My Grandpa was a Big Band Leader in the 40's. He sang & played trumpet. That sound you heard was a trumpet player using a mute. Its a closed cone shape piece that fits into it. Easy to take in and out fast. Makes the trumpet softer.

@@catmother4214 Thank you for replying & I love what you shared!! My Grandpa raised me. He had a music room in our home & always played. He taught me to play 4 instruments. I inherited his recordings from nightclub performances. Big Band music was all I knew. Of course, being a Gen-X'er I caught the late 70's & then MTV. I have a huge appreciation for music which is why I love Jay's journey & reactions. I'm grateful you commented. I felt a little nerdy when I was younger knowing all the Big Band music. 🤣😂🤣
@larrywt656

I also was a trumpet & keyboard player in a jazz big band for a while in the 80s. Actually, this mute was a Harmon mute, not a straight mute (the cone-shaped one). A Harmon mute resembles a coffee mug with a stem in the center. The stem can be removed to make a different muted sound. There are also cup mutes (basically a straight mute with a cup on the end that faces the bell), yet another sound altogether. I also have a great appreciation for the Big Band era...along with many other genres as well. I'm from the tail end of the Baby Boomers, born in 1964, so I feel blessed to have grown up in an era that had some truly amazing music!

I can't recommend JV react to songs about sex with underage girls. It's a testament to the legitimacy of the #metoo movement that songs like Young Girl, This Girl is a Woman Now, the demeaning Woman, Woman and their other hits were performed live on TV (even the conservative Ed Sullivan show) and we're #1 hits. Imagine someone performing these songs today. Sorry but I vote thumbs down to Gary Puckett even though his voice is a treasure to listen to.

Young Girl is my favourite. It's a pity some want to censor history. Next we'll ban Lolita, and stop teaching Romero and Juliet and English Kings and Queens because the ages don't suit our sensibilities. Will the Koran be the next book banned because the wives looked mighty young. Young Girl is a man's love song, the girl isn't hurt, nobody gets touched. Play it so we can remember being dangerously in love. People who want to ban stuff can turn youtube off that day. The song is still legal to play.

Blood Sweat & Tears and Chicago were the two most famous ROCK bands who actually had brass players as members of the group, not just extra players on recordings (Earth, Wind & Fire was a funk band). That instrument that you were trying to figure out early on was a Harmon-muted trumpet. It's just an attachment that you stick in the bell of the trumpet that completely changes the sound of the trumpet. This song goes back to my elementary school days and I was a big fan. These guys really did rock! You need to check another of their great songs And When I Die.

David Clayton-Thomas was without any doubt the best singer they ever had!! These guys were pioneers mixing jazz arrangements and harmonies with like rock n roll and then add elements of funk!!

Blood Sweat & Tears: They have 9 regular members, 2 play trumpet, 1 plays saxophone and flute and 1 plays trombone. The other 5 play keyboards, guitar, bass, drums and vocals. (these 2 songs are like this one, bluesy, brassy and excellent vocals) And When I Die and Lisa Listen to Me. Lots of Brass: Hi-De-Ho and Lucretia Macevil (this one is almost all brass and no vocals). Bluesy: I Love You More Than You Will Ever Know ( you will like his voice on this one) and God Bless The Child.

You know a vocalist is amazing, when you notice how good he is even over all the musical stuff going on that never really distracts.

The original singer was Al Kooper who left after their first album. David Clayton Thomas is who you’re hearing here and most of their other hits. I saw them live when they warmed up for The Who.

Now THAT is a song, that I've always SERIOUSLY LOVED!!! Please check out Gary Puckett & The Union Gap, "This Girl Is A Woman Now", "Woman Woman", "Lady Willpower", "Young Girl" & "Over You", to name a few. This is the late 60's/early 70's. YOU'RE SURE TO LOVE!

I recall listening to & liking them as a kid. Listening today I've experienced the same reaction as yourself - A true appreciation of their brilliance. And I agree with your analogy to Earth Wind & Fire.
