In this video: Big block engine swap components and tips for a 1972-1993 Dodge D100, W100, etc.; How to ID a flywheel for a 318/360, or a neutral balanced engine or external balanced engine; A look at Dodge truck header fitment issues; and much, much more.
This blue 1974 Dodge W100 4x4 pickup has been sitting in the background of every video shot outside my shop for the last year. Long time viewers may recall that I sold this truck, and then bought it back after the original 318 exploded. While I had planned some sort of small block replacement, my friend David (the truck's previous owner) bought it back instead. David seems to have a thing for 383s, so on today's episode, we're going to drop his freshly built big block in the truck and make it do cool stuff. I'm sure that will go perfectly.

The magic fender holes were so handy! I used to store all kinds of shit down in there, it was a great spot. I kept a gallon of oil and gallon of coolant on one side and a box full of random “in case dodge stuff” on the other side. Nothing ever fell out 👍

My dad had a 2wd ClubCab in green (of course) that I converted to an automatic for him in the 80's. It was a nice truck, albeit with probably the only B&M StarShifter equipped A904 in existence. Great old 318, never missed a beat. I'd love to have that truck back now. Better yet, I'd love to have *him* back now, come to think of it. - Ed on the Ridge

Dude, that ratchet strap stuff got a good laugh as it's near and dear to my heart since I work alone. I was doing a Ranger V8 swap and you had to spin that drivetrain around like a yoga instructor who be stripping in the evenings. Cheap ratchet came undone and smacked me right in the hand, at I least I caught it on video.

I have a 75 Club cab W100 short bed version. B5 blue with white roof. It is AT, full time NP 203. Any early club cab W truck is rare, and the short beds are super rare. The only place to look this up is the Standard Guide to American Truck.

I recommend Club Cab for my patients that chew gum and drive first gen Dodges and are over 5 ft 8 since the bench seats are bolt upright in the standard cab version to try to make up for the lack of length of the cab. For Second Gen Dodge pickups,, standard cab is fine.

Oh, the steering wheel back in those days was so big in diameter, I put on a Grant wheel with adapter. The factory wheels were big for people that might possibly buy the truck with manual steering. I have a factory steering column can for factory Tuff wheel, rim blow, or E body two spoke but the can won't fit on W series steering columns. Normally, I avoid aftermarket "kitsch" car parts. I notice you had the factory wheel on your 70 Satellite. The same one that came on my 70 GTX. Not a bad looking wheel, though the horn button sections doesn't stay tight, but the diameter was more than I wanted. I put on my can and used the three wheels mentioned above.

An older lady acquaintance showed me her 2018 Ram ProMaster, which is an American version of a European delivery van. That is, Fiat. She likes it because it has room for her big dogs in the back. But I had never seen or heard of it. She didn't even know if it was front wheel drive (it is). It has a Chrysler V6, the same one you got in a Challenger, that has 280 hp net. The same as my first and all time favorite Mopar, the 72 Road Runner GTX. That's kind of humbling. So, I'd like to see you get a hold one of those and wring it out. It doesn't have a lot of style , so I have to guess five year old ones aren't in much demand. There are heavier duty versions with taller roofs and longer wheel bases, but I'd bet even the smallest one would at least match in capacity , say , an old B series van and even the strongest of the Voyager and Town and Country mini vans.

@@DeadDodgeGarage I read that you thought that the ProMaster is "hilarious" and I thought you put your finger right on it, and agreed, but then I saw I'd read it wrong. I totally agree on the Challenger being hard to resist. I live in so cal, so they are not affordable in any trim level, though. I dream of having a big tire small wheel Challenger. No 20in's for me. 20's. What were they thinking??? I once commented on a C body board "The Crossfire is so cool, I'd get one even without an engine." "Spoken like a true C Body guy." was one response.

Every 435 truck I have owned I would start in 2nd under normal driving. I don't know the engines history but have had thrust bearing issues causing noise from crank walk when depressing the clutch
@DeadDodgeGarage
@DeadDodgeGarage 3 ай бұрын
Crank walk is what I was checking for with that camera shot. I didn’t see anything discernible so I moved on. I’ve had super worn thrust bearings that didn’t make that kind of sound. I used to always take off in first with the 435. It seemed to me that less clutch slip was better. But I got over that eventually. The other factor is that the two trucks I had were powered by a super worn out 360 and a crappy running slant. With this torquey 383 and whatever rear end is in this thing, first is entirely useless.

@DeadDodgeGarage Yeah, that helps. I like to find a First Gen Cummins "shell" that someone robbed the engine out, of and swap the master cylinder and axles out. Even the early 3:08 gears work well with the manual transmission if you don't put giant tires on it. Plus, you can't hardly break anything with a sock V-8, NP 205 and Dana 60 and 70 combination. A big block, 4 speed and 3:08 gears give a good cruising speed. I'm not a rock crawler for the 1.96:1 gear reduction is totally adequate.

@DeadDodgeGarage
@DeadDodgeGarage 2 ай бұрын
That appears to be a good bit of car for the money… I don’t like the red stripe at all, and it’s missing the behind grille black out. I didn’t decode the vin but I’m 100% sure it’s a 318 car someone upgraded with a 340. If you ask me, it’s pretty dang cool. It’s very green… but from what I can see it looks well done. Now, it’s been fully repainted, so I would be looking very, very closely for rust repairs. It’s likely not a case of if it has any, but how extensive they were. If the work was done well it doesn’t bother me at all. That purple car that I drove back from Chicago was bought by a dealer who is trying to get $69k for it. Compared to that, this looks like a fairly decent buy.

@@DeadDodgeGarage thank you for checking it out for me, a pre-inspection by a professional, I’m going to look at it and see if it’s as nice in person, first thing I would do is get a heat gun and remove that stripe it’s ugly. These guys always price the cars sky high and then they always come down in price so I’m sure they could move down from that 62 or 63,000. I have a Monte Carlo SS for trade in and they sell those cars for over 20 grand. After removing the strip I would drop it off to you for a 440 swap, of course payment would be made in gold bars and a mint 340 engine. Is this charger power steering?

4" lift and a set of 33s and it's a party. 383s in trucks are torque monsters over 440s in my humble opinion and I have had both. You got a bad throw out bearing. I have had new ones act stupid like that. It goes away or will start to squeal at some point but not your problem 😂 if you would have dropped the clutch it would melt the tires btw. May want to test that out. It's a u joint test lol oh and I had a truck with a weird rub noise once and the water pump pulley was hitting the crank pulley. Just a thought. See you and me seem to sell one and 2 emerge. Hellboy reference samil. Purple hornies are cool but loud as fuk. I have a set somewhere

I’d be worried about the lil driveshaft between the transmission and the case leaving the party on the clutch drop. I’ve heard that happens…

Sure, but then you have to take the hood off - and later, you have to put it back on…meanwhile I’ve done countless engine installs with the hood in place. It’s the way I prefer to operate.

Not great but they will work get the med. size that will work on a Charger they have a elastic band around the bottom that you could bungy to the bottom of the car some were. Leaving that Charger out in the rain is a sin.

Why did you say the 383 is an easier fit than a 440 ? Aren't they basically the same block with deck height exception. I thought they would both fit the same. Please elaborate.
@DeadDodgeGarage
@DeadDodgeGarage 3 ай бұрын
The lower deck height means the 383 is shorter vertically, the valve covers are closer to the crankshaft, and the engine is also narrower overall. The brake booster interference problem is therefore much worse on a 440. In a car, the simple act of changing spark plugs is much easier on the 383 because you can get around the engine more easily. To me it’s just a nicer package overall.

What is it inside the shop that you think is junk, though? My Dodge Hemis? My 340? My 360? The other 340? My 440s?! My speed parts collection? My ‘69 Charger? Ok, yeah, it’s junk - but still. I sell, junk and scrap stuff that is extra and needs to go all the time. I have had a couple other people working in the shop lately and end up with a huge tool and garbage mess. I collect, clean, and reset tools as often as I can. But no matter what I do, the shop is still cluttered. It kinda looks like the inside of my head does. Anyway, I’m actually working on new storage solutions and a fresh work bench area right now. Can’t hurt.
