In this episode of The Debrief, former 22 SAS Trooper Big Phil Campion speaks to Efrem Brynin.
Born in Sussex, and pursuing his passion for music performing in bands, Efrem welcomed his first child aged 18. Growing up quickly, Efrem began a career in construction and quickly climbed the ladder whilst raising his children. Efrem's son James wanted to join the Parachute Regiment, but moved into the Intelligence Corps, where he would deploy on 2 tours of Afghanistan. On his second tour of Afghanistan, and aged just 22, James was killed in a blue-on-blue incident during a handover operation. Efrem and his family have gone on to fight legal battles and inquests with the British Army and the MOD. Efrem appeared on season 2 of Channel 4's 'SAS Who Dares Wins' programme, where he would go on to deliver a moving mirror room interview and share James' story with millions of viewers. Efrem is the founder of the StrongMen charity, which was created to bring men who have experienced loss & bereavement. StrongMen organises adventurous activities and weekend camps across the country, and has helped hundreds of men since it's inception.

An absolute tragedy. And it doesn't say a lot for the HC and the mod how it was dealt with. Disgusting!!

I’m not knocking the guy because i can’t even imagine how painful it must be to lose a son in war, but I do find the bitterness he’s got and the personal issue with the HC soldier who fired the fatal shot, to be weird. I think blue on blues, as awful and avoidable as they are, are just a fact of war, and when the bullets and bombs are flying they do regrettably happen. His son was sadly one of those few who didn’t die at the hands of the enemy and I wonder if he feels cheated that he can’t remember his son as a war hero, but instead has to know his death was merely an accident. I get the impression he feels robbed of the kudos and legacy that his son would’ve had if he had fallen in battle and needs someone to blame for that, so funnels his anger in the direction of the MOD and specifically the soldier who fired the shot, instead of accepting that circumstance and simple statistics are what led to his sons tragic death. I have endless sympathy for this guy and his family but I don’t think he comes across well here really. He does raise several good points though especially the fact the army stop paying your wage even before your corpse leaves theatre which is quite surprising really.

I respectfully disagree. I didn’t think he came across like that at all. Not once did he say or give the impression he wished his son died a war hero… just that he wished his son was still here.

He came across as forgiving as you can get under the circumstances.Despite the bureaucracy of the establishment. One can’t imagine the pain and trauma this family has gone through with their sons loss. It’s behind them now and they have achieved a great deal with the charity.

Also I lost my dad to suicide 2 years ago - and I'm extremely angry at the pathetic state of the mental health support system and how NHS throws medication at depressives instead of other avenues first. I think that's perfectly justified. It doesn't matter if "simple statistics" led to my dad's death. I'm perfectly aware that a certain percentage of people will take their own lives given the means to be able to do so. But I still think the system completely failed him and us as a family. Same applies for Efrem and his family.

@@cirrus393You have my utmost sympathy and losing your Dad in that way is unimaginable. The strength to deal with it must be enormous and you have my full respect. The only point I’d like to make if you are comparing your own situation to Efrens case - is that Efren blaming the soldier who accidentally fired the shot would be like you blaming the chemist who dispensed your fathers anti depressants. Efren makes a point about comparing his son’s accidental death to ‘any other workplace’ where it would’ve been found to be manslaughter. That is exactly my point, war is unique and military service is just not comparable to any other workplace. I think Efren struggles to accept this distinction. No other employer invites you to take another humans life, or would expect you to lay down your life. The army makes no secret of these expectations and they go with the job. Many will feel that Efren was refusing to bow to the establishment and fighting for his son’s memory honourably, but personally it looks to me like a Father whose grief is so strong and complex, coupled with his limited knowledge of the military which prevents him from understanding what military service and war are about. There are around 450 other parents of killed British soldiers who have suffered an equal loss in that conflict, and who did not immediately seek to blame the organisation which their son or daughter willingly joined and went to war with, in full knowledge of the risks, one of which is friendly fire.
