sights. We used FNM NATO speck Portuguese. Same as 2z. We also trained people who were purchasing a gun (pirates in South China Seas in those days). Page 13 of the Mk 4 manual points out at 5.3 that when the bolt is forward and the safety is applied the bolt and trigger are locked. To apply magazine at this point keeps the gun safe but the safety has to be rotated into go to cock it. Stops STEN syndrome and is how you carry it when hoping you do not have to use it. Cocking an open bolt gun with the safety off is not recommended for an obvious reason unless it is pointed towards your enemy. --- an all metal gun is no fun at minus 20 without thick gloves. --- always cock and apply safety before inserting mag on the range - should still lock both trigger AND bolt. (And at least you know your sear is still in there!) Point within the safety arc of the range and select speed. Oh ---- and always train as you would use a gun in combat. Under stress you will revert to the 2000 times you repeated an action in practice

Many years ago, I trained with the C1 SMG (AKA the Sterling Mk 4) in full auto while in the Canadian Forces. I remember shooting these SMGs was a lot of fun. One of the drills we were taught was engaging targets with bursts from the hip. I know that sounds very Hollywood but it was a standard practice out to 25 yards. Two things came to mind while watching your video Mike. First every SMG I ever fired on auto always lifted a bit and slightly to the right, why I never knew. Second, we were told that even with the two apertures the longest reasonable range for engagements was 100 meters.
@John-un3lj
@John-un3lj 3 жыл бұрын
I think the reason as to why you experienced the gun lifting to the right is because you are right handed (I persume). If you look at the AKM - it has a muzzle brake cut at a 45'ish degree angle and slightly angled so that the 'open' part of the brake faces upper right hand 'corner' - this means that the gases will only push on the part of the brake that remains, being the down-left side - thereby pushing the muzzle at a downward-left angle and the only reason as to why that is, to me at least, would be that the majority of people are right handed shooters (the army seldom makes guns for left handed people) and that the left hand that is in place on the handguard supports the left side of the gun more so than the right side, causing it to climb upwards and to the right and the muzzle brake on the AKM fitted the way it is attempts to even it out.

A pity you didn't have a spotting scope as you could have adjusted at 100m, and I was impressed that you could get a few in at 200m. I was regular RAF SAC armourer in the 70s, so familiar with the weapon, but never got to fire it, and we only fired the L1A1 SLR on 25m ranges after basic annually... couldn't miss. However I went back to college as a full time mature student a couple of years after I left and, to help finances, I joined the TA as a REME Craftsman attached to my local TA infantry regiment (A COY 4QLR) and it was there I learned how to be accurate with the SLR on 1000m range, standing, sitting and prone, but it took me a while. I never got to fire the GPMG either, which pissed me off, as I was often 'volunteered' to be gimpy man, carrying the weapon plus belts of ammo, to make a squad up if they were short. The range you're on is great with the underground passages to get to the butts, but on the Shorncliffe range there was a controller in a hut behind you who controlled pop up targets at various distances down the range, and they either had a excellent spotting scopes or had sensors which told the operator where your shots were landing so they could tell you if you'd made the grade immediately after firing. I didn't the first time, but I'd got really used to the rifle and its recoil etc, was able to quickly settle, get my breathing right and I did very well the next time.

The Swiss certainly have invested some money in their ranges with lit tunnels to the target stands. Not too common in the USA. Perhaps some of the older ranges used for NRA highpower shooting might have it. I have never seen anything like it in the USA. Interesting that the sterling was not sighted in at the factory or at an armory. I missed it, but is there a way to drift the front sight over? Some of the stringing at 200 meters could be the quality of the ammo. It should first be a NATO spec load similar to what the gun was intended to fire and a chronograph would let you know if the velocity was uniform. In the US a lot of the generic white box is a bit slower than NATO. Also the 124 gr bullets vs 115 might work better at the longer ranges. A proper rest might help also under the butt stock and also some where up front. But still I am impressed with what that little gun did.

Best I can remember from back in the day with the Canadian Forces SMG C1 (same weapon), the front post sight was adjustable for elevation and the rear flip aperture sight adjusted for line. Would do a few 5-round groups at 100m for zeroing.

Interesting, I was recently testing how accurate Stribog SP9A3 can be at 75 and 100m. It's comparative adventage is closed bolt and nice trigger, its' disadvantage for long range is just 4.5" barrel. I tested with tripod, sitting position and 4x scope (1-4 LPVO) to minimize shooter error/ With Magtech 147gr JHP, Sterling 124gr JHP and S&B 140gr FMJ, I was able to get 7-8MOA groups of 9 rounds both at 75 and 100m. Best 7 of 9 were around 4.5 MOA. Not all loads were so consistent. 150gr S&B was pretty good horizontally, but a lot of dispersion in vertical @13/10 MOA at 75m. Some were just generally all over the place like 124gr S&B. Pretty interesting differences.

At 200m, it's best to just hit the Fun switch and fire short bursts. i once had a go on the L34 suppressed version which had the closed bolt system and it was much more accurate than the L2. Thanks for showing us a classic Cold War sub-gun.

Do you have any idea when that "crinkle finish" was introduced? I left the British Army in 1972 and, as a Medic, was often issued a Smudge as a personal weapon (or an L9). All the Smudges I ever handled had a smooth black finish, so it's a question that interests me. The most comfortable Smudge I had was one issued to me by the Black Watch armourer when I was attached to them for a scheme. He'd done a bit of "unofficial experimenting" and replaced the cocking handle with a large rounded knurled knob he'd made himself. It certainly avoided the digging in the ribs that was the norm when carrying the weapon over your shoulder on the sling. I've always wondered why it wasn't universally adopted. MsG

that specific range is, I believe, military with civilian access. most long-range ranges (up to 300m) are built similarly to that, and some are military while others are owned by shooting clubs.

The cracking of overhead bullets reminds me of when I was in the ATC as a lad. We were at a range used by RAF Catterick so we were on the Yorkshire Moors somewhere. I was in the butts and had just put up a patched target when unbeknownst to us a bunch of RAF Reg types had come past and decided to loose off their remaining 7.62s on my target- just for a laugh. The target ended up with about 200 holes in it in about 30 seconds. When we got up to the other end of the range everybody was pretending nothing had happened- no gunners, no casings, no trucks, everybody schtum. Bastards!

Rufus Chucklebutty 1973 or 1974. Never say nothing would never do whatever because it happened. Next you’ll say a range master would never pick up a loaded SLR and throw it against a brick wall or a bolt with a tiny sliver of matchstick in it rendering it full auto would go through a military armoury and not get caught. Or a sterling gets handed in with a live round stuck in the breach without someone warning about it. Military dude, shit happens that shouldn’t do.

In the Canadian army we shot our SMG's (basically the same gun) out to 100m on a regular basis, accuracy was good. I shot my Beretta Storm in .40cal using 135gr bullets out to 200m with a lot of accuracy. Sadly the new laws here prohibit it being shot.

Nice report. I guess all these close combat weapons like the Thompson .45, M1 Carbine.30, were best at 50-75m or less. I would have preferred to use the .303 Enfield, Garand M1 or a BAR if I could. I really liked that Swiss target range they did it right. I think too it's costly for USA public ranges & some idiots here would certainly want to take selfies up range with live fire!

Ask yourself: can you get plenty of hits on a Fig:11 target with a Stering to 200m? 30 rounds, sure anyone can. And a heck of a lot more hits than with any pistol. Anything further then you were probably issued a radio and can call down a Fire Mission. I'm a huge fan of the Sterling. They can take a beating, and easy to clean. Given some practice most people can get them to hit whats needed frequently enough to the range 9mm is useful for.
