It's almost like death is another character in the book. It looms over the entire plot that it almost makes it feel like at the time that the book is set in, death was just another entity in their existence as opposed to the opposite of existence (like it should be). 9:13 I read a little life and it is one of my favourite books bc it served its purpose. I think when people criticise books on being too gory without first thinking about the purpose it served, it takes away from idk, the intention of the author, I think. 8:07 And it is absolutely accurate that pain and suffering, wars and all that is part of humanity, these things actually happened and they continue to happen, someone just found an artistic, literary way to put it on paper.

death as a character is 🔥🔥 when the judge says 'before man was, war waited for him' it gives the vibe of an actual entity lying in wait. good shit

My man. Excellent review of a dense book brother. I like to view the Gang has the 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse. In this year guns evolved into what they are now and they copped them right from the jump. I just finished this book and need some time to marinate on it. Excellent video man Im subbed and tuning in.

Hey Nate, great review. This book is a masterpiece, McCarthy is a genius, no question. You know how a lot people say that the devil was the star of the show in Paradise Lost, I think the same thing happened here. That diabolical Judge Holden was fascinating. I got the impression that he was a pedophile. and child killer. In fact one of his men saw a murdered child and was on his way to kill him, and the Judge fearlessly told him to do what he had to do, or words to that effect. I think the Kid may have met the same fate as some of the children in the book as well. It was wild how McCarthy introduced the Judge with him lying about a preacher and turning his congregation against him. He could be the most evil character ever written.

love this take! i agree too that the judge ends up being the star of the show. he's a really interesting conception of evil, a very different kind of villian.

I think the Covenant of the Glanton gang is so interesting. They almost strike me as a sort of inverse of the disciples of Jesus or something like that. If you read it like that, the kid would fill the role of Judas. When the Judge meets the Kid in jail he speaks of the Kid’s betrayal. I’ve seen some people say that the actual physically betrayed them to the Yuma, but I think it was a spiritual betrayal. By holding some small measure of mercy in his heart he negated their covenant and invalidated their invincibility. I’m loving your reviews man.

Good video dude. I’d like to recommend a non-fiction book that I think you’ll find mind opening and absolutely fascinating. “Demonic Males; apes and the origins of human violence” by Richard Wrangham 👍🏻
