This is a super-condensed unboxing and review of the audio setup I use to record my voice in my videos. If you are a KZfaqr, game commentator, podcaster, have a home-studio for audio recording… this guide is for you with all my love! I hope it helps you to make better recordings with good sound quality and less background noise.
Connecting to iPad and iPhone is also possible - but not as simple as it is to connect the Yeti directly into a Mac or PC's USB. To use the Yeti microphone with an iOS device you need an Apple's USB Camera Adapter (or the 30-pin "Camera Connection Kit") and a powered USB Hub, and you are ready to record sound with Garageband or any other App.

About the Radius Shock Mount:
The old Radius falling problem is fixed! Blue rebranded it as "Radius II". The new model comes with a different thumb-screw mechanism with teeth (cog). Now it stays put just perfect :)
"C-Threep" compared recordings 'with' and 'without' the Radius shock mount, and how much it really isolates the Yeti from vibrations. He also suggests a nice fix for the 'sliding-down' problem on the old model. Check out his very nice review of the original Radius:

Hi MrMEOLA, I suppose you came here looking to improve your sound - we are always pursuing that, aren't we! :) I watched a couple of your videos: I noticed your walls are very naked in a small room - they create a lot of reverberation (is kind of noticeable in the recordings). My suggestion is: if there is a wall in front of you (behind your monitor, computer, etc) place some really thick studio foam panels (go for 10cm or even thicker) - Two or 3 panels centered directly in front of you would absorb a lot. At your back wall you could also use studio foam but you will probably want to have aesthetics in mind (since that wall will apear on videos) and the panels don't need to be that thick (5 or 6 cm is ok) there are plenty of colors and shape patterns for you to choose - even white ones. You don't need to fill the whole wall - I guess 6 panels would cover the visible area behind you). Panels in the center of the wall are very effective (for mid and hight frequency). Here in Madrid it would cost around € 200 - I don't think it would be that different in Australia. Anyway, you already have a Yeti Pro, time to move to the room, ha ha ha. You will be surprised with the result. Good luck and keep doing what you love!
@MrMEOLA
@MrMEOLA 9 жыл бұрын
You have an iPad Hey! Wasn't expecting such a helpful reply! Thanks a lot for taking the time! I actually have some foam behind my monitors, you should have heard the reverb before that! Haha. It was just some of the cheap stuff of ebay (i dont think its as good a quality) But yea, hasnt removed it all! Defintiely need some more soft surfaces in here. Will consider getting some more on the wall behind me!

No problem MrMEOLA! Sound is a bitch, ha ha ha, it doesn't matter how much you did, it seems like there is still so much missing! (or in excess...). It leads to obsession (be careful!). ha ha ha. Hey, when you change something, I would love if you remember to ping me so I can listen (always learning). Thanks!

Thank you! And yes! I am now using the Yeti hanging downwards, and the upgrade in audio quality is phenomenal! Plus now I have so much additional space on my desk!
@GeekDetour
@GeekDetour 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the additional space is precious :) In most of my videos I do Voice-Overs, so I can read my texts with my mouth almost "eating" the microphone... very different of talking to the camera (like you do), trying to position the microphone as close as possible without having it cluttering the frame, ha ha ha. Maybe, for you, a shotgun mic could be the best setting - but that is the bad thing about gear: it can lead to an endless obcession pursuing 2% better audio, ha ha ha, while the cost skyrocket. The Yeti is an awesome/simple solution with great quality. Unfortunately, I've been already bitten by the "higher-gear-pursuing" mosquito... I am always considering buying something better, ha ha ha.

Haha, absolutely! I find myself getting the "itch" to continuously upgrade even for the smallest upgrade in quality. :)

About background noise: on a regular house, there is a lot of noises... and, yes, Yeti will pick them too. The advice is: reduce the Gain to around 30% or less and speak close to the microphone. Cardioid is the best pattern for voice recording - it is what you hear during the whole video :)
@GeekDetour
@GeekDetour 8 жыл бұрын
Hi +Roger Murtaugh! The Radius 2 replaced the original Radius. The first Radius had a problem with the thumb-screw, very difficult to tight it enough... with the Yeti's weight, it was constantly sliding down... People used to put so much force trying to make it steady, in many occasions the Thumb screw simply snapped!!! The Radius II fixed this problem: the hinge now works and stays put perfectly without applying much force. If you find the old Radius for sale, don't buy it. The Radius 2 is the real deal :)

Oh, yes, there are some very functional tricks to make the old Radius stand still. Replacing the plastic washers of the Radius by the rubber rings that come with the Yeti's base is one of them :) The thing is: when I ordered my Radius from a local store, they already sent me the new model (Radius II) right away. You can improve your existing original Radius, but for new buyers, I really recommend buying the new model.
@GeekDetour
@GeekDetour 8 жыл бұрын
***** A few months ago, on Amazon it was still possible to find the old Radius - but I wasn't with discount, no advantage at all. On the description I put links only to the new Radius II, of course - it is what I have and I can recommend.

The Internet - and more specifically now KZfaq - never stops surprising me... you have a CAD focused channel!?! So, Wow - thats something to respect! On many occasions I used (well, tried to) different 3D software, it is always a lot to dig in and digest. I kind of achieved what I wanted... but it always took me a lot of time! You need to use it on a daily basis to really become comfortable and productive.
@Neil3D
@Neil3D 8 жыл бұрын
+You have an iPad Yes very true, I have used 3D CAD daily for... about 15 years now :) I previously worked for a CAD supplier and also briefly Autodesk, CAD is my day job too and I do the KZfaq thing in my free time. It's very difficult to get an audience on KZfaq though as CAD isn't exciting, it's a small audience (unlike gaming and people wanting to watch music and videos of cats dancing) so it sometimes feels like there's a lot of hard work and not many people watching! But it's growing :)
@GeekDetour
@GeekDetour 8 жыл бұрын
+TFI CAD Tips it is totally true - but I think I couldn't keep a channel posting myself smashing eggs and throwing stuff (do you know 'How to Basics'?) although it seems like stress relief (if someone ELSE cleans it after). Anyway, I think there is a nice sweet spot on any niche. A lot of young teens comment/post questions on this very video about the Yeti - they want to improve their channels, very often about Gaming (and many are Minecraft) - it looks to me a very crowded space, super hard to be noticed.

+You have an iPad It does take a lot of motivation to keep going, when you see someone like PewDiePie upload a video of himself just on a rollercoaster and that gets 3 million views, and then I put 15 years of experience into an educational video and lucky to get a few thousand views! You need to REALLY want to do this to keep going! But it's all good, it shows that we don't do it for any money :)

I have to say you answer every question i had about not only upgrading from a SnowBall but also a shock mounts and a arm that would hold it all. thank you for this vid.
@GeekDetour
@GeekDetour 8 жыл бұрын
Hey +Bloodgold, thank you! The SnowBall is a great microphone if you consider its price - but every product has its limitations. The Blue Yeti is by far a more versatile and capable microphone (a bit large, I would say). I am truly happy with the setup I show in this video. Maybe, in the future, I will replace my Yeti for the Yeti PRO... because I want to use it with an analog tube pre-amp with equalization, auto-compression... things I do manually today after recording, but they could be done by a pre-amp or mixing table directly while I am recording :)... But all of that is a bunch of more money, and the result will not necessarily be that noticeable than what I already achieve with the normal Yeti and software.

Absolutely perfect video. Explained EVERYTHING I wanted to know. This was my first time getting a mic seperate from a headset since.... 1994 maybe? when I had a terrible skinny mic on a stand on its own. Good times... Anyway, as I said, PERFECT video, explaining the hanging upside down part as well just like noobies like me wanted to know, explaining the products, where to get them from, featuring the links in the description that are even seperated from the fact you were talking about iOS and not confusing me by putting them into different categories and even a bit of cheeky comedy. Well done, good sir. Normally, an accent would deter me a little bit as I would have to watch a video back a little more to understand how you would pronounce English words but your accent was great, still understood your English perfectly despite being (I assume, correct me if I am wrong) from a non native english speaking country. All around, perfect video! 5 Stars! Oh wait... that's the old... youtube... system... mumble grumble... Thumbs up! (No offense intended in this comment. Hey I just want to say a huge well done on the making of this video. Very well made.. quick, clear and professional. I also want to thank you for the tips, I have had the Blue Yeti along with a generic pop filter for quite some time now and was doing research to find the best Arm and Shock mount for the Yeti and these were the items I had in mind and your video just made me 100% sure these are the correct things to buy to get the ultimate audio with the Blue Yeti. Thanks again and well done on such a great video.

Hey +RedzyZS, thank you, I appreciate it! Before buying the Rode PSA1 and the Radius, I used the Yeti (with a Pop Filter) for two years and I tried a lot of improvised stuff when recording. A lot crazy amateur stuff actually work (ex: opening the wardrobe's doors behind me Reduce echo/reverberation of the room quite a lot, because of the clothes). I used some folded towels under the Yeti's base to reduce vibration picking - it also helps... but after some time you get tired of improvising and you want something that looks great, that is practical, functional, always ready to rock. Then I bough the Rode arm and the Radius and I was much happier :) I am sure they will help you too. BUT, be patient and persistent: good audio recording/equalization/mixing/editing needs mastery and it takes time. Good luck!

Hi! Try it carefully... sometimes it seems you started screwing ok, but if it is a bit misaligned it stops after one or two spins... You remove it and try again and it goes all the way. Very important you don't apply force if it is not going.

C-Threep Do you still have the Yeti as your main microphone, directly in the computer? I am finding Audacity / recording, then applying EQ / Normalize / Compression, etc... a bit tiresome. A small mixing-table with the eq-knobs and built-in compressor might help me having a more 'final' audio instantly... Or maybe I am just using the wrong software... Any thoughts?
@cThreep
@cThreep 9 жыл бұрын
You have an iPad Yeah it's always a struggle trying to figure out how to QUICKLY make videos you're proud of. I'd love to upload one video per week, but it's tough! And I'm still just using my Yeti for voiceovers. A mixing board would be nice, but you can also just set up a few presets on Audacity to have it EQ'd to fit your voice (I think the compressor and normalizer both have the ability to set presets as well). So as long as you record your voiceover with the same mic in the same spot everytime, those presets should be spot on.

Hey Master Miner thank you! I never tried the rode podcaster myself (I only watched reviews/tests) - but the Yeti seemed to have a greater fidelity. Some people prefer the podcaster arguing it captures less 'background noise'... The Yeti indeed captures much more of 'everything' - so, talking really close to the microphone and lowering the gain is really important! Good luck! :)

Hey, thank YOU! My pleasure! Yes, there are a BUNCH of cheap arms now - I never see anyone making one year/two year usage reviews of them... I am still using my Rode PSA1 arm (almost 4 years now!) and it is rock solid. Blue just launched an arm of their own, but it is too soon to know if it is really durable or not. Good luck on your quest for a cheap and good arm! :)

My pleasure Gnomedic. The Radius is not essential in the sense it doesn't make the sound better per se... You could place some folded towels under the Yeti's base and it prevent's most of the vibration picking - or use the Yeti over a pillow... you wouldn't believe all the crazy things I tried while I was saving money for the Rode PSA1 and the Radius! ha ha. In the process I learned a lot, I like to believe :)

Thank you, ha ha! But there are tricks: in all videos I am actually reading the text I wrote previously - and I do lots of repetitions to correct my mistakes - I never do LIVE videos 😆

Nice video. Very informative and to the point. Probably getting the Radius and boom stand for my Yeti setup as well

Thank you Gamerbielz. I am pretty sure you will have lots of fun with that setup. But remember: the most noticeable elements to good sound are: - the Pop-filter - speaking close to the microphone - low gain (increasing gain you amplify everything including room noises) - turning off noises (air-conditioning) - post processing (equalization / normalization / compression). The boom arm and the shock mount help a lot on placing the mic on the right spot and avoiding picking vibrations, but I would say these are "comfort" / "final details" gear.

I do Gaming videos and such with a Blue Yeti mic for commentary. But I am using the original stand that came with the mic. Making my experience very hard. I have been looking all over the Internet for a stand and shock mount only to find ones that are incompatible with the Yeti. Then I stumbled across this video. This video literally has solved my problems. Very detailed and well executed. Thanks so much! Definitely will be using these materials for my setup! :)

My pleasure Mr. Sam! :) Yeah, I am still super happy with my Yeti and the setup you see in this video (I am still using this very gear, exactly). The Rode PSA1 is kind of expensive - but it is really a solid piece! I still recommend.

This, by far, is the best tutorial on the Blue Yeti, and the Rode mic stand, and VERY valuable info about the shock mount. I had heard it breaks easily ( the knob ) and had no clue it had been fixed ( updated ) . You should have 10,000 likes on this video. Super professional, and the video overall - a huge thumbs up !

FrostyTheBeerMan I saw you published a series of videos about Log Splitters - impressive! I didn't know the existence of such things. Is it something popular where you live? (while watching yours, KZfaq suggested another video showing a 'gas' motorized splitter - crazy fast! it cold make an accident with people not paying attention on proper usage!).

Just getting started on YT and this video made the mic portion so easy. I already had the mic but I was struggling to find the right peripherals, and you flipping nailed it. Thanks so much!

+You have an iPad Is there a way to use two mics, like for myself and my cohost? Or would I be better served using the bi-directional setting on the Yeti?

Hi Zodie & Matjy - it depends on the software you are using. Some allow you to setup multiple microphones. Some don't. For example: Audacity only record 1 "microphone"... but on the Mac you can trick it by creating an "Aggregate Device": support.apple.com/en-us/HT202000
