Polymer Clay Pen/Crochet Hooks Tutorial

Tutorial on how to make marbled polymer clay that can be used to make pens or crochet hooks.
*Correction: The cubes of clay that I cut are 1/2 inches on each side. The little squares in the grid are 1/8 in and 4 of those would make the 1/2 in.

A knitting needle is a very good tool to blend the clay join together and remove the join completely!

This is awesome, I was wondering how will make pens, but crochet hook must be lower so you don't cover the mm measurement size

Kristi-Anne Spoljaric you can definitely put it lower so that you don't cover the size. What I do know is add some black clay in the shape of the size number or letter so that I know the size later.

I know this is an older video but I noticed in the background how you store your clay. Can u explain this more? Did it continue to work for you? Thx

Kathy Smith yes, I still use this storage solution. The downside is that, if you don’t use them for months, then they dry out a little and you have to work with them to get them soft again. However, I think that happens with a lot of storage options for clay. I do like how neat and portable it is.

how would you do it if you don't a pasta machine?

You can roll it out yourself with a rolling pin or something round. You could also flatten the clay as much as possible and then roll the pen after you put the clay on it. The second option is harder to do with a crochet hook. The last option I would say is to cut thin pieces and put them onto the pen separately (instead of making a sheet of clay) and then roll the pen until it is smooth.

If you have a rolling pin, you can put two things to the left and right of the clay and then roll over the clay with the rolling pin on those two objects. This will create an even layer. For example I’m thinking two chopsticks would be a good thickness or you might have two think books. Otherwise just flattening the clay with your hands or something like a rolling pin can work just fine.

Yeah I wouldn't recommend using it for anything other than clay. :)

Roxana Arias Moreno Roxana Arias Moreno If I only do one batch, it doesn’t melt. If I try to put in a second batch after the first one is done, then it has melted on me. So I stick to 20 mins preheating and then about 9 mins for backing one batch of pens. The temperature I use is 275 degrees.

Very nice, but you should leave the crochet hook numbers free of clay so that the user will know what size hook it is. Now I know how to cover my hooks! Thanks for sharing.

Daniella Uribe I’m glad you enjoyed the video. I either paint the size onto the clay after I bake it or add some black clay in the shape of the size beforehand.
