Budget Boosting Agreed, I can pickup the piping, fmic, wastegate and bov, and a decent (non-ebay) turbo for a little over a grand. My problem would be tuning, my car uses the TPI setup from gm, so its run off of an ecm with a pretuned memcal. I think my next project is going to be a mkiii supra, although I haven't decided whether or not I like the 7m-gte platform more than the 1jz.

DUDE...I had a 77 280z and would have gave my left nut to have that set up. This was the best most simple, straight forward DIY how to on a budget even. Never know you could turbo a carbed motor. And compared to an EFI upgrade + turbo's it's a real budget build with big power potential. While retaining drivability.

starbattles1 Yes, I remember when I decided to go that route due to the stock fuel injection not handling the turbo set up very well. I went the blow through turbo route and I have liked that set up the best. I started with the Demon 650 blow through carb which was pretty good and eventually to the Quick fuel SS-650-BAN 4 barrel carburetor and I like it even more. I have the intake and exhaust manifolds off this Z car waiting for a custom twin turbo header which a friend of mine fabricated to fit two of my z cars which will fit any z from 1970-1983, all the L series inline sixes. It was fabricated to fit in these cars once the air conditioning compressor is removed and a few other things that are in the way for the twin turbo setup. To me no A/C is a small price to pay for a twin T04e powered L28 Z car. Once I get this new twin turbo header, I will get with my fabricator and he will start making them so we can sell them to others desiring twin turbo z cars. We will sell them on our budgetboosting ebay account where we currently sell our window stickers.

Nice job on the blow thru setup!! I had a 79 280zx I converted to turbo but kept the EFI and it was a pain to get enough fuel to the engine at higher boost levels so I ended up using hobbs switches and extra injectors to feed it enough. Detonation was always a problem until I replaced the distributer and ecu with ones from a turbo car, then I used water injection at higher boost levels to prevent detonation. Now I got an 86 4x4 Nissan pickup with a 2.4 liter 4 banger and I'm planning a blow thru setup using a t3/t4 hybred turbo and intercooler fed into a Holley 350 2 barrel that's been prepped internally for turbo use with a boost referenced power valve and pitot tube on the bowl vent to keep a positive pressure in the bowl along with an EFI fuel pump and aeromotive boost sensing regulator. I have all the parts gathered up and ready now but need to get a smaller power brake booster since the turbo won't fit in there with the stock booster.
@budgetboosting9 жыл бұрын
SuperDaveZilla I also first tried the fuel injection on my 79 and the fuel delivery had issues and that is what led to my using the blow through setup. I even ran the MAF sensor in the boost path just prior to the intake manifold so the MAF directly adjusted to boost but even that was not enough fuel delivery for boost and the low octane pump gas. Found that the blow through set up works well and will even work with the pump gas as long as the boost is not too high. Thank you for watching and look forward to some pictures of the Nissan 4x4 truck blow through when its done.

@budgetboosting9 жыл бұрын
arthur clark Yes the older cars really benefit from turbocharging. I see many old monstrous twin turbo Camaros, Corvettes, Mustangs and many others blow through the traps and very high speeds and very low times at Top Gun Raceway.
@arthurclark5639 жыл бұрын
back pressure is not considered from the point of bottom dead center but again the boast adds pressure the cylinder should test positive for vacuum if valve timing is correct likely in most of the older cars it's not as tight or correctly timed when it is the turbo is likely larger than normal
@budgetboosting9 жыл бұрын
arthur clark At idle a turbo engine will see its normal vacuum, as load is added to the engine and boost increases, vacuum will become positive pressure so having the stock vacuum advance will not benefit the older vehicles. I removed the vacuum from my electronic distributor so it is a constant and no adjustment on vacuum. I also install a boost referenced fuel pressure regulator that ensures fuel pressure rises as boost rises. When much larger turbochargers are installed, usable boost will take longer to build up and directly reflect negative vacuum and boost pressures. One way valves or breathers should be installed to ensure boost does not pressurize the valve covers or engine block. Lots of things to consider when turbocharging a non-turbo car. Its quite the adventure though.
@redmanaaron974 жыл бұрын
Blowoff* valves aren't necessary, but bypass valves in general, yes, ALWAYS run one on a boosted gasoline setup. Important tip: a blowoff valve is a specific type of bypass valve. I know stock tuning sometimes won't compensate quite correctly for a true blowoff valve [versus a stock bypass valve], but running a full on blowoff valve is undeniably safer than having no bypass at all. When the throttle plate closes under boost, if there's no bypass valve, that pressurized air has nowhere to go but back out through the turbocharger, in the wrong direction. Even if it doesn't literally cause the turbo to momentarily spin backwards, it can still mechanically stress the turbo unnecessarily. Overall good video though. Always run some sort of bypass valve on your turbocharged gasoline engine.

Thanks a lot a light bulb went off in my head when you mentioned the T connection for the oil supply. I just realized that engine oil is under pressure from the oil pump so all you have to do is tap into that pressurized oil and it will be pushed into the turbo... I used to be confused as to how turbos got fed with oil O thought maybe the turbo has a pump inside that pulls oil from the oil pan or there's gravity feeding but none of those sound like they would work.

Budget Boosting I believe I found your website with the old HKS triple deuce blow through turbo kit. I have always liked that kit ever since I saw it in Japan on an S130z with twin TD06 turbochargers on a 3.1 stroker. That car was wicked and that kit is severely hard to find. In the states Jim Cook Racing used to sell the Cartech triple weber side draft complete kit including a T04 turbocharger, external wastegates, intercooler and all the tubing and bolt ups necessary for installation for around $3500. If only those complete kits were still for sale, that company would make a fortune since there are many old Z enthusiests than there were then..... I like the HKS set up you installed, since you were running rich, a much larger turbocharger would fix that, somewhere around a T70 with ball bearing, 15-20 lbs of boost, 100 octane fuel and you would be golden.

you do realize that by not running a blow off or bypass valve when you chop the throttle you actually stall the compressor turbine in the turbo and can grenade the vanes sending aluminum shards through out your pricey engine of course unless you have a pricey billet wheel . but even then you will stall the compressor and build boost slowly between gears . a blow off valve is a must for a street turbo system
@budgetboosting9 жыл бұрын
corsomike1 One, I never chop the throttle, Two, Turbochargers made strong with good quality, have no issues, they are designed to deal with great extreme forces acted upon them, if not, they are not good turbochargers. I have even run low costing ebay turbochargers without blow off valves such in the Red 300zx turbo, no issues, great throttle response. The black buick has no throttle response issues, in fact its a hard charger on the throttle and of course it has no blow off valve and never did from the factory either. Three, My throttle plate is never all the way closed, most have spaces on the bottom to allow air or boost to retain idle characteristics, so most throttle plates are never completely closed.
@corsomike19 жыл бұрын
Budget Boosting yep fatiguing the metal of the compressor isn't bad and garret ,mitsubishi, holset are not quality turbochargers ? when you stall the compressor at 100,000 or higher rpm the vanes flex , ungulate and twist . your right that isn't bad . and yes back in the day they didn't use bypass or blow off valves nor did they use inter-coolers but they learned from that haven't they just because it can be done doesn't mean it should and of course the throttle plate stays open a little or the engine would die ( come on ) you just don't get it ... and probably never will .
@budgetboosting9 жыл бұрын
corsomike1 The 1987 buick had a garrett intercooler from the factory. I am not against blow off valves, I believe they are not always necessary. Some turbochargers such as the small ball bearing high spinning type can benefit from a blow off valve. The large big single turbochargers such as the T88-34D that I ran on my R32 Skyline GT-R did not benefit from a blow off valve, and I do not run them in that big single set up. So there are times for the blow off valve and times I do not run the blow off valve. The bottom line is they are not always needed, some set ups good, some set ups not so good. Like I have said time and time again, it is the tuner's choice and I do not knock any tuner for using them or not using them. I have always and still believe that they are not 100% necessary for every single turbocharger setup across the board, just some of them. I do get it but they do have their place and their place is in some turbo set ups, not all of them. I pick and choose what set ups of mine get blow off valves and the ones that do not. That is called specific tuning for specific types of acceleration depending on what you will do with your turbocharged car or truck. Most turbo failures occur due to 1. not using an aircleaner, which destroys the compressor and turbine, 2. Not changing oil often since the oil is shared with the engine. 3. Running the turbocharger really hard at high temperatures without giving it sufficient cool down at idle before shutting engine off. 4. Engine running too lean with cheap low octane fuel which heats turbocharger too hot and elongates turbine and compressor blades which will fail. 5. Too much or not enough oil flow in turbo bearings which will lead it to fail. I have run many Garrett, Holset and Mitsubishi TD series turbines without any issues with or without blow off valves. Its all about how well everything works together and how well the set up is taken care of that determines how long turbochargers will last. My 1987 Buick Turbo T Garrett turbocharger lasted 28 years and the car was mechanically well cared for. There is no almighty answer for every turbo setup for every vehicle so that means that blow off valves are NOT needed for every single turbo set up.
@donaldsullivan69798 жыл бұрын

Hello sir can i use a standard N/A carb in conjunction with a turbo? i can see you are using a well made turbo carb. thanks.
@danmackintosh63255 жыл бұрын
Sorry I'm late to the party, but you can use a standard carb in two ways. Firstly isn't so easy (unless it's fairly commonly done with that model of carb for example SU carbs), seal up any vents/throttle shafts etc and find a way of venting the float bowl as well as being able to pressurise it on boost. *Second & much easier* but less tidy maybe is if you build the whole carb into a plenum chamber. This means the whole carb inside and out sees boost and thus no excess pressure is put on it. You then only need to seal up the point the throttle cable and fuel line enter, just make sure to use a linear fuel pressure regulator with the plenum set up so that your fuel pressure stays at the correct level relative to the boost rather than the boost overcoming the fuel pressure causing the car to lean out.
@bryanroupe86465 жыл бұрын
How the hell are you going to say building a boost box for a carb is easier than $50 worth of mods that anyone can do in a day to any Holley carb easier ? To the original poster if you haven't already bought a blow through there's a right up by hanger18. Not everything listed is necessary unless your making 18psi plus. all it does it slightly wear the thrust plate in the turbo core and to tell is when a turbo shaft can be pushed back and forth(towards each turbine) this test is not the up and down play that ever knob talks about there is a test to check for play up and down on the compressor wheel and that is to hold the nut and pull up and down(towards each side/top and bottom of the cold side/compressor housing) however every turbo new or old has play this is normal and this is because there is very little oil in it when you add oil this play will go to almost nothing as the oil and its pressure closes the gap a good turbo will have some play but they should not hit the housing if so they are no good in worse case it will bend or snap off blades/fins of the wheels bovs with out them you can worst case is they snap the shaft(snap the compressor or turbine wheel off) this hardly happens but does happen
@jjmccloud5 жыл бұрын
Bottom line....you don't HAVE TO have 1.....but, it is a little more wear on the turbo on low boost systems. Now on systems with more (fun stuff) boost it WILL damage the turbo a lot faster then you'd like it to and cutting the life of it by a fair amount. But your right you don't have to have 1 if u can't or don't wanna afford to put 1 in but it is always recommend! Not to mention if your running a lot of boost and no waste valve it can blow something up. Seen it first hand lol its kinds like wearing a seat belt....do you have to wear 1 to drive...no, and u may go forever without an accident where u needed to be wearing 1 or u could never have an accident, or....you could go out on your first drive and bam ...should've put that belt on I guess lol....everyone loves to gamble right???? Would I put 1 on? Yes....would I drive mine here and there until I could get 1 put on? Yes...long term you should have 1 installed, the cons just outweigh the pros no matter the odds

Fuel air mixture can be done by the carburetor jetting process and by way of a boost referenced fuel pressure regulator, I made videos on both those subjects you can watch.

Budget Boosting yea i did watched all of the videos related to the questions i've asked i recently made the oil connection ( connector and a return to the oil pan ) tomorrow i will fit the turbo compressor to the manifold as for the AFR i will get a gauge to measure the lean and rich process and start jetting it until it get the suitable ratio i got the fuel jets as the following as a standard factory 115 for 1st gate which is primary and 125 for the secondary throttle .. i replaced the secondary with 135 jet is there anything else i can do to my carburetor ? and thx for replying ^_^

you need a blow off valve if you are running higher boost pressures.

I love that car. It does give me a Mad Max vibe. You just need more kill switches and gages. You need a machine gun as well

I was under the impression that if you don't have a blow off valve all that happens is the excess charge just goes back through the exhaust, via internal wastegate? Idk never claimed to know it all, correct me if I'm wrong. I've owned a couple Cars that didn't have factory blow off valves, one being a Mitsubishi Starion or conquest tsi. Lol I actually owned 5 of those over the years. Like I was saying I always thought that's what the waste gate flapper was for.

My god, these kids and their blow off valve beliefs... Good marketing from the bov companies have them all thinking they must have, and buy one or they will hurt their car..:) Thanks for all the good videos Budget, I appreciate the info your sharing with all of us.....keep em coming!

Ray Dolinger Right, they didn't grow up seeing turbo powered engines evolve like we did. From the 1965 Chevy Covair,H-6 draw through turbo, the 1978 Buick Sport Coupe Regal 3.8 draw through turbo V6, the 1980 Pontiac Trans Am Turbo 4.9 turbo, draw through V-8, 1980-1983 Datsun/Nissan 280zx turbo 2.8 straight six fuel injected turbo, 1984-1988 Nissan 300zx 3.0 turbo V-6, and many more. All those cars never had blow off valves and no turbo car I have seen had a blow off valve from the factory. A lot of them had relief valves to prevent overboosting engines when the internal wastegate rubber tubing disconnected or wastegate failure. Kids these days do not know the history of turbocharging, how it evolved into what it is today. Thank you again for watching.

Its not marketing it's a fact if your running less than 10psi then no a BOV may not absolutely necssary but get above 12psi and compressor stall is real and damages the compressor wheel over time. I've been involved since the days when turbos were all draw thru. I remember seeing a 68 camaro w/468 running twins drawing thru a 1050 dominator make god like power 850 on the dyno. but it was a mess to drive and a hot house flower only good? for drag racing turbo lag was measured in secounds as in 5 then it spooled like a light switch nothing, nothing ,OMG. It was a waste land none knew anything few guys running Offys at indy and some old vets from WWII with fighter plane experience. One was to small the other to big same for the turbos. It was all cut and paste with crutches and no cheap welders migs cost a couple of K tig was just not an option, Since they were draw thru one back fire could destroy everything or even kill you all the intake plumbing back to the intake inlet was filled with combustable mix big boom sharpnel and other pcs flying everywhere and direction.

roger depew I have a blow off valve on the Blow through carbureted 280zx car and it runs fine. I do not have one on my fuel injected 300zx turbo, using a budget friendly TO4e ebay turbocharger and run around 18 psi daily driving, runs great and reliable. Turbochargers that fail are for issues not related to lack of blow off valve use. They usually fail due to foreign object damage, no air cleaner, dirty contaminated or poor oil change schedule, not allowing the car to idle down for several minutes to allow hot oil in the bearings to cool down before shutdown. Most people just drive the car hard, avoid preventative maintenance, park and shut off the engine and wonder why their turbochargers fail. Many companies do capitalize from these failures and conveniently relate them to the lack of blow off valve use. Draw through turbocharging, you cannot reasonably use a blow off valve due to fuel and air released in the engine compartment when the valve opens. Honestly, a well made turbocharger is built to withstand very extreme heat and pressure forces and one that fails for some surging is really not a well built turbocharger. The 1984 though 1987 Buick GNX, Grand National, T-type series turbo regals boosted 15 psi stock and many increased the boost much higher. None of them ever had blow off valves from the factory and very few ever installed them or even heard of them in the 80's. I know of many people today still running the original 27 plus year old turbo Buicks with the original Garrett turbochargers still laying down competitive drag times and great daily driving cars as well. Many Nissan and Toyota turbo cars I tuned, drove and enjoyed in Japan did not have factory blow off valves in their cars and I drove them hard and they performed great and reliably. The above is the reason I made blow off valves, the truth video. I am one that does not believe the hype about blow off valves, I have had them on some cars, and not used them on others and honestly had no genuine need to. Its always up to the owner and the tuner of the engine to make that decision.

Blow off valve is only needed if running over 7ish psi . Wastegate is way more important .

Without a blow off valve, when the carb butterflies close on deceleration, the turbo boost spikes, and can "deadhead" the turbo. Turbos don't like going from spinning at 15k rpm to a dead stop in less than a second.
@budgetboosting7 жыл бұрын
A turbo charger will never dead stop from lack of a blow off valve. It will gradually stop due to reduced exhaust flow when accelerator is released, the shaft between turbine and compressor rotors is direct, and they spin at exactly the same speed. Even at idle, the turbine and compressor spin, so there is no way unless the bearings fail that the turbine would just dead stop.
@Splungers7 жыл бұрын
Yes it can. Its not about the exhaust. When the throttle closes coming down from high engine RPM, the boost from the turbo to the throttle shaft is trapped and the pressure spikes, with nowhere to go- causing extreme pressure in the inlet tubing before the carb. I have actually seen the turbine stop when a blowoff valve failed on my sons drag car, the Hyper Bug. Look up the car on KZfaq.

In Japan where I used to own a 1992 Nissan Skyline R32 GTR I had a big single T88-34d turbocharger with external wastegate running 28 lbs of boost, no blow off valve for several years. Most tuners in Japan with large big single turbochargers do not use blow off valves. Smaller ball bearing turbochargers I can see running one to slow one down more gradually. There are many factors involved for a turbocharger to fail. If it locked up, it is due to a bearing failure or balance problem leading to the blades striking the housing and seizing. When tuning any engine, throttle plate needs to be open enough for decent idle which spins the turbine. When extreme forces are exerted to a turbocharger, heat, lack of cool oil, etc., turbochargers can fail, I have never seen one fail strictly because of a blowoff valve, there are always other factors other than just the valve that made it fail. I have even run cheap ebay turbochargers for up to 8 years without a blow off valve without any failures. That says a lot. Buick Grand Nationals run turbochargers from the factory without blow off valves and I still have the 30 year old turbocharger that was removed in good working order. It is your opinion but I do not believe it and nobody will convince me otherwise.

Like the idea... how much boost do run? I own 71 240z with l28et on megasquirt... the cost of your Demon carburetor was about the cost of megasquirt standalone.
@jamendetvarjukul4 жыл бұрын
Do you need an intercooler? I read some suggesting it will run better without since the fuel will mix better with air at higher temp and the boost isn't high enough that temp will be a problem.

when your running without blow off valve and step up throttle when turbo spinning fast, boostin fast moving air and then throttle valve closes and fast movin air hits throttle valve and bounces back and forth betveen turbo and throttle valve, the sound 7:38 belongs here

johanijohani This particular engine in this video does have a blow off valve. My red 300zx turbo, and Buick Regal Turbo T do not have blow off valves. Thanks for watching.
