So a little disclaimer here- I misnamed a few notes in the first A7 blues chord. Its.. C# (1st finger 4th fret A string), G (Ring finger 5th fret D string), B (Middle finger 4th fret G string), E (Little finger 5th fret B string). Sorry for the confusion if any! Thanks friends!!

Richard Goodman dumb question..,but without an A in the chord, what makes it an A9? I thought the chords had to have a root in them
@guthrietrappmusic
@guthrietrappmusic 5 жыл бұрын
It’s implied. If the bass player is playing an A it works as an A 9. It can also be a half diminished chord with a different bass note.

So glad you clarified the notes and the implied character of the first ‘A’ chord, i have been foxed for days trying to work out why it was an ‘A’. Had to rely on the fact that whatever it was it sounds good!

Phrasing has always been difficult for me to lock down. I'm not even sure if I'm spelling it right. But the way you described working on four notes, the way your uncle showed you, and how to bend to notes that matter, those are guitar instruction gems. Lights came on like Yankee Stadium as to how I need to practice! This is how to get the sounds in my head under my fingertips. It'll have to be after the first of the month but I'll find your paypal and send twenty bones too. Thanks Guthrie, your videos are packed with gems just like those.

I contect to your style and thinking. You put a lesson out there and when I watch them over&over (rewind&playback) you give me tons of material underneath the lesson you are teaching. I have purchased your recordings, artistworks lesson and plan to be in Nashville in Oct19 and will hit you up next month for a live lesson. I have made so much progress but I don't have a friend/uncle or others to play with (do to my lifestyle) and give encouragement/direction so learning on-line is my path the knowledge. Thoughts and prayers to you, brother....Keep on pushing it!

Hey GT! My takeaway here was that chromatic walk up. Very nice! This is a very good fundamental blues lesson, this is where you start right here. One thing not to overlook, GT's phrasing is top notch. He was demonstrating the very basics of this, and still his phrasing, bending, rhythm, choice of notes spot on. GT I've been playing a long time and I can always pull some nuggets out of these. Thanks!

@@guthrietrappmusic GT totally agree. lol, I started in the late 70's and everything was blues based. Lot of different styles of guitar playing currently, I like most of them as a player and listener, but still comes down to phrasing, bending, rhythm, choice of notes, and playing over the changes. Keep doing what you doing, the guitar community needs and appreciates this.

Guthrie, there are so many fabulous aspects to your playing, but it all starts with great tone, and you have inspired me to always strive for that. It's all about the listener, the audience, and fundamentally, that's what really hooks them in. And then, what keeps them there is melodic playing and that "groove" you have emphasized.

Alfred Dowaliby Right!! Thanks man!! The reason why the old blues guys being a little out of tune and rough around the edges, is because it had so much feel, tone, soul and tone. That overpowered the other elements that may have been a little less than perfect.

That was fantastic. You nailed it on all of the important musical points. That bit about ‘bending the wrong note’ is so true. I think many of us go thru a phase of nailing the pentatonic minor, but do the wrong thing when things slip into more of a need for major pentatonic - maybe.

great tutorial GT! Something I like to see in future. With this lesson you went from basic blues rhythm to phrasing. All cool and very helpful. I'd like to back up and stay with some basic blues rhythms....and inch into some 3 note arpeggios phrasing while STILL maintaining the rhythm licks/feel. That way I can see/hear where you're going on the neck as the blues travels along in it's familiar progression. This would be a sort of baby stepping into lead phrasing but keeping the rhythm back bone going strong. Hope that makes sense. Thanks again for your great tutorials!

The chord in question at the 9 minute mark is a C#m7b5 but it’s an implied A dominant 9 because it has all the notes except for the A which the bass player likely has anyway. 3rd, b7, 5 and 9. C#, G, E, B respectively.

Hey Guthrie, it just goes to show you just because you may not know all the theory like what chords are named what but the key is you surely know what the hell to do with them! Great job as always 8:25 it’s a C# half diminished, or a E minor 6. Of course I had to be an ass and name the chord. The only reason I’m crammed with theory is from school but boy what id give to have perfect pitch. Haha can only dream.

This is a great lesson. Thanks for breaking it down from the basic shuffle, to adding a walk up, to landing it with chords. Could you do some lessons on the timing of the blues and how these three aspects fit into the timing?

Guthrie, I think you are the best! I would love to take a trip to Nashville and take a lesson in person, I live in San Francisco. I'm a little weary of a in person lesson over the computer, but maybe I shouldn't be. Man, thanks for these lessons, your playing and your style is really inspirational, I look forward to contacting you soon.
