I can't believe people are STILL moaning about Blu-ray being "too expensive." Just how cheap do you think it SHOULD be? 50 cents for the movies and 5 bucks for the player???
Let's put things in perspective...AGAIN. But this time seeing how things have changed over the past 2 years. And the past TEN years.
Check out this Best Buy online flyer from 1999 to see how little DVD prices have REALLY changed:

You know thinking about it, DVD;s just got cheaper and Blu-rays just took over their prices. Some blu-rays are 8 and 10 dollars brand new. And like you said amazing PQ and Audio sounds like a fucking deal to me. SHIT! 200 for T2 on LD! Haha Im a fan boy ot T2, but I could of never paid that.

Something you did not mention, and I was a little surprised that you didn't, was the cost of VHS when it first came out. When studios began releasing VHS tapes commercially in the late 70's/early 80's, they were $80 or more. That's $80 for crappy VHS in 1980.

You need to shop around. At my local Barnes and Nobles, a Blu-Ray will run $30-$50 (I've seen them for as much as $60 if it's a 3D Blu-Ray), yet literally a 30-second walk to the nearby Wal-Mart and Coconuts, and the same movies cost $10-$30. Same applies to DVDs (DVDs are just as much as certain stores)- it depends where you shop. I've got new release Blu-Rays for cheaper than the DVD price. ($20 for Star Trek, whereas the DVD cost $25 for example) Go to more than just Wal-Mart.

What amuses me: The 32'' HD-TV I bought last year cost LESS than the last standard-deff TV we bought before upgrading (which was a 27'' Sony, so it was smaller and lower quality). AND the PS3 I bought last year which I use to play Blu-Rays (and DVDs) cost LESS than the first ever DVD player we bought. AND if people actually shopped around, they'd find that Blu-Ray discs aren't nearly as expensive as they'd like to think. Most Blu-Ray discs go for $10-$30, which is the same as DVD pricing.

There are two ways that televisions scan images. Interlace and Progressive. Interlace scanning divides the image into odd and even lines of resolution and scans them separately but fast enough so you don't see the seperation. Progressive scanning scans the entire image at once. Theaters run film stock through a projector at around 23 frames per second. There is no interlacing at all. The projector flashes the entire frame just like progressive scanning.

Actually as of right now, optical technology is done. We've reached the peak. Blu-ray is it for now. We've gone from infrared laser to red laser to blue laser. We've spanned the visible light spectrum, there's nothing else to use so for now, this is it.

I absolutely agree. My parents had to replace their TV and movies that were destroyed in a flood. Yesterday, they got a 42'' HD-TV for $400, a Blu-Ray player for $80 and for $20 got the 3-Disc edition of "The Muppets", new, online. They spent about $500. For reference, they spent just as much for a smaller standard-deff TV and DVD player about 12 years ago. If you shop around, prices are great. I've paid more for DVD special editions in the past than I ever have for a comperable Blu-Ray.

Blu-Ray prices are already comparable to DVD. I was checking out some local stores, as well as Amazon, and by shopping around, I've been able to find Blu-Rays for about the same price as DVD, and generic players for less than $100. And HD TV's are pretty cheap as well. Ex. I bought the 3-Disc Blu-Ray of "Star Trek" (2009) for $20 at Wal-Mart, whereas the inferior 2-Disc DVD cost $25 at the same store. It's just a matter of shopping around, but there's no denying, Blu-Ray IS affordable now.

Cut to now and you can get a premium Blu Ray player (not 4k) for under 100 bucks, but now you can get them in the 50 buck range for a fairly good one, and even lower if it's an external one for a pc. When 4k Blu ray players saturate the market, the price for the 1080p ones are going to go down even further which how low it will be then I can't even fathom at this point. I'm content with 1080p for now because one that tech will be expensive (understandably so), and recently I upgraded from a display between 720p and 1080, to full on 1080p and the distance between me and the screen is good for my personal movie enjoying experience. Since my new display can be connected to my pc, I added a custom refresh rate to 48 hertz to make sure the movie frame rate is compatible and it makes the enjoyment that much better!.

The prices are rapidly dropping, there's no doubt about that. It's just this need to go online to upgrade firmware that consurns me, but i guess if worst comes to the worst, you can always contact the manulfacturer and they could send you a disk with the update specifications. This should come in handy for people who can't go online, or at least not through their players. You may be interested to hear Shaun that this computer has a Blu-ray disk drive.

Blu-ray discs have come down in price a lot this year. The format would have taken off quicker if it had been as cheap from the beginning. Business does take advantage of early adopters. The buyers know they are paying a premium, but they accept that because of the thrill of being part of the first wave. Digital media isn't anything new, or very exciting anymore. Blu-ray should be cheap and cheerful.

My mom bought our living room tv at kmart for $400.00 to $500.00 I cant remember if its 720p or 1080p but its a 46 inch tv though. I bought my blue ray player on black Friday years ago for only $36.00 its an lg my mom bought the blue ray player for the living room for $98.00 its a sony so these are going down in price and definitely worth the price.

I enjoyed this rant, and you make some great points. I want to help clarify the meaning of market saturation though. Market saturation is the point where a product and substitutes have been diffused so thoroughly that power shifts from the sellers to the buyers: i.e., once everyone has a microwave, the demand for microwaves decreases.

It's inevitable that pretty anyone that isn't homeless is going to have an HDTV eventually, so that's not a problem. You can already get free HD channels with an antenna, just like analog, so that's not a problem. And who says you need to record only HD to blu-ray? It's just a 25/50 gig disc. You could put a whole season of a tv show on that in SD. Plus blu-ray can already be expanded to 500 gigs. It's going to match up eventually, just like DVD did.

With two VCRs I can cut out the commercials in about the same time as it took to record the show. With a computer, it would take 2x the time (1x to record from VHS to computer, 0.9x to finally get a program to load the resulting file and not crash, 0.1x to actually make the edits). Also, VHS tape lasts at least 20 years (I sometimes transfer video from VHS to DVD for people, at least one of those tapes was mae in 1989), while a recordable DVD does not and I don't want to rerecord.

It's unbelievable really how amazingly cheap the hd stuff has become. I remember back in 1999 I believe we "upgraded" to dvd. We bought a 32" CRT TV with DVD player for 3000 bucks. I remember around 2005 47" plasma TVs, 720p, were around 11000 dollars. Now you can buy a blu-ray player + 64" 1080p plasma TV for 2000 bucks or less. Heck, you can buy high quality 65" 4K!!!! LCDs for 5000 or less.

Reasonable people don't expect a new technology to be cheap right off the bat, but it is fair to say that expense is based on one's budget too. That said, I am all for purchasing movies in the best possible quality available as long as one can afford to.

Bought my Blu-ray player for $48 LAST YEAR. This year, a newer model based on last years model was on sale for $38 for Black Friday. Mine is still going strong even though it's a mass produced model. I've got the first two Riddick movies on Blu Ray for about $30 in a single package , and that came with a coupon for Oblivion on Blu Ray which comes bundled with the DVD and is normally priced at $20. So I picked that up too. Last night I bought the Gladiator on Blu Ray for about $4 - the extended version. Blu Ray is pretty damn affordable here in 2013. I won't even buy DVDs anymore because Blu Ray is so affordable now.

I just upgraded to Blu Ray 2 weeks ago (never was much of a movie guy till recently) the player cost $50 which may be expensive, until you realize how cheap the Blu-Ray disks are. I paid 10$ for The Hobbit 5$ The Dark Knight, 10$ for scarface, hell the most expensive Blu-Ray disk/s own was 20$ and that was the Blu-Ray 4 pack of the TMNT movies (Guilty pleasure of mine).

Killagoku PC I remember getting the Dark Knight Trilogy on Blu-Ray for Christmas of 2012 (the year I bought the player). It was on sale as a gift set for about $30. Really good price for all three. Spent over $20, however, on Fast and Furious 6 shortly after its release. We have Fast Five on Blu-Ray as well, and the rest of the franchise on DVD. I'm actually starting to sell off most of my DVDs now.

Why people don't really think about DVD players being expensive is because the PS2 came with a DVD player, and so did other DVD players. I think the same thing applies to the Blu Ray players. Because the PS3's price dropped so much in such a short amount of time, most Blu Ray player costs went down in price, too.

The cuts on my VCR are nice, meaning that there is no transition "effect", but the downside is that I can't do very accurate cuts (within about half a second) and cannot redo a cut with the one VCR method. But I don't need to rerecord the videos once in a while, this is a big plus for me. The newest LTO generation puts 800GB on one tape, but the drives are quite expensive and the tape is too fast for me (up to 120MB/s). The tape has a minimum speed below which the tape drive wears out faster.

Another question (not to meant to attack but out of curiosity) - What would be the initiative for people to buy products on Blu-Ray that they already have on DVD? There are also case like Robotech with Tommy Yune himself saying that it would almost be pointless to transfer the TV to Blu-Ray because it had been cleaned to best of their ability. I figure this would be case with a couple of older films and television shows.

A good deinterlacing algorithm will make a smooth 50 frame per second video from a 50 field per second video. The only downside is that it will have a bit lower resolution than a real 50 frame per second video, but take up only half the space.
@Pentium100MHz
@Pentium100MHz 15 жыл бұрын
Why it would be inefficient? I was talking about deinterlace while watching the video, the deinterlaced result does not get saved anywhere. When I want to watch the tape again, the program wil deinterlace it again for my monitor. Also there are hardware devices thad do that - they are called line doublers. As for computer video, google DScaler and TomsMoComp deinterlacing algorithm (there are also others).

I think the average consumer is happy with DVD quality as they were with VHS and I just think Bluray needs to be cheaper so the DVD buyers will make the change to the higher quality format which they either don't seem to understand or they just don't care to own. 50FPS progressive video takes 2x space as a 25FPS progressive video or a 50Hz interlaced video. 50Hz interlaced is smoother than 25fps progressive (if it was filmed as such to begin with and not converted from a progressive source). While my monitor cannot display 576i (too low horizontal frequency), DScaler deinterlaces really well and video on my VHS tapes look good and smooth. When I watch a DVD (24/25fps progressive) I notice that the motion is not as smooth. My monitor can do 1080i though.

Zaranyzerak, please give me your advice.. I just bought on Amazon a blu ray player (Toshiba BDX5300). I've seen them as low as $70 on Ebay and I paid $230 for mine. The reason mine was more is that it has been "unlocked" (modified to play all region dvd and all region blu ray). I don't have many overseas releases (maybe 1 or 2) but to me it's comforting knowing that I CAN buy ANY disc and be able to play it, but is that comfort worth the difference of over a hundred bucks...

Same can be said for 4K resolution. 4K TVs were major expensive when they first came out in like 2013? But on amazon I seen a Samsung 40-inch 4K TV for $697.99. But I want a 55-inch, and that was $997.99. Close to 1000 but it will go down and probably go down fast.

The problem is you either need to have a phone line connected or ethernet, or it has wireless capacity and at the moment not everywhere has wireless. It's still fairly new and it certanly hasen't been perfected, especially not during severe weather conditions. So they need to improve on certain areas before they can concentrate on the hardware.

I do agree that a lot of DVDs are getting cheaper and same goes for the blu-ray discs. But there are some cases where a publisher of some popular dvds (Ex: Bandai Entertainment) closes down and stops production of the DVDs (Ex: Lucky Star) the prices of the DVDs will be sold at a higher price then normal price point they were sold at. (Ex: 60$ to 80$)

You are right about the 3 year! Within three years the prices and choices have changed so much. That now for $1000 you are set! You got a nice HD television not to big and a nice blu-ray player. You are set! The prices of blu-rays as media are also settling. Still more expensive then DVD yes but it isn't that far of anymore. I find blu-ray discs have gone relative cheap this fast. Yeah for Blu-ray! Yeah for such a quick time in what the market settles. Yeah for decent prices :)

I was talking about a stand alone TBC. Anyway, my digital camcorder can digitize analog video, but the result looks worse than if I just used my TV tuner. The camcorder gets the aspect ratio wrong (but only by a bit) and I have to stretch the video, also the video quality is lower than is with my TV tuner. If I saved video as DV-AVI (~11GB/hour), then LTO tapes would cost way more than VHS tapes (per hour of video). Also, the one VCR method is still the fastest.

I was actually looking at blu-ray players a few days ago, the prices weren't that bad they were like $50 - $100 or so. You can't really bit*h about it anymore and I found something I didn't think I'd ever see...a VHS/Blu-ray player

Would have been funny if you mentioned that those $2,000 DVD players had huge compatibility problems and couldn't be updated. A couple years after those first players, double-layer discs started coming out and they couldn't play. Eventually, almost every release would be on a double-layer disc and those early adopters had to purchase new players.

TBC is quite expensive, but is on my list (or maybe I'll buy a professional VCR with TBC included). Hard drives may not be as reliable as tapes, since a hard drive is a complex and if one part fails (for example the motor), the data is inaccessible, if my tape drive failed I could just get a new tape drive and still have all my data. Also, it's unknown how long can a hard drive sit on a shelf before failing. Hard drives are also more sensitive to shock than a tape, but not by much.

What are you talking about no orientation? DVD's are 480i, that's interlaced. And laserdiscs were completely interlaced. In fact all tv since the 30's has been interlaced until now.
@Pentium100MHz
@Pentium100MHz 15 жыл бұрын
Depending on the source I would take 50Hz interlaced than 24/25fps progressive. The only condition is that the source must be the same. That's why I have set my SD camera to interlaced scan instead of progressive, it has smoother motion while not taking up twice the space.

Furthermore, DVD players were anywhere between $699 and $999, but that's all they played! PS3 was $599 for a player that seven different disc formats: Blu Ray, PS3 Blu Ray Games, PS2 games DVD or CD type, DVD'S, PS1 Games, and CD's.That's a tremedous value for the price.

Would you say an average consumer like me who enjoys HD movies on a 32" 720p LCD should be satisfied, for now at least? I know I'm not getting full 1080p picture quality, but on a 32" TV, it's not a must, is it?

In the U.K. a new release blu Ray is about £15 a new release dvd is about £10 I can honestly say that £5 for 1080p hd is well worth it and that’s before you get to the fact that if you watch it and think well that was shit you can generally get way more for a used blu Ray than a used dvd

I was surprised at the current price of that set based on what the DVD's went for in the past, at this very moment it can be bought on sale for under fifty, that is not a bad price at all for a Star Trek Blu-Ray season set.

Naw, Amazon and BJ's. Best Buy's catalogue of blu-rays that they carry in store AND online is getting smaller and smaller to the point that you're not likely to find anything released prior to the last year or two. And prices keep going up. I can get two top of the line gorgeous quality blu-rays loaded with extras for only $20 at BJ's. So why do I and many others keep going to Best Buy? Loyalty I guess. Long time costumers just naturally hunt there. They ain't getting any new business, for sure!

VHS is the same I have an official release video cassette from the early 80's with an £80 price tag on it! People forget that VHS was expensive to buy in the early 80's...it was one of the reasons people waited to record films from TV or rent from Blockbuster. Blue Ray disks will get cheaper and as for TV's pretty much you can only get HD ready in the UK now. So soon everyone will be HD ready.

I have a hard time believing your first DVD player in 1998 only cost about $200 and that the first three DVDs were 12.99. We weren't able to get a DVD player until 2000, and it cost about $200 then, plus $20-$30 per DVD. It doesn't seem to fit in with the facts, unless you somehow got it at a massive black-friday sale or something.

@lastswordfighter Do you honestly think that the sounds will be so much louder in HD that they'll make you go deaf (i'm guessing you meant deaf). HD sound doesn't mean LOUDER, it means there's higher quality audio so it sounds CLEARER. Also, Blu Ray also has what's called seamless branching. It allows say for instance, Star Trek the original series, you can pick and choose between the original effects or the new effects WHILE you're watching the show.
