Saya going crazy in Vietnam and losing her memories, is also established pretty early on in the show, so she's already had her 'turn into a feral monster' moment long before the start of the series, with Karl Fei-Ong--it's how she ended up being adopted by the Miyagusuku family in the first place, and thinking she was human. Having her fight with the matter further is what later encounters with Karl were all about, since he remembered her rampage for her and sought to remind her, after she had gone and completely lost her memory of the event. It would be tricky to write a side story about that without seeming redundant or massively spoiling the anime. The sad thing is, the Chiropterans are all pretty tragic characters, even including those monsters who have completely been robbed of their capacity to look and think humanly. Pretty much all the compatible Chiropteran Chevalier including Haji are conscious of their shapeshifting, monstrous nature, in comparison to their former human existence--they're simply tormented by their newfound natural urges to feed on humans and try and reproduce with the opposing queen (the queens of which are relatively oblivious to their inhuman qualities, having no former human life as a standard for comparison, and being raised among humans, to think that they are)--what makes the Chiropterans really, truly terrible is the humans of Cinq Flèches that 'use' the Chiropterans ant-like qualities for militaristic interests, (despite the fact that Chiropteran chevaliers can still think and lead human lives, and protest their whole situation)--even going so far as to put Chiropteran blood in food and vitamin supplements for public consumption, to experiment on the hapless populace and forcibly turn them into yet more monsters to be caged and put down. The whole series has kind of a Species-meets-Resident Evil vibe going for it, with the added layer of the protagonist having to live with finding out that she is an experimental monster who might one day revert to her true nature, despite her prior investment in loving human life.

I really love that late 90s to mid 2000s stylised, heavy on contrast art style. It's such a shame it got lost in the HD gaming era, as it made even games with average gameplay worth owning. Maybe it's just me, but these visuals really get my artistic sensibilities tingling.

@@DestroyerTriple To the anime's credit, Blood+ deals with some complicated shit, like discovering you aren't human, but having been raised believing you are one, questions about human morality and the question of the goodness of human nature, natural selection, nature vs. nurture, the ethics of biological research, bioengineering and human enhancement, living as a war survivor, living under occupation by a foreign country, adoption into a family of foreigners... and so on. The Blood+ show this game was based on was one of those anime that was pretty popular among my peers when we were teens, 'cause it was gory and weeby enough to be exciting but also, largely, relatively grounded and taking itself seriously. A good entryway into anime for people wanting something that's not _too_ out there, if not something I really think about much anymore. It's a decent teen show, you know. Dipping its toes into more serious subjects than kids shows do and reflecting some of those teen fears, but also not going completely over the edge with it. Though I think it suffered from the 50 episode runtime many shows used to have back in the 2000s, as opposed to the modest 13 they go for now all the time. It meant having all these wasteful subplots and throwaway characters inbetween the main conflict. It's nice to see some coverage on a game I knew existed but also knew basically nothing about.

The existence of this is fascinating to me. I have to say, I kind of like the way it turned out. You know, in other settings, I'm all about the punk rock creative types just completely subverting the establishment. But I think when it comes to Japanese game development, the story is more heartwarming when the two learn to work together. I'm most pleased with the fact that they approved the art style. It just works so much better than that "budget game" graphical style the generic tie-in used. I mean, it absolutely neutered the intended look of the creature design! They look like swole Mogwai from the Gremlins films. I guess it's horrifying to think of that one customer who ends up feeding them way too much just to be a contrarian?

To me this really seems like a Lynch and Dune situation. (Not in terms production history or anything though) It's a wild and restless creative with a strong style being handed a pre-existing property and trying to work within it. Blood+ has always been something of a semi-favourite of mine. It takes some time to really get going, and it has many flaws, but the characters and the story really charmed me.
