A big takeaway from our previous hunt was always check those holes you think they’d never be in because it’s probably not getting hunted as much. After 5-6 hours, 4 trucks, 3 boats out scouting to find that one gold mine, Simms found a wad of them tucked back in a small timber hole. Like we always say “sometimes you have to go places no one else wants to go”. Ended up having two great back to back hunts, there was a good amount of water, and the hole was stacked full of ducks. Everyone headed back home after the second hunt but Simms and Jake weren’t done yet. There was a second arctic blast headed in, Simms and Jacob scouted around all they could but didn’t find a whole lot of action. The skinny water during the day was open and there were some ducks, that was the plan to hunt but when we got out there the next morning we didn’t feel like busting ice all through the timber and thick brush so we decided to change it up a bit and hunt this beautiful spot we saw the week prior but the only issue was we never saw ducks in it. We figured we could pull some in because it was in such a good location and set up for the south winds, so we gave it a shot! Heading into the hunt Mote was very confident this cold front was going to push more ducks down south, they didn’t really have a choice with how cold it was up north and how much it was snowing. Usually it is not advised to break it up in the woods because the ducks know it’s icy, but at least it’s bluebird with a nice south wind. Coming off the two hour scout yesterday we didn’t see a whole lot but with this weather we had a feeling something good was going to happen. As soon as it was shooting time, 10 seconds in… we saw a group of ducks and one hit on the call they all came in on a line - it was truly beautiful. The boys were celebrating how perfectly they were able to work that first volley and Simms ended up tripping over a log, if Mote wasn’t standing right there he would have ended up face first in the ice cold water. We think the ducks came over to the hole we were at because the spots we looked at yesterday were all locked up, none of it was open, so we assumed the big open hole in the corner would catch their attention with the help of the mojo motion and calling. This hunt was exactly what duck hunting is supposed to be about, everything ended up aligning perfectly, Jacob was shaking it was the first day he could hunt all season, huge smile on his face. It’s fun shooting a lot, but it's really not about how many you kill it’s about how you kill them. When you are able to work them in a hole and they angel wing down, there isn’t any better feeling, only duck hunters understand. We ended up shooting a three man, dropped 4 or 5 in that first volley, bluebird and green heads, can’t get any better than that! Catch us on the next one, big collab incoming!
