Fir not pines. Blue grouse live and eat fir needles not pine. You need to focus on fir trees.

Those were both dusky grouse. Sooty grouse live on the cost. Just because there is a band or not isn’t the only determining factor. I shoot them in southern Utah every year and we only have dusky. You might want to do a little research on them.

Sootys are the ones with the gray tipped tail (dipped in soot). Great birds though, glad that you got both in the same general area

Actually both are different subspecies of dusky grouse.

Cowboy upland is correct. Sooty Grouse are only found near the west coast in BC, Washington, Oregon etc. There aren't even any in Idaho, let alone farther east in Wyoming. There are different variations of the tailband in Dusky grouse (most have it while some populations do not)

You made it sound like a 20 ga and 7.5s make a “spread pattern”. Are you sure you didn’t mean having more open chokes in your gun give you the spread pattern?

Mark, new subscriber, just wondering, is that a paid guide you have along with you or just a friend that knows the area? Nice shooting by the way. I wish I could have gone out hunting like that with my dad. Only happened a few times, but I loved every minute of it with him.

Roger I firmly believe in hunting with the best outfitters because they know the areas and my success is always higher. However my guides likely always become my friends. Thanks for subscribing.

very nice video. what brand of gun? I wondered about cartridge brand, gram and number, master hunter ...?
@MarkVPeterson

The brand is Benelli and Mark's gun is a 828U chambered in 12 gauge and using Kent Cartridge #6 or #7's. Here are links to those items: Gun - www.benelliusa.com/shotguns/828-u-shotguns | Ammo - kentcartridge.com/us/shotshell/ultimate-fast-lead

Mark, thank you for this video. I’m somewhat new to the grouse thing but have been a big game hunter my whole life. I see grouse on and off but have yet to define areas or vegetation that hold these grouse. Any advice you could give? Thanks again

The thicker the cover the better as you can see.

@@MarkVPeterson Bad advice, Duskies want about 1/3->1/2 tree cover on average, primarily mature trees, with some fairly minimal ground cover (besides berry bushes or grass with bugs). Unlike ruffed grouse that like it thick with young tree stands Duskies are often in fairly 'scabby' terrain in terms of ground cover. Some of the best Dusky covers i've been to had broods in sage mountainsides with small copse of aspens lining creeks. The birds are often in the sage picking hoppers early season. They do tend to be on the edges of tree stands. Also worth noting they live at different elevations and completely different terrains based on time of year and age/sex of bird. Anything from sage steppe up to aspen groves and further up into the conifers (Firs specifically). Most importantly they like a good steep grade. If theres no slope nearby, its not good dusky terrain. Heres a great resource: www.docdroid.net/file/download/s1N7bSv/how-to-hunt-dusky-grouse-2-pdf.pdf

You guys are hunting the dusky grouse if it was a sooty grouse you would have a half inch to inch Blue bar running across the back of the tail. People always get all upset and been out of shape when I say this and not say blue grouse. but that's like calling a white tail a black tail and a mule deer all just a deer. Yes but No.

I saw you shoot the tree on the quick double shot and I saw you run around a tree and take a quick shot into the air on the first shot. I am calling BS on both shots. Maybe a re enactment of shots made off camera or more likely an embellishment of a couple of ground swatted birds to make it look good

With grouse in the west, we shout them in the ground, out of a tree, or in the air.
