Phlebodium Aureum ~ Blue Star Fern Rescue and Repot
Grab Your Own Blue Star Fern Here: geni.us/BlueSt...
My magnificent Blue Star Fern has some issues! Recently some of the leaves have been drying up and turning crispy, I noticed that it seemed to be drying out very quickly which is an issue for Blue Star Ferns as they need to remain damp to a degree and do not like to dry out completely. I thought that maybe the pot was rootbound and so decided to remove the pot and see if I could solve the issue, this is what I found..

I have just repoted mine today. I have been misting it with destiled water 2 times a day, it was never dry, i keep it moist but still not soggy. Nevertheless,it has stayed almost the same as bought, a few leaves curl and crink dry, a few new comes out and in a circle like that for months. The same has been happening to my heart-fern. Somewhere I have read that ferns should not be watered from above, but instead to let them *drink* from under , as the water *is destroying* the rizome. I have no info or data to back this up, but I checked both of mine today, the soil and the roots are fine, the pot size is fine. Their positions and lighting is fine, i mist them every day at least 2 times, both keep shooting new leaves but the older ones keep crinkling and drying out. So from today, they have new supstrate, and new pots which I will put in water for them to drink. Also I only use destiled water for my ferns. I am also going to incorporate a pebble tray with water for moisture. I hope I get it right this time :)
@HouseplantHacks
@HouseplantHacks 3 жыл бұрын
I've also heard mention of watering from below due to rhizome damage but I'm not 100% convinced about that, I might do some more research, from what I understand the rhizomes can take up moisture in which case they will need to get some from time to time. I always like to think about what would happen in nature and although they might get some moisture from below when it rains heavily the whole plant would get wet so I don't think the rhizome is going to get damaged by water, not unless it was a lot and kept soggy wet. I think a pebble tray will help quite a bit to keep the humidity levels up so that's a good idea. Let me know how you get on. My one has been much happier since the repot and now the soil doesn't dry out every two days it stays moist and now the leaves aren't going brown. I have mine on a pebble tray also.

Alot of plants benefit from water baths rather than getting leaves and stems wet, not so bad outdoors as the natural air circulation dries them pretty quickly, but indoors unless you have fans on they suffer for it x

I actually find my blue star is much more resistant when not getting watered, as compared to my maiden hair fern for example. Which i've nearly killed twice now haha I rescued the blue star which was half dead and selling for 50 cents at the market. Great find. It's one of my favorites by far. With leaves as big as my monstera

Oh that's brilliant - thanks Andy. My blue star is quarter size of yours and is doing well but I have been wondering how I repot it as it will need repotting later in the Spring. It was bought in a hanging container so the container is shallow. I wasn't quite sure about the rhizomes so you have cleared that up for me and I tend to always put perlite in my repotting soil so it is a good job I have seen this.
@HouseplantHacks
@HouseplantHacks 3 жыл бұрын
You're welcome Melanie, I think Perlite woiuld probably be fine, it was just in this case that the rootball was so compacted at this stage that I wanted to try something different to raise the moisture leavel for this plant.

Great videos and good luck! I have a blue star also! It is gorgeous and massive, with even larger fronds than the one in this video… I believe due mostly to a well-timed repotting and a few other factors which I wanted to note for anyone who might be struggling with theirs: call me crazy, but try more light! When I first brought this baby home it struggled - so I went back to the nursery and asked the owner his opinion and showed him pictures of where I kept it in the house. He said “oh no, that needs much more light“ I was surprised to hear that but I did what he said, and ever since I put it in a West facing window it has thrived! Also due to the fact that it is above my kitchen sink and probably gets a fantastic amount of humidity all day as I use very hot water and there’s a lot of steam with washing dishes, and the like. I wanted to ask though: the fronds on mine are much curlier looking, the edges are much wavier than most of the ones I see on the Internet. Any thoughts there?

Agreed more mottled light, good drainage and don't forget to water. I am lucky enough to get one, I am in Africa. These kinds of exotic ferns are rare. I don't get pumice but I am going to try adding some vermiculite and grit. I like quick drainage.
@HouseplantHacks

That's awesome! Yes I have also found that they prefer more light than your average fern and more water than average too. Not sure about the curly leaves though, maybe just a slightly different cultivar? I wish you continued success!

Thank you so much! I learned a lot from the other video about your Blue Fern, mine is very very sad at the moment... I'll keep it more moist and keep an eye on it, might need to repot it as well. It's in a huge pot but loads of leaves have died off :( So scaling back might be good.

All right, here's a little update on my fern! There are only two leaves left, but they're doing better than before. There was almost no soil left (same as in your video), so I gave it a lot more soil and now I'm spritzing it with water all the time, and watering it more in general. As that hasn't improved it a lot, I'll try to make a humidity tray with little stones like you explained in another video. Let's hope that'll help! 🤞 Thanks again, I'm excited to see your future videos and projects 😄
@HouseplantHacks
@HouseplantHacks 3 жыл бұрын
@@monicascholte3819 Thanks for the update! It sounds like it needed that repot. It can take some time for a plant to come back to full health, especially after a repot so don't worry too much if it has those two healthy leaves it can still photosynthesize and produce energy and then more leaves, keep it well watered and that humidity try will help too, these also like bright indirect light too. I'm sure it will start pushing out new leaves in a week so. Good luck. Andy :-)

just include some topsoil, some mini bark chippings and perlite, mix in with some general purpose compost and see what you think, it doesn't want to stay wet but just take alittle longer to dry out.

They are indeed both eppiphites but in my experience this plant benefits from more water and light, (not direct) and so if the soil is fast draining then it will dry out too quickly. That's what I have found anyway.
